I love staying at the Outpost! The owners are so friendly and very helpful with ideas of where to go for various activities. The basic but charming rooms, very reasonably priced, are always super clean and the view of Lake Superior is amazing! (I especially like staying during winter as I personally think ice and snow covered Gitche Gumee is much more beautiful then!) As an aside, it would be nice to have a small microwave in the basic rooms, even if it means a higher room rate. I will definitely be staying here on my many more visits to the North Shore!
This is an excellent family motel. It was clean, friendly, and the room binder was full of excellent advice. All rooms have an amazing view of the lake. Several sweet touches. We will definitely be back.
My husband and I stayed for a couple nights and if you're looking for an ultra modern swanky hotel with all the ammenities, skip it. If you're looking for wonderful owners, Todd and Holly and a clean, friendly place where the guests usually have bonfires on the shore of Lake Superior, take a stroll, carve your initials into the abandoned Boat House and quiet time after 10pm.......this is your place. It's not brand new but so very clean and, quite ,honestly, it's the ambience that keeps its regulars coming back. Try and book a room anywhere in Grand Marais and the Outpost will be the first one that's booked up. Just a few steps out your door and you're standing on the lake shore. At dusk, you can't tell where the sky ends and the water begins. There are just so many nice things I can say about the Outpost. You won't regret it!! FYI, don't mix up THIS Outpost Motel in Grand Marais with the Outpost in Cardston, AB, Canada. The management in Grand Marais is great and will NOT steal your money if you need to cancel.…
We stayed at The Outpost this weekend and we’re delighted with the room cleanliness, the big picture window overlooking Lake Superior, the comfortable bed, the impeccable customer service and the QUIET! This was a great night’s sleep experience all for $100! Sometimes simple is better. Thanks!
We stayed just one night - driving up from IL, we were headed out on the Voyager II in the AM. The location was perfect. The owners very kind. We had brought our own oatmeal and used the coffee maker in the room to make hot water. There was a small tv with a few stations which was nice to catch the weather/news before we headed out in the AM. It was clean. The shower pressure/temperature good. Nice exhaust fan in the bathroom. We stayed in an 'original' room - which gave it charm. If I was staying for more than a night, I would upgrade to a larger room. We did like that there were two doors that both had screen doors - which would get a nice breeze through on a warm night (when we were there, it was cold - so the doors got shut).
