Nestled between the Giriama village of Fumbini and the beautiful emerald waters of Kilifi Creek, Distant Relatives is both a message of optimism and an experimental model of environmentally and socially conscious living. Adventurers from around the world gather here to share tales of the road, mingle with the local community, and enjoy the beautiful ocean views and sunsets that Kenya has to offer. In just one hour's drive from either Mombasa or Malindi you could be joining us for reef snorkeling trips, moonlit dhow sailing, village walks and beach bonfires, wild cliff adventures, and various live music events. Distant Relatives is a new and unique ecolodge, hostel and backpackers, and an exceptional budget-friendly alternative to the classic hotels and resorts of the Kenyan Coast. Our accommodation options include camping, dormitories, safari tents, private rooms and beautifully designed ensuite bandas with their own charming private courtyards. Our kitchen serves some of the most delicious, mouth-watering and reasonably priced food on the coast. Wake up to the smell of local Kenyan coffee and go to bed after a full plate of fresh seafood pasta, grilled seasonal vegetables, or some of our signature Friday all-you-can-eat pizzas and free oysters! At Distant Relatives, our philosophy has always been to work around nature, rather than making nature work around us. For us, caring for the environment and supporting our community will always be a priority and a passion, and we are happy that such efforts have led to our recent certification by Ecotourism Kenya. Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers is staffed by a few travellers and a lot of locals ready with the best advice for your East African trip. In the spirit of Kenya's tradition of generous hospitality, we look forward to welcoming you to our humble coastal shamba and making your stay in Kilifi the most memorable time you've had in East Africa!

We got here because we read on their website about the camping facilities. We turned up with our 4x4 with rooftop tent. They said we could only park in the parking lot, which was really small, only up to 6-7 vehicles could park there.. we should pay the full price, of 13USD per

Dear Suzanne, We thank you for staying with us and giving us this important feedback. We are very sorry about your disappointment and are working on partnering with our neighbor in order to expand our camping site especially for vehicles this year. We will keep you updated and hope that you will give us a chance to make it up to you next time. Warm Regards, Your Distant Relatives.

There's a small beach just a few minutes walk. Not far to travel to larger beaches. There's possibility to snorkel within short traveling distances too. Better organise the snorkeling with a professional company, I went with someone from the lodge and it was a fiasco. Nothing else bad to say about them, distant relatives is an awesome place to stay. When I was there a couple of weeks ago there was bioluminescence but I don't know whether there's a season for it.

Hi there! Great to hear from you! Your cheapest bet apart from taking several matatus would most likely be by bus. There seems to be at least two companies doing Moshi to Mombasa (Tahmeed and Raqib) but I am sure there many others. Ask around at the bus station in Moshi as it may be that some buses continue on to Malindi which means you don't need to get off in Mombasa and can jump off straight in Kilifi where we are! Otherwise, if you get off in Mombasa, jump on piki or tuktuk to take you where the matatatus headed for Kilifi are based - known as the "Kilifi Stage" - everyone will know in Mombasa. Fastest but more expensive would be to fly (airports in Mombasa (60km), Malindi (60km) and Vipingo Ridge (20km)) or by taxi. If you would like us to organize a taxi for you from the bus in Mombasa, we can also do that. Please email us when you are ready! When you arrive in Kilifi, we are about 2km from where the bus will drop you. Any piki or tuktuk will know where we are and take you for about 100Ksh. Some more info on our website in the "Getting Here" section! I am not allowed to post any links here sorry. Keep in touch and see you soon! Safari njema! Romain

Hi there, yes we can definitely organize. We have done it a few times in the past. In terms of rates, there are many parameters - number of people, kind of food and whatever else you might be needing from music to photographers. What time of year? Will accommodation be needed? What kind, for how many people and how many nights? Hence, the best is that you send us an email and give us all the details you can. We'll take it from there. Pleasure hearing from you. Let's speak soon, Romain
