I stayed here with some buddies for a long weekend this fall. The cabin was clean, roomy and had a great view of the lake. We also had our own small dock and canoe, so we could go for a paddle anytime! Owners were a great source of local info and friendly. The original lodge building is super old and...

Thank you TCW_photo! Our lodge was built between 1929 and 1932, it's a beauty. I'm glad you enjoyed your cabin and Poplar Lake. We live here all year and love it! Hope to see you in the summer. -Carl

We've used them for outfitting trips into the BWCA and now we do a week in a cabin each summer. Nice that they have a variety of cabins so we can change each year based on how many family members are coming. And I have to say the cabins are immaculate. Great location with of course tons to do in...

This place was a super great place to stay. We have been visiting Grand Marais for years. Discovered this place last year. There are new owners who are super friendly and helpful. They are dog friendly. This is what we always wanted to be able to bring our Dogs along so they can go on trail walks with us. They...

If you are the type of person who wants to see and do everything in a week or two of vacation, you won't be able to accomplish that here. There are too many sights to see, too many trails to hike, too many lakes to paddle. And, if you stay at Rockwood, it is so peaceful and pretty, you may...

The owners are friendly, the property (and the windows!) clean and the location is fantastic. But there were a few things that really lowered our overall review - the carpet, the kitchen gear, and no keys for the cabins. No keys??? Now I get that this is the middle of nowhere, but we still want to be able to secure...

Thank you! We have already purchased the locks for the cabins, but as you said it's a work in progress and we haven't gotten them installed yet. The kitchen utensils have been replaced every several years, but repeated hard use leaves them in tough shape. That being said we'll work on getting some new ones in each cabin. Good idea...

When booking our trip we looked at several outfitters and picked Rockwood because they were cheaper then most and very quick to respond to emails. We visited Rockwood Lodge this last week for a week in the boundary waters. Carl and Mike, the new owners, were awesome to deal with and very friendly. The equipment that we rented was in...

My husband and I stayed at Rockwood for a week. I had stayed there many years ago with my family, under the previous owners. The new owners are really great. We could really tell that it was important to them that we enjoyed our stay. It was always easy to find one of them whenever we had a question, and...

I have not stayed at a lake cabin since I was a kid and this was the best one ever. Our cabin was about 10 feet for the lake and it was so quiet and relaxing. Our cabin was one of the original to the resort which opened in 1926. The lake view from our cabin was gorgeous too. Rockwood...

Rockwood Lodge helped me organize a 2 day backpacking trip along the Boarder Route Trail (BRT) in the Boundary Waters of MN. A few days before I was supposed to leave for Rockwood Lodge they called me and let me know the trail I was supposed to hike down had been covered up by a storm. They helped me find...

We stayed in a bunkhouse at Rockwood prior to entering the Boundary Waters. It was the best bunkhouse I've stayed in. Each bunkhouse had it's own bathroom with shower and heater. Rockwood is located on Poplar at the center point of the Gunflint, so even though they don't serve food, Trail Center and other nearby resorts do. The owner Carl...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rockwood is a unique and historic resort on the Gunflint Trail on the Eastern half of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Located on the 31st mile of the 57 mile long Gunflint Trail, we actually have a section of the original gravel trail that goes through our resort! Even the Lodge (built between 1926 and 1932) is an original building, hand crafted from native Pine with a large meeting room and gift shop next to the front counter. The Outfitting building shares the same area and is a complete outfitters for beginners to seasoned pros. High quality Kevlar, Royalex and Aluminum canoes, bent shaft paddles, high quality tents and sleeping bags are all available for your trip. We carry enough food for your entire group so you don’t have to spend your time preparing for your trip. We even have a bunkhouse with showers in each room, so you can drive up late the night before and still get a good nights sleep and one last shower before heading into the Boundary Waters. Day trips are a great way to get started or for those of us who are not interested in a tent; rent one of our cabins for a couple nights; each cabin comes with a canoe, which you can take into the BWCAW, bring a lunch and come back home each night to sleep in a warm bed and enjoy a warm shower. ... more   less
