I regularly take classes at the North House Folk School and always stay at Nelson's when they are open (not always open for May or October classes). The cabins are immaculately clean, rates are great, owners are friendly. Love, love, this place! Have stayed here many times and never had a bad experience.

Stayed one night while thru hiking SHT. Cabin was super cute, clean, and offered at an affordable rate. Location is close to town and restaurants. Owner was pleasant and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

We decided to stay in GM on a whim bc of weather and lots of places were full. We got the last cabin at Nelson's and it was wonderful. Friendly owners, cute and clean, affordable! We'll be back for sure!

The hosts didn't do a good job hosting. We felt like a burden the entire time we were there. It was as if my family and I were at a youth camp and the hosts were the grumpy, melancholy, micromanaging counselors.

The most clean and cute little cabin ever! NEW AND FRESH(refurbished). Nice trail to town. Friendly owners. Great price. Not right on Lake Superior, just a short walk to the shore. Well kept and maintained.

First time staying at Nelson’s Travelers Rest and we were extremely impressed with the accommodations, hospitality, and price. Our “motel room” felt more like a cabin with a beautiful wood interior, homey touches, a front porch sitting area, very comfortable beds, and impeccable cleanliness throughout. The grounds offered a picnic table, campfire pit and small playground. The owners were friendly and welcoming. Overall, a very peaceful and comfortable property at a very affordable price. We will be back!

We stay here whenever we can when we are up that way... The cabins are not fancy at all but are cozy and clean. The owners make you feel at home and are very helpful. Price is average for the area. You can walk to downtown from there if you like, or just over the hill to walk along the beach. Often there is a camp fire going for the guests to sit around and enjoy and a play area for the kids.

A friendly reception upon arrival. I was assigned a spacious "motel"room with country design (not a cabin) for my overnighter at a very good price. Two queen beds, fridge, micro, coffee maker, seating group, TV. Comfortable bed, quiet, clean. Located close to lake, town and harbor. I wish I could have stayed longer!

I had initially asked for Cabin 3 or 4 as they are advertised with a lake view. Since they weren't available we opted for cabin #12. There was no lake view so I personally would not stay here again unless I couldn't find another location. This was our first visit to the North Shore and possibly our last so I was kind of bummed about there being no view of Lake Superior but THAT WAS MY FAULT not the property's. THAT BEING SAID...this was a very nice place to rest. #12 is a spacious 2 bedroom with a full kitchen, tub/shower, stacking washer/dryer (good hot water) and the pictures show you the rest. It was pretty close to Route 61 but it's tucked back into the trees and we really didn't notice traffic noise until about 5:00 a.m. when there seemed to be truck traffic from somewhere. If you like to hike/walk it's a short distance into Grand Marais and there are lots of shops to see and nice places to eat. I only have two gripes that I can think of and that was that the first night and next morning were quite chilly and damp and I couldn't get the cabin over 61-63 degrees. The thermostat had a note on it that said "Please do not touch"...I didn't bother the owners either (my bad) and turned on the electric heater/fireplace. That did seem to take the chill off but wasn't large enough for the whole cabin. There are a few quilts around the cabin which made it cozy to snuggle up on the sofa. There were several fans in the one bedroom closet as there is no a/c. The other gripe had to do with the light in the bedroom on the left as you face them. There was a light switch but we couldn't figure out which outlet it ran so even moving the floor lamp around the room didn't do any good. The only light, then, was the floor lamp in the corner on the other side of the bed. Kind of a nuisance. The blue room had a switch and it turned on the lamp on the dresser and there was a floor lamp in that room also. I met Mr. Nelson upon arrival, we stayed 3 nights and I never did see or talk with them again. They were available if needed. If it weren't for the view, or lack of it, we'd stay here again. NOTE: I walked down by cabin 3 and 4, even behind them, and I didn't see water anywhere. So I'm not sure about the lake views that are mentioned on the website.

Me and my other-half decided to make a small trip to Grand Marais for his birthday. I normally use Trailside cabins, but they were booked solid. Luckily, Nelson’s had Cabin #7 open, so we booked it in advance. We stayed for 2 nights, and the cabin was cozy, charming, and very clean. We used the fireplace one night, and the fireplace made it very warm (almost hot) inside the small cabin. Despite the bathroom being small, there’s a cute little alcove with plenty of room for holding towels and bathroom items. The kitchen was small but efficient, the staff was very nice, the grounds were clean and well kept, and it’s 2 miles from town so you cannot go wrong. There are only 2 cons to this cabin, hence the subtraction of 1 star. The bed is really firm, and the walls in this cabin are SO thin. I could hear our neighbors TV as if it was in our own room. Luckily our neighbors were pretty quiet, but if there were little kids or late-nighters over there…it could be troublesome. But for a short stay, everything was very nice and clean, and you cannot beat the location!
