We had an incredible experience at Clearwater. The staff goes above and beyond in ensuring that you feel welcome and comfortable. The lodge is rich in history and the breakfasts were amazing. This was a true boundary waters experience filled with quiet and true hospitality. We will definitely be back. The outfitters were top notch and we had a great time exploring the surrounding area. If you are looking for a lodge for a base of activities we couldn't recommend the Clearwater with more enthusiasm.

We have come up to the BWCA for a couple years and have stayed at Clearwater. It is remote, beautiful, and up until now has had an exceptional staff headed by Eric, Craig and Candy Danielson. We were surprised to find out that these 3 were no longer running the day to day operations. The change seemed to be very recent? No one knew outfitting like Eric. He has been our "go to" expert for outfitting the past couple years and his instincts, knowledge and skills are exceptional. We have also stayed in the lodge and been expertly cared for by Craig, Candy and the great staff they always hire. I agree with the recent reviewer - while the new staff was very nice, it was clear they were very unfamiliar with both the BWCA and how to run the day to day business. Not sure we will be back again...

Staying overnight at Historic Clearwater Lodge the night before heading into the BWCAW for a 4-day/-night canoe trip was wonderful way to ease into the wilderness. Our beds at the lodge were comfy and the fresh pine-scented breeze that wafted through our 2nd floor suite helped us relax for a challenging day of paddling and portaging. A hardy breakfast of delicious scones, hash browns, eggs & sausage the morning of shove-off hit the spot perfectly. Great friendly staff although perhaps not quite as knowledgeable about current angling opportunities or advice for such as we hoped. Overall, a top rate operation.

I am fairly familiar with Clearwater lodge, and have been visiting the BWCA for 40 years. Erik and family have been consistent and absolutely fantastic. When I visited mid August this year I was saddened to hear that they were no longer managing the lodge, and another management group was now in charge. This change seemed to happen very suddenly, and the current staff really seemed to struggle to get me checked in, get my permit and help outfit my needs. Don't get me wrong, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the lodge/location is absolutely fabulous, but the customer experience was not what I was expecting. Hopefully Erik and family will return, or the new management will iron out the details. I won't say I won't visit again, but I will think twice.

While I only stayed two nights due to an unexpected non Covid death in the family and thus a funeral in Ohio, I was greatly impressed. This was my very first time to this part of the country. I felt the price was more than reasonable for what I got with the lodge. The room was nice. The shared bathroom was fine and there were no problems with it. The place is clean. The internet works great. The breakfast in the morning was hearty (but if you are vegan/vegetarian or gluten-free, you might have to tell them). All the staff were very helpful and pleasant. The outfitter who helped with a day canoe rental was very knowledgeable and helpful. While I am an active single woman traveler, I am not so thrilled with camping by myself in the wilderness. There is plenty to do here with kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards available. Hiking is available. There are also many, many gravel roads for those with gravel bike or mountain bikes. I hope to return in the future.
