Set in the Nuwara Eliya valley of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Ferncliff is an ancestral bungalow restored to echo the nostalgia of “Little England”. With four rooms and two suites, Ferncliff serves as an opulent tribute to design, layout and the comfort of bungalow living. In close vicinity to tea, nature, mountainous trails, and to one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia, Ferncliff is a one of a kind vacation bungalow, immersed with the charm and authenticity of the Sri Lankan way of life. Come stay awhile and enjoy hospitality from the soul of Nuwara Eliya. Kindly note that, accommodation for drivers and guides are not available in the premises.
This property is an amazing example of original colonial living: beautifully preserved fireplaces, wooden floors and ceilings - the ambience is incredible. It feels a little like being part of a museum, but there is a massive emphasis on comfort and service. The lawned garden is wonderfully large, English-style and very tranquil. Our room was big, with a beautiful modern bathroom, and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. We were looked after on a lavish scale; log fires and hot water bottles are offered, as it gets chilly at night. Excellent food too. Thank you, Ferncliff!
What a breathtakingly fabulous place. Our 2nd time here, this time with our 2 year old kid. Warm and welcoming colonial style boutique resort in the cool climes of Nuwaraeliya. This is a haven away from the bustling crowds in the Nuwaraeliya Town, placed with a spectacular view of Sri Lanka's highest mountain - Pidurutalagala. The Interior of the bungalow reflects its old world heritage, and to sip of hot cup of tea in the lounge in front of the fireplace is pure bliss. The bedrooms are cosy and comfortable, with all modern bathroom amenities including hot water bath and shower.
The sprawling garden is amazing, with a variety of birds including migrant birds. Wonderful little walking trails with garden benches for times of relaxation, rejuvenation and reflection.A beautifully maintained and enormous lawn with a romantic summer hut ( Ideal to enjoy the house hot chocolate with marshmallows) with mount Pidurutalagala in the backdrop, is a surreal experience.
The food is amazing, with a massive English breakfast . We also chose to have string hoppers for dinner, and the black pork curry was out of this world.
Good measures for covid compliance in place, we felt secure considering the current situation. The place also has lots of privacy.
A big word of appreciation to the staff led by the ever obliging Bernard. All staff were extremely friendly , helpful and courteous.
This was a truly splendid experience.
Ferncliff is a charming and idyllic slice of Nuwara Eliya where time slows down (and even takes you back) allowing you to delight in all the property has to offer – from the gorgeous gardens to the fantastic food and service with a smile.
The 6 bedroom ancestral bungalow has retained its colonial heritage with attention to detail on creating a sense of nostalgia from fireplaces that are lit in the night while dining to hot water bottles placed in the beds to keep you warm as you get your night’s sleep. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with modern bathrooms, and the living room and verandah areas provide spaces to relax and unwind. Despite being a circa 10-minute walk from the town center, Ferncliff’s spacious setting makes it feel you are miles away on your own hill.
We had dinner and breakfast at the accommodation and the food is beautifully presented, the portions are hearty, the taste is scrumptious and generally infused with herbs freshly picked minutes before from the garden. The scones are arguably the best this side of the Lake District and the high tea in the garden is a delicious way to enjoy a sunset in the hill country.
The staff are attentive, friendly, courteous and extremely helpful, where no request is seen as a chore. Bernard was on hand to ensure that we had a pleasant stay and address any queries, while Chef Dinesh is passionate about the food he prepares.
The expansive manicured gardens are teeming with flora covering the colour spectrum and trees provide a sense of tranquility as you indulge in a spot of cloud watching or a cup of tea. It is ideal for kids too with a beautifully crafted walkway around the property taking one through vegetable patches and past lush plants while the large front garden has enough space to play a spot of family cricket!
Thanks for making it a memorable trip and hope to be back soon!

My partner and I stayed at Ferncliff for three nights in Feb 2022. It was a wonderful stay at a beautiful and very atmospheric hotel with superb customer service. Bernard was incredibly welcoming and helpful. We really appreciated his help with organising various trips (eg transport to Horton Plains) and very thoughtful touches such as hot water bottles, a fire in the evenings and packed breakfast for our Horton Plains trip. He insisted on getting up at 5am to make the latter freshly for us along with coffee before we set off. The food was delicious, we particularly enjoyed the Hill Country speciality black pork curry, but everything was wonderful. There are delicious British food options as well as Sri Lankan.

We enjoyed four days at Ferncliff Bungalow and the resident manager, chef, and all the staff were incredibly professional, informative, and extremely attentive. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous with blooming trees, flowers, and gardens. The manager even provided us with a small rosemary plant to bring home (we live in Colombo) when we expressed how hard it was to find rosemary in the city. The room was very large, extremely comfortable, and we LOVED the hot water bottles brought to us in the evening. Also very much enjoyed the wood-burning fireplace in the dining hall. We will definitely be visiting again.

We were really impressed with the excellent service offered by Bernard the resident Manager at Ferncliff Bungalow. We were given everything in terms of food and service . The bungalow had a very relaxing atmosphere with lovely surroundings . Lunch had a lovely spread with a great variety of dishes that tasted great. For dinner I was amazed by the authentic lamprais which tasted fabulous , not forgetting the black pork curry and Beef curry . Kids loved the pork pizza and the chicken pizza . The home made ice cream range was also great, specially the strawberry ice cream was a highlight. We requested for tea at 6.30am and it was delivered to all 3 rooms exactly onntime by Bernard who is the driving force at the bungalow who ensures that everyone gets a quality service. We…

Ferncliffe is the perfect place to stay in Nuwara Eliya. Bernard the manager is so welcoming (as are all the staff) and the bungalow is so cosy, well decorated and homely. It was actually a blessing that it was raining and cold as we had a fantastic hot chocolate paired with roaring fires and hot water bottles (exactly how ‘little England’ should be). For dinner you have to try the lampraise - delicious. Thanks again to all

The bungalow is located one kilometer away from the town of Nuwara-eliya. Surrounded by a peaceful and greenery environment. It is an excellent location to do sightseeing or walking around the city from. I found and highlight the bookshelf which contains a wide variety of books, magazines, and novels was amazing Especially best-selling books and classics from the 1970s and 1980s did not take my eyes away. One can play croquet, board games such as Monopoly, Chess, and jigsaw puzzles during the leisure time which kept myself entertained when it was pouring. The rooms are very spacious and comfy. The 6 rooms are named with their ancestors' names such as Isabelle, Frederick, Louise, Amilia, Suzanne and Geraldine. The staff is very friendly, helpful and well-informed about the…

Luxury and comfort with old world colonial charm. Fabulous place inside and out. Sprawling garden lush with greenery, exotic plants and a variety of birds. Massive well manicured lawn complete with summer hut. A mini walking trail within the gardens. Wonderfully cosy inside. Sitting by the warm fireplace sipping a hot cup of tea, one experiences the heritage and traditions of the bungalow, which belongs to a family of Ceylonese of European descent. Amazing food with a hearty breakfast, served by Chef Dinesh. Very friendly staff with Chef Dinesh and staffer Roshan ever obliging. This outstanding customer service has created a very family friendly atmosphere. Good covid compliance measures in place, with staff always wearing masks when dealing with guests. Overall…
