This camp is really hard to find. We had a driver and he found a sign to the camp. But after this sign, there was nothing. No road, just nothing. It tooks us 45 minutes drive in the bush to find the camp and we only did, because two local massai kids came into our car and showed us the way. The stuff is really friendly and they try to do best. To take a shower is an adventure, because one staff member stands outside while showering and gives you the water. And it is located in a special area where visitors have to pay a fee, similar to tarangire nationalpark. We had to pay 80 usd for two people, one car and one driver. Nobody told us that at the booking. So you have to pay the boking price plus 30 usd per person per day.
Djambo Djambo! Arriving at the campsite, we felt very welcome immediately. Masai men were waiting to at the entrance to welcome us and carry our bags. Arriving at the dining room we received a drink and some explanation about the camp site. After dinner (very nice!) we were escorted to our tents(bed, toilet & shower in the room). The tents are in the middle of nature, surrounded by lot's of acacia trees and the sound of animals. At night, the Masai men walk around the camp, on the lookout for animals. After a good night sleep, the shower is made ready and after that breakfast is made!
This camp is simple, but good. The kitchen is fine, the tent basic, but sufficient. Special is that you must indicate when you want to shower, Then the Masai fill a reservoir with 20 liters of warm water, after which you can shower for a few minutes. First dip well, then shower, 20 liters is used up quickly. The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and personable
Whistling Thorn Tented Camp is a genuine Karen Blixen Out of Africa experience. Enjoy the silence of the bush - the owner Hagai Kissila and his wonderful friendly staff and kind Maasai watchmen take care of you day and night. Don't miss the morning bush walk with Maasai guide. Optional game drive to Tarangire National Park with the owner as an experienced guide. Whistling Thorn Tented Camp is a must on a safari tour.
We stayed at this tented lodging during our 2 day safari to Tarangire National Park. It met our expectations and we accepted its limitations. This encampment is out in the bush but provides clean well managed accommodation. The staff are great and Edwin the Manager will pull out all stops to make your stay comfortable. Its the resourcefullness of the people here that you are provided a 3 course meal, drinks including cold beers. equipment charging facilities, bush TV and Masai entertainment, clean toilet and showers in your tent. It is camping with mod cons. So please dont expect 5 star living, enjoy it within the confines of the great wilderness.
