I left several other very positive reviews about accommodation during our 3 weeks Lembongan-Bali-Lombok trip, but this is from far the one we enjoyed the most. We enjoyed what we reckon was close to luxury, at the price of an Irish or UK private Bed and Breakfast room, where you'd pay 35 EUR/person sharing.
What was it that made us feel so well here? A few words. Please read the longer versions for more details, "secret tips" about things we "discovered" around. Pictures don't lie, so I added a few of them to illustrate my coments.
SHORT VERSION
1: SUITES DESCRIPTION; size, luxury, style: these are no "rooms".. Rather comparable to what other hotels will sell you as the "bridal suite" or "presidential suite"… Same applies to the grounds, which in this style you'd usually see in Royal Gardens or some 5* palace. Feel royal and enjoy! 2: AMAZING VALUE for what you get. Absolutely book on booking sites such as this one here, as we ended up paying 70 EUR for the Suite advertised at 175$ on the Kampung website.. TAXI SERVICE MUCH BETTER THAN ADVERTISED! 3: SERVICE: friendly, with an outstanding majordomo, this is an almost concierge/ butler-like service you'll receive. A few outstanding staff, while unfortunately most of the staff are new to the job and in training, missing the "service spirit" what led to some more than cumbersome discussions and as another reviewer pointed out, some staff might be well advised to work on their attentiveness. 4: LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS. famous rice terraces 200m away, but completely crowded. I add some "secret tips" on how to find some little marvels just 2-3 more minutes away, and find yourself in total solitude.. Thick jungle everywhere you look behind the gardens.
LONG VERSION: 1: THE SUITES. We slept in the SUITE VALLEY. In a building almost at the bottom of the steep valley, three floors host one suite each, so that you are alone on a huge floor. The ground and first floor suites are similar. The ground floor offers a larger terrace, but might lack a bit privacy as you'll need to close your blinds. The top floor feels even larger than the two others, as there is no closed ceiling under the rooftop. The suites have generously gigantic dimensions and consist of a main room (in the top floor suite, a corridor cut the sleeping room in two) of ca 60-70m2 (no kidding), a bathroom (at least 20m2, no jokes neither:) ) and a terrace on the full side of the suite (at least 50-60m2 as well) overlooking the lush forest. All is of outstanding quality: the walls are massive in brown local enormous stone. Furniture is as solid while extremely stylish, elegant, and comfortable. The bed is a joke of enormousness, two mattresses of about 1,50m large each and seem to be memory foam or so, as you wouldn't feel a movement when.. sharing the same mattress. I have back issues and often struggle for comfort while sleeping. I had a baby sleep for all of our 5 nights. We took breakfasts on the terrace table overlooking the morning sun flooded garden and the rich flower display. There are two lounging beds on the terrace which we used to read for hours. Massages there must be a dream, which we didn't realize as they are a bit overpriced compared o others we had around, and as we had extensive spa visits in ubud. We were nicely surprised and welcomed by a swarm of fireflies 2 of our 5 nights. What a wonderful sight! The bathroom boasts an open shower, fresh soaps, little hand and body towels. We loved the enormous bathroom. Seriously: it is 3 meters long, at least 80cm large, and ca 80 cm deep: you barely sit higher :) you can both persons lye there full length. The stone is massive and not slippery for maximum comfort. And… from everywhere in the bathroom, you enjoy the view through the full size ground-to-ceiling-and-wall-to-wall window (one more reason to sleep 1st or 2nd floor :) Our first night was in the top floor. Unfortunately, there was a water pump just behind the building and close to the roof opening, so that it disturbed me during the night (my wife was completely fine, though, hence what I write here concerns only noise sensitive people..) we were lucky that our downstairs neighbors moved out and the staff was happy to relocate us for the 3 next nights. They even helped us move all our stuff! There are indeed ca 200 steepsteapsteps to reach the valley suits, but we would highly recommend the valley vs the hilltop. While you clearly hear the traffic from the main road and the minor road running down along the resort, these noises are almost inaudible int he valley. I like to be without motor noises while relaxing, and can say for sure that I'd had felt unwell on top of the the hill. Also, when sitting at the pool, just in front of some of the HILLTOP ROOM, you will hear the noise of the kitchen which windows open just laterally above you.
