From the moment we stepped off the ferry, to the moment 3 days and two nights later, we had an absolutely fantastic time at the Blue Heron. Deb is just the most wonderful host. She was there to meet us with a huge smile, and then took us on a tour of Gustavus, showing us all the landmarks and places to go. She knows everyone and is passionate about her small community. It is the kind of place where everyone waves to everyone else! The cabins we stayed in (2 couples) were beautifully appointed, very private, so comfortable and very clean. We slept like logs. We loved sitting on the verandah looking at the wildflower meadow and watching out for moose. Breakfasts were amazing, the best on our whole Alaska trip of three weeks. Varied, superb, loads of choice, all served with a smile. Deb has so much information about what to do. She saved us when our trip to Glacier Bay was cancelled at the last minute due to a boat breakdown. She managed to get us on to the Taz whale watching trip which was superb (separate review). Many others who were staying in other places could not get on it. Gustavus is a tiny, lovely place. Deb has free bikes so we took advantage of these and cycled about. We also hired a car which Deb arranged, that was very useful. There is one coffee shop, a few restaurants and that is it. We saw a moose and her calf in the road. The petrol station has old hand pumps. It is a total hideaway and so wonderful. All made even better by the lovely Deb and Pete. Thanks to you both. We would highly recommend coming to stay here!…
Our family of 4 (2 couples) stayed at the Blue Heron for 2 nights in early August. Our hostess, Deb, was very congenial on the phone when we made the reservation and I felt that we were good friends before we got there. And she measured up to my expectations! Deb met us at the airstrip where we flew in on a charter plane, and gave us a personal tour of Gustavus. Our two rooms in the guest house were ready when we got there around noon. The rooms were spotless and tastefully decorated, with attached bathrooms. There is a bench to sit on to remove one’s shoes before going upstairs to the rooms. The sunroom in the main house is available for reading and using wi-if. The sumptuous breakfast is also served there. In addition to a main dish of blueberry pancakes or an egg scramble with smoked salmon, fruit and granola with various toppings were also available. Everything was wonderful! Deb drove us to 4 corners for lunch soon after we checked in, and recommended a great place for dinner in the evening. Deb had also arranged for our tickets on the Glacier Bay Tour, arranged transportation to the dock, and provided us with parkas to wear. There were bikes available to use at the B and B, and our younger generation enjoyed biking to a meadow with wildflowers. On our last morning Dev drove us back to the airstrip and we said our “good-bys” and “Thanks” for a wonderful time!…
Glacier Bay is famous for Kayaking and camping. The beauty of the place and the wildlife are not to be believed. My wife and I have been there 4 times for backcountry trips. We've always stayed at the Blue Heron when in Gustavus. We just love it. It's a lovely, perfectly clean place on a beautiful property. The breakfast is fabulous.Every morning it's really special Deb is an amazing host, and can be really helpful. We are almost sure to be back
Slow right down, if you want to visit a town of about 450 people, you can only get to by boat or plane, head to Gustavus. If you want to stay in a place that makes you feel like you live in Gustavus, stay at the Blue Herron. Here’s why, personally met by Bev at the airport and given a short town tour and a brief overview of how things work around here. As you pull up the drive of the Blue Herron, first you will see the attractive timber cottages, then the bicycle shed, then the garden, then the hang out/ dining area. Every travel brochure, book, restaurant phone number, photo albums, etc. The rooms are bright and very comfortable, once again, every amenity. Including binoculars set on the window sill ( so we could monitor the comings and goings of the Bald Eagle mom and chicks in their nest, a few trees away) Then there are the legendary breakfasts that Bev and Pete talk such pride in offering their guests. No need to go into detail, anything you could want, Spuce Tip Syrup ? Fireweed Jelly ? No problem! If you find yourself out side and a bit underdressed, Bev has a collection of Jackets, beanies, boots and pants that would put many outfitters to shame, but make sure they come back, Bev knows everything and everybody. Thankyou Bev and Pete…
We could only stay one night but we loved it!. Our room looked onto an eagle's nest with a fledgling getting ready to take off. It was very clean and modern with full amenities. The breakfast was enough to fill us for the entire day with a terrific scramble and ham, oatmeal with fresh toppings, fruit, breads, and more. If we'd stayed longer we would have exceed our flight weight limit (just kidding). Lot's of books available on the area and local flora and fauna. We'll be back.
