Our friends at African Travel Resource that planned our 21 day African Trek told us that there would be a driver to the Kasese airstrip waiting to take us to Ndali Lodge. Sure enough there was, a witty guy stylishly dress in denim and a nice long sleeve shirt. Kinda classy. Into the luxurious SUV we went and off to a great visit. A short way into the drive I soon realized we weren’t going to Ndali, we were WITH Ndali! Our driver was Aubrey who along with his wife Claire own and manage the property. I was certainly not expecting the owner to drive us and I was not expecting the kind of personal attention we received over our two day visit. We were not treated as guests at a lodging but as guests in a friends home. The property, main house and cottages are beautiful but not in a contrived manner. This feels like home. One of Aubrey and Claire dogs took a quick liking to my wife and when we were on property the dog merrily followed her. If we left the main house go to back to our oh-so comfortable cottage, the dog followed her and laid down on the porch until we left to go somewhere else. Cocktails on the lawn, dinner by candlelight, coffee and breakfast on the veranda overlooking the lake.....what’s not to love. One afternoon some of Aubrey’s friends and relatives were sitting outside enjoying an afternoon beverage. Aubrey called me to join them, followed by my wife and my two fellow travel companions. They welcomed us like we were part of the family and their stories told us so much about the history of the property, life in rural Uganda, the education system, and the efforts they are taking to improve the latter. The following days we had the opportunity to visit the estate and see who they grown their delicious coffee, vanilla, cacao. Their is such personal attention that in our two day visit I did not find one thing I would recommend they change.

We arrived at Ndali for what turned out to be our final meal in Uganda . Well what a treat it was. The food and service was excellent, the gin and tonic the best I've had in a long time and the view from the lodge outstanding. Aubrey thank you so much for making us feel so welcome , Chris had told us how wonderful your lodge was and we were not disappointed. The only let down was having to leave and only enjoy lunch! We enjoyed your company and meeting your nephew Joe, we hope he enjoyed the gorillas. The fish and chips we had for lunch were absolutely perfect ( put Rick Steins to shame !) The staff were all very attentive and the interior of the lodge was beautiful. The location is clearly perfect for chimp trekk No and the location by a lake is very tranquil. We hope to return and spend a few nights in your lodge on our next trip to Uganda, thank you again Aubrey for your kind hospitality.

One of the outstanding aspects of this home-away-from-home is the owner, Aubrey. He obviously enjoys his work and loves his hotel. He makes sure his guests’ needs are met by checking in with you throughout your stay and tries to foresee your requirements like pulling out a trampoline for the kids without being asked. There was plenty to do on site such as hiking around the lake, taking out the new pedal boat for a turn around the lake, swimming, walking to a nearby farm or the women’s craft shop at the entrance or using the open air gym. We loved it when Polly, one of the dogs on site, guided us in our 5 km walk around the lake. She’d go between the three of us to ensure we were all keeping up and knew the route as if she’d taken it a million times. The cottages exude old English charm from the metal frame windows to the luxurious bath tubs positioned to maximise your view of one of the crater lakes and the blue tinged Rwenzori mountains in the distance (the lodge is nestled on a ridge between two lakes!). The beds are extremely comfortable with duvets to keep you warm on cool nights. A choice of pillows too if you prefer firm or soft ones. The complementary laundry service is a nice touch also. Great for those on a long tour of the country. The gardens are also worth noting. The plants burst forth with flowers and the resulting colour throughout the property is delightfully. I took many pictures to try to identify the shrubs and trees when I return home to satisfy my curiosity. Let me finish by saying the food was delicious and requesting vegetarian options was not a problem at all. Much of the food was delightfully seasoned and aromatic like the golden cauliflower soup with cumin, the rice with coconut and the spinach ravioli with a hint of garlic. They even offer a millennial favourite like avocado toast for breakfast. I must end my review by mentioning we requested packed lunches on our day of departure in addition to our full board arrangement. No problem! The vegetable wrap in chapati was delicious and exceeded our expectations as we stopped mid way to Kampala for petrol. We hope to return again to take full advantage of the warm hospitality extended by all the staff at Ndali.

We were at the Lodge due to its proximity to the Kibale Forest National Park where we were chimp trekking. We were happily surprised by the four resident dogs who greeted us, although people who dont care for dogs or who have allergies will not be delighted by their presence. There are steep drop-offs around the property so those with balance issues like Parkinson should take note. Our US booking agent had us listed as full board Plus to include everything. we were surprised to be presented with a bar bill our final breakfast. The owner said "no one drinks here for free." Wine is good but cocktails were not. For instance, My husband received a mojito with granular sugar stirred in.

We arrived at Ndali after a very long drive, and as soon as we walked onto the property we were filled with happiness. The staff at Ndali is remarkable. Gilbert the manager and Stephen his assistant make sure you are comfortable. The entire staff makes you feel welcomed, as does the owner Aubrey who shared the story of the lodge with us. I fell in love with the dogs - Polly and Cybil who sat at my feet while I spent time reading while overlooking the crater lake - really made me feel at home! There were so many places to sit and take in the natural beauty of the area while watching monkeys and birds. Meals were delicious and dinner served by candlelight. Very romantic. Breakfast on the deck was a great way to start the day.