GARDENS: these are designed with an outstanding care. Lush flowers, lots of colors, extremely elegant. They look so rich and sooth your soul. They actually more look like the park of a private rich villa or some palace park. On the other side of the deep valley which is very narrow, thick jungle which in consequence is very close and gives you this impression of being in the middle of it while sitting in your luxury and comfy suite.
2: INCREDIBLE VALUE. I am used to stay in business hotel à 200-300 EUR/night in Europe and the US. What you find here at 70 EUR (for the Suite, not per person…) is equivalent to these, or to what we found when we were upgraded to a business class return flight and stayed in Malaysian Airlines Business Hotel in KLIA. We stayed at 4 other very very nice accommodations during our 3 weeks Lembongan-Bali-Lombok trip, at an average price of 50-55 EUR. With 70 (or was it 75) EUR, Kampung was the most expensive. Nevertheless, for less than what you'd pay for an average hotel PER PERSON, Kampung offers a luxury feeling unequalled. And don't forget to include the butler/concierge-like service, enormous classy breakfast, and additional free features like the shuttle to 20min far ubud, which each reduce the de facto price. a privately booked taxi could cost up to 100 or 150K rupiah, an amount which you should reduce from the price of the room. The TAXI SERVICE is much better than advertised on the website. The staff will drop you and pick you up anywhere in the center, not only at "central locations". We recommend you to order the taxi at least an hour in advance, as if it might just have left with other guests, it might take them up to 60 minutes to be back. Do not hesitate to ask for out of hours service. We were talking to the owner about our night out when he asked us to tell security in the afternoon that we would call them about 10 or 11pm. Also, security was happy to drive us to our 4am travel away!
3: SERVICE As mentionned above, the staff is is ambitioned to create a concierge like service. Any problem arises, handymen will show in the flat and fix it. Special wishes? Just call. It was natural for the owner to tell us to wake up one member of staff who personally open-end the kitchen and cooked breakfast for us a 3:45am when leaving the hotel. A special mention to Desa and the other head staff (unfortunately forgot the name) Unfortunately, the rest of the staff are non-professionals in training. While doing their best, the service orientation and the lack of attentiveness pointed out by other reviewers were a pity. Their lack of English made some communication difficult and resulted in some more than cumbersome discussions, for instance when it was about the breakfast where some staff just pretended some items clearly mentioned in the menu cannot be ordered. I found myself arguing with some staff. minor flaws, ok for my wife but hypersensitive me. for those readers who like me use ear plugs to sleep in whatever situation…
4: LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS The resort is located about 15-25 minutes from Ubud, depending of traffic and the place in the center you're going to. Apart of the main road on the back of the hotel (reception side, on top of the hill), you are surrounded by the gardens and very thick jungle. The main road is about 15m above the entrance which you access by a side road. This side road runs down to the bottom of the valley alongside the resort and disappears in a bend on the other side. One of the things that attracted us to Kampung was the comment from so many reviewers about the rice terraces close by. The staff will be happy to direct you. And indeed, they are only about 2-3 minutes away when turning right on the main road. And, indeed, if you do not mind crowds of tourists, dozens of tiny shops with cheap things to buy and as many sellers coming to you to praise them, then you might be impressed by the scenery. I attach a picture of these rice fields where you see dozens of tourists queuing up the hill.
I know from lots of fellow tourists that it is part of the "vacation feeling" to be in the middle of hundreds of other tourists, in a place that must be of some value if there is such a crowd.
