The Edgewater Hotel boasts a picturesque location on Lake Mendota that receives consistent praise for its scenic views and proximity to attractions. Guests are enamored with the hotel's historic charm and the cleanliness of the rooms, which are often lauded for their comfort. However, opinions on service and value are divided; while some commend the helpful staff, others experience professionalism lapses and question the overall value, feeling the luxury doesn't justify the cost. Amenities, too, fall short of expectations for some, despite the hotel's high-quality dining options.

We had a wonderful stay with great service and attention to detail. The reservation staff went above an beyond to make sure our needs were met. We loved the lake view and beautiful hotel amenities. I wish we would have known more about the available spa services earlier, so we could have taken advantage of them.

We have driven by Madison many times on our way from Chicago to the Twin Cities, and thought it was time we visited. We stayed at the Edgewater for two nights and explored some of the many restaurants and museums the capitol has to offer. Winter rates were reasonable and the staff was courteous and welcoming. Even at the "Winter Sale" rate, we had a lovely water view and a spacious comfortable room with a large, walk-in shower (no bath).

When I first checked into this hotel I was a little disappointed with my room, after expressing my issues with a reservation sales specialist named Myron Petties I was completely satisfied. He made sure that everything we asked for was taken care of and immediately put up in a different room that was in my opinion 10 times better for the price I paid. Myron definitely set the tone for the rest of our trip and I am so happy God blessed us with such an amazing person who really cared about what we wanted! Because of him we will definitely reconsider staying again, and book through him!
Thanks again Mr. Pretties for making our stay great!

My husband and I booked a last minute trip to Madison for one night. We are new to Wisconsin and had never been to Madison. We thought heard good things about edge water so we thought it would be perfect for a one night get away. We booked a Premium lakefront King. The Hotel was beautiful and the room was large, clean and very nice!! the View was amazing even in January. The package we booked came with a free bottle of wine (they e-mail you asking if you would like red or white before you arrive & Also verify white or red at check in) and free parking. At check in he went over everything and was great. He said the bottle of wine would be in the room shortly after 4 when that crew came in. We went for a walk after checking into out room and arrived back at the room around 6:30pm. No wine had been delivered, so i called to check on it. I spoke to someone who was not very nice and said they didnt know about the wine but said "fine what color red or white?". The wine arrived warm. We took advantage of the option to order dinner to the room. We ordered a Steak, Salad and soup. The food arrived to our door (safe and fast). We were given the cheapest plastic silverware that comes in a package and the only napkins were the one that came in the silverware packet. We had to saw away at our steak with this silverware. This kind of ruined the entire experience. We also had to use the one-ply tissues in the room for napkins. I understand Covid protocols but either don't have steak on your room service menu or warn us before spending $30 on a steak. The restaurant downstairs is open so are you giving those people plastic silverware? why cant you wash the silverware from room service the same way you wash the restaurant silverware? For the price of the room I felt like a motel 8 dining experience. As i saw in previous reviews I also noticed the toilet paper and tissues being 1 ply. This was very disappointing for such a nice hotel. Front desk staff were great. We also went ice skating and that was great!

Be careful- if you book based on pictures you will be disappointed. We paid extra for what we thought would be a tub in the room and later the fine print says shower only (despite the room picture showing a tub). They give you two 4 oz of water “free” daily (one per person), but if you miss housekeeping then they do not restock it. Honestly everything cost extra. The room on the inside is just a nice as a Hilton or Hampton Inn, but double the cost - and without any of the nice extras.

This is the finest hotel in Madison with breathtaking views from every room. We checked in Mid July and decided to stay through October while our home was being renovated from storm damage. The service was top notch. The food in the restaurants was gourmet. The views on the lake were breathtaking and no expense was spared on the rooms. Large soaking tub in the bathroom with separate shower and two sinks. Large cushy bathrobes and slippers. Down comforter. Blackout shades for sleeping. Every detail well planned. This is the only place we will stay in Madison. We went to the spa and had massages. It was a wonderful vacation. They take great care to keep the entire place sanitized for covid with hand sanitizer at every elevator bank and the gym is setup for social distanced workouts. Everyone wears masks indoors. We felt safe the whole time. If you need a romantic break during covid and find yourself in Madison Wisconsin, please do yourself a favor and spend a few days here. There is so much to do near Madison. We loved the farmers markets and little towns nearby, nature walks and national parks.

Stunning location, beautiful hotel unfortunately lacking in elegance with regards to the front of house staff.