Nevertheless, if you are interested in seeing the same but being completely alone, you need to walk just 100 to 150m further (literally), and on your left you'll find fabulous first rice fields. We walked further on this road, turning right at the first Y-junction, and found ourselves walking in a loop for about 4 hours (always turning right at the next crossroad :) ) in the middle of completely deserted, rural areas, very picturesque rice fields, tiny untouched villages looking like museums but without any tourist shop… If you want to experience this, you can also simply follow the little road I mentioned above, which runs along the resort (turn right when exiting the resort instead of left to the main road), follow it to the bottom of the valley. After a few minutes, you'll see what I am talking about. If you fell adventurous… well, no I will not disclose my "secret" :), but just know that if climbing the other side of the valley, you'll find a marvel of labyrinth-paths between rice fields. …
5: EXCLUSIVE STYLE: I think this has been covered already. One more tipp here: get to know Doblet, the owner. He impregnated the resort with his holistic approach to perfectionism. He is responsible for the design of not only the suites, but the gardens as well, even though his main job is… cook. He created the entire menu as well. And while discussing with him one evening, he surprised us with desserts which are his very own creations. Absolutely perfect esthetically and gastronomically. It is not a surprise that the owners of one of the best shops in town (see my other review about IKAT BATIK) know him: taste and class :)
6: ROYAL BREAKFAST (included): I add some pictures for you to see yourself what I mean. I was astonished to read about some reviewers who found the breakfast small. Our advice, as mentioned above: be careful to make sure that staff understands what is written on the menu. you get the coffee or tea, plus a juice, plus the full continental or trad etc breakfasts PLUS the viennoiseries (little croissants etc, which btw you can mix). All ingredients are delicious. And frankly, when all is displayed on your stylish wooden old table, with the jungle in the background, the summit of a palm tree just same level with your terrace… It looks almost decadent. It was from far the best breakfast we had in all our 4 accommodations TheFOOD in the restaurant was equally good. There might be other better restaurants around, but for a resort own place, this was very very good. And, as mentioned by several reviewers, the views from the restaurant are stunning. Dont hesitate to go to the almost invisible down level of the restaurant, which almost only guests of the hotel know. You won't hear anything from the road, instead the noise of the little fountain in the fish pond. The tables there are japanese style and you sit on pillows on the floor.
7: MINOR FLAWS There were tiny little problems. Some lamps were either not working, or so weak they wouldn't help at all. In the second room, the water of the shower wouldn't escape, creating a little pond all over the bathroom.. But al problems were solved relatively quickly, even if we had to ask twice for some of them. When in doubt, don't hesitate to let the owner know.

What a beautiful place! A small resort with around 9 rooms. The view from this property is just lovely, I was blown away when we first arrived. All you see is the lovely green of the rainforest, jungle and landscaped gardens, and all you hear is the sounds of the rainforest like the gurgling creek, assorted birds, frogs and the resident chooks. You might also hear the sound of your own contented sighs. It is really a very nice place. I cannot rate it highly enough. Our view from our very large room (more like apartment size) was over the valley and to the small river. Just green everywhere you look which I find very restful. Gorgeous views from the restaurant, which has top-notch food prepared under guidance of the owner who was an international chef. Great variety of Indonesian and other Asian dishes. My daughter and I really loved the Gado-Gado and Satays, and the Indonesian breakfast dish of Nasi Goreng is fantastic. I recommend the fresh juices and smoothies. Very good prices at the restaurant. Service is exceptional, well done to all the staff. Pool area is lovely and the hotel provides a free shuttle to Ubud, just ask and the staff can help you with anything you need. We will be coming back. Thanks everyone at Kampung, we loved staying with you, see you next time!

My room was next to the road where loud motorcycles go passed till around 1 am. On the other side roosters are calling from 5 am. I don’t really see the point in paying for a hotel where you can only get 3 or 4 hours sleep. There may be rooms on the other side that are quieter but I wasn’t so lucky.

We enjoyed our stay here- despite the rather precarious steps into our room (I am an active 69 ,but I do have a few balance problems on stairs without handrails). I appreciated the staff offering assistance whenever I felt the need. The rooms are huge , we had a 3 room suite which included a large bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful . We decided to have dinner in our room at the table overlooking the forest .The meals were ordered from the restaurant menu and were promptly delivered , and of very good quality. Breakfast was provided ,and again very good. We enjoyed using the free shuttle into Ubud, which was provided at a time which suited us -although be warned in the late afternoon the journey may take almost an hour. This was a restful wind down at the end of 3 weeks travelling around Bali . I would recommend staying here ,but probably if you have young children, or have significant mobility issues this would not be the best choice because of the many steep stairs

During our trip around Bali, we chose Kampung Resort to have a couple relaxing days. It turned out to be a great choice, and we will definitely go back next time, except for a longer time!
All the rooms are spacious, and comfy, and well worth the price, with a luxurious 4-piece bath, and super-wide views of the forested valley. It is a small boutique hotel, built on a steep hill-side.
You can walk to the busy famous rice terraces 10 minutes up the road, where I recommend going early to grab a seat in a private straw-roofed bale overlooking the terraces at the cafe Alon-Along.
But to see a more real Bali, head to the right down the forested road directly in front of the hotel to the little hamlet of Tangkup (15 min. down and up the valley). You can go right (south) once there to some much more peaceful rice fields, and greet all the locals. Even the old guys say "hello" on the street.
The cafe/restaurant is fantastic, and I can see why many people stop by just for lunch. But it still was never crowded at all. I highly recommend it, even if you can't stay. The tuna sandwich and vegetable sandwich were fantastic, unlike anything else I had in Bali (I tried all the sandwiches on the menu, and those were the best). For Indonesian, the bubur ayam and soto ayam were also very flavorful. The desserts we tried were amazing, too, so don't forget to order. My 9-year old also loved the delicious mocktails.
If you can, please chat with the owner, Made. He's the fit man in casual clothes often hanging around the lobby. With lots of experience overseas, he's a sort of jack-of-all-trades, and a very interesting character. You won't believe how much of the hotel is his creation -by his own hands! You won't regret starting up a conversation with him!
Though the satellite TV was spot-on, the wifi was spotty, at best. But you don't go to a hotel like this to stay in touch with Facebook or work emails!
One thing to be careful about: don't use the electronic bug killer they have in the room. The first night, we came back from dinner to find several hundred dead gnats (tiny flies) on the sheets, probably due to the bug killer we plugged in before we left. At least they quickly cleaned up the room and remade the beds for us.
We'll be back as soon as we can!

Wow.... That was my first reaction when the bellman unlocked the door to Room 3. I have never stayed in such a large and airy hotel room. Close to 1800 sq feet if you include the huge balcony. The room is all stone with a huge (oversize ) king bed covered in an elegant ( though sometimes it droops on you in the night) mosquito net. The room is open with no ceiling , only a roof much higher up. From what i could see this may be the only room like this . But sleeping with the siding balcony door wide open and no airconditioning turned on, it was the perfect tropical sleep.the mosquito net is hardly necessary as there did not seem to be any around. The resident geckos make sure of that and add there charming chirps from time to time. The hotel is a short drive from the centre of Ubud, but the hotel shuttle (free during the daytime, 150000 rupiah for a round trip at night) is available any time. Walking around Ubud I realized how busy and potentially noisy some of the other places I had considered were so extended the stay from 2 nights to 4. A few things to note, there is a lot of stair climbing if you are down in the Valley rooms. Also there is not a lot to do around the hotel after 8 PM their restaurant is all that is available within walking distance. No alarm clock is required as the resident free-range rooster is very reliable around 530AM. The staff are wonderful, always available and really helpful. This is a place I would definitely return to

What a relaxing hotel! Love the ambiance and the staffs are very nice & accommodating. We have a very early tour and they prepare us a box breakfast every time, just make sure you tell the night before. They even waited on us during our late check in. The breakfast was good and very generous. We also eat dinner at their restaurant and when we can’t eat anymore, they helped us carry our leftovers in our room. We also avail their massage & it was wonderful, the therapist come at your room and I fell asleep during the session, good thing we were in our own room. We also requested late check out, they gladly accommodates our request though we have to change rooms. I really appreciate the effort, but the room ( room 9) they moved us was by the tegalalang rice terraces swing , so we can hear every shouts & giggles of tourists trying out the swing & bicycle rides atop . So no sleep or rest here, good thing we were just there for a few hours. Overall it was a relaxing & satisfying stay. I’ll gladly recommend this hotel , just avoid room 9 unless they sound proof that room.