July 2023

Set in a stunning location on the edge of Lake Mendota, The Edgewater Hotel has many beautiful features; The stunning spa, Lakeview rooms with large comfortable beds and luxurious bedding. The Boathouse and Statehouse restaurants connected to the hotel are an excellent combination of casual lakeside dining with a fabulous menu and elegant, high end fine dining. The Boathouse staff were young and casual and very friendly which suited the casual lakeside environment.
Unfortunately we felt that despite the luxurious surroundings, the lack of elegance and professionalism from the front of house staff really let the hotel down. It did not feel like a high end hotel, and at $1000 for 2 nights we expected excellent service and a little bit of luxury in the room above the basic requirements, but we were very disappointed. There were no teabags or milk in the room as stated, no mini bar or any extras in the room at all other than a very small bottle of water each in the fridge. We arrived in the evening, so asked the reception staff if they could provide some tea bags. He wasn’t very helpful and just sent us upstairs to The Statehouse restaurant to ask if they had any. We also asked the staff at the statehouse if they had a biscuit or a chocolate to accompany our tea. They gave us 2 teabags and a paper cup with a very small amount of milk and 4 small chocolates. We were charged on our bill $10 for the 2 teabags and $15 for the 4 chocolates! We were appalled at the price and at the lack of helpful service. We had just spent a few days in the Four Seasons in Chicago, which cost less per night than the Edgewater yet the elegance and helpfulness of the staff far surpassed the service we received at the Edgewater. It’s a shame as the hotel itself is really beautiful.

This "4 star" hotel is anything but. I will give them that the hotel is nicely decorated, the bathrooms are large and depending on where your room is a view of the lake is nice but that is where the 4 stars end. They charge you a separate resort fee on top of your room charge but I have no idea why they do this. It is a hotel with no resort amenities that I could see. Yes they have a very small pool, very small gym and a spa that was in another building but that was it, most downtown hotels have those things. There was no game room, not boats or access to the lake to swim, no 24 hr room service. I was expecting some luxury in this hotel but found none. The bed is hard, the pillows are flat, they have NO vending machines in the entire hotel, mini fridge is not cold, coffee I used in my room was not replaced when I used it so I had to ask for more, no microwave, restaurants are limited hours and small menu. It is not located anywhere near a grocery store or gas station so you could walk to get something to eat. Bathroom has toilet in separate room which is nice if you are staying with someone but there is no garbage can in there so you literally have to hold onto garbage or put it on the floor until your done and can put it in the can in the main area. The usual shampoo, soap etc was low quality and no extras that you would normally find at a 4 star hotel. Basically it was not worth the $250 a night.

We live locally. I called rather than booking online which was much cheaper. I sprung for the much more expensive room because it was our wedding night, which I communicated to the reservations specialist, so I trusted that the room rate was commensurate with a special room for a special occasion. Not only was this not noted in our reservation, but it was also not acknowledged in any way in our check in or in the room. To be fair they offered us a free stay, but that was not really a satisfactory option since we live in Madison and since we were feeling sour grapes about it. It was a realy let down. (The Statehouse dinner was the high light. They got most things right.)

Really disappointed. I am not a complainer, but feel compelled to share as it was ludicrous how far away from my expectations this place was. I have stayed in many Madison hotels, all much better.!!
Room was ridiculously small, literally, I have never stayed in a room this small in hundreds of hotel rooms in my lifetime. The bed was supposed to be a King, but was certainly smaller than a standard King. The relaxation pool was cold, the wifi was public/unsecured and yet we were charged an 18% "resort fee". Seriously, I am just still scratching my head trying to figure it out. It was clean and the staff was friendly, but I don't think I have ever been so disappointed in the quality of a hotel as compared to what was marketed to me before arrival. I feel duped and scammed.

Patti J asked a question Mar 2018
How much is parking
Answer from juliakevans

This seems to have conflicting answers. I was charged $18 to park my car one night. Had I known, I would have simply parked on the street (lots of free parking) Definitely ask up front to ensure you know what you’re getting into. And as I side note, I found the underground parking garage very confusing and odd. 🤷‍♀️

Good Morning JWinChica, Thank you for your wonderful question. The Lakeview King Rooms offer a view of the lake, however a Lakeshore room is a lower-level room closer to the shore and has a full, lake-facing view with floor to ceiling windows. The Lakeshore room view is similar to one you might have on a cruise ship. Please let us know if you have any other questions. All Our Best, Amy Supple, COO The Edgewater Team

Where is parking? Is parking free? What do I need to book, specifically, for a water view? Thanks!
Answer from asupinmadison
Madison, Wisconsin
Dear Chelsea T, Thank you for your question regarding your future visit to The Edgewater. Our overnight parking garage is located on-site and it is $18 for self-parking or $25 for valet. As we have multiple room types that offer a lake view, I highly recommend calling our reservations team at 608-535-8200 so they may describe the lake views and the benefits of each room,. One of my favorite rooms is the Premium Lakefront, which offers an expansive view of the lake. We look forward to welcoming you to The Edgewater on beautiful Lake Mendota!
