Historic property in the center of town, great location. Unfortunately there's a need for some upkeep. The first room we were in was supposed to be a queen room suite with a pull out sofa. A very nice room but the pull out sofa was out of service permanently as it's been screwed in place not to open up. Apparently the front desk staff hadn't know this until we brought it to their attention. Staff then moved us. The only room left was a King bedded room. We took this room since we now needed a larger bed since the pull out sofa was not operational in the queen room. This room was also nicely decorated but then there was a problem with the AC not cooling off the room. This was the only large room left so we were stuck with it. We go to bed only to find that the mattress is worn out. Springs had too much wear to be a good mattress. No blackout curtains for the morning sun, only blinds. We slept really bad due to the mattress, uncomfortable room temperature, and then the morning sun coming in very early. It would be a great hotel if management would pay attention to details and replace worn out items.…
My husband and I traveled to Silver City from Charlottesville, VA for my graduation from WNMU. The travel experience was horrendous and full of delayed and canceled flights. By the time we got to El Paso (around midnight), it was clear we were going to have to book a hotel there and were not going to make it to Silver City to keep our reservation for that night. We I called to let them know and ask if they could possibly not charge us for the room that night since we also had to pay for a room in El Paso, they were like, of course we won't charge you! I was amazed. Then when we got there we were given a huge suite that was lovely. I loved the art deco decor and the city is super charming. For people not liking the size of the room, I would request one of their larger rooms... I would definitely return to this hotel any time I visit my alma mater!…
Have you ever painted a room? To do it well, you need to spend more time than you'd think possible on surface preparation, and only then paint carefully. Looking around our room at the Murray, it was obvious that someone who cared had done the work. This was representative of everything we saw during our stay. My compliments, and appreciation. Is the Murray a slick, brand-spanking-new property? No -- if you're looking for that, check out the chains. But -- if you appreciate character (and location, location, location), the Murray is for you. Note: you will be parking on the street. Also note: the folks who used the elevator complained that it was slow; we took the stairs for exercise and to appreciate the cool railing.
We were very much looking forward to our two nights at the Murray Hotel, having read about its renovation. There are indeed some Deco details that are nice. Our room was pleasantly decorated, clean, and the bed was comfortable. Being an old hotel, we expected the bathroom to be small; but wow, the toilet was so tight against the wall I don't know how a large person might maneuver it, and the sink actually extended over the tub a little bit. Water temperature and pressure was good. I didn't see evidence of air conditioning so if traveling in the hotter months it might be worth inquiring about. We were there in the month of March and it seemed like there were only a handful of guests. I truly hope that the Murray garners enough bookings to make it. A continental breakfast was included and I hate to say it but it was extremely meager and even though I'm no coffee snob, it was the worst coffee I've had in years. Maybe business hours in Silver City are different in the summer, but we were there on a Sunday and Monday and virtually nothing in town was open. Thank goodness the Western New Mexico University museum was open as it contains a treasure of spectacular Mimbres pottery.…
Continental breakfast was nondescript. Two night stay. Sunday morning I went to shower at six a.m. No hot water. Two explanations: boiler problems, then too many people showering. At 6:00? No offer to adjust our bill. Shower was fine the day before. My wife had not showered the day before and was looking forward to a hot shower.
As others have noted, this is a renovated art deco hotel in downtown Silver City. I think the renovation is attractive, but travelers should understand that the rooms are small compared to 21st Century standards, which leaves little space for anything more than the essential furnishings. Nevertheless, our bed was comfortable, and the in-room refrigerator was handy. Staff at the front desk were very friendly. We woke up early (About 3:00. We are old. This happens.) and decided to hit the road but were disappointed to find out that we could not get hot water for a shower. Our room was heated by a radiator, and I saw no evidence of air conditioning, so that's worth checking if you plan to stay in warmer months.
We spent the night here and were more than happy with the Murray. It's a throwback to the age of Art Deco but with enough modern amenities to satisfy the traveler of today. We chose the King Suite and it was more than we expected. The bed was comfortable and spacious so sleep came easy. The living room section of the suite had a sofa and two comfortable chairs along with a refrigerator and microwave. The suite overlooked Broadway St. but with the windows closed we didn't notice any noise. A nice continental breakfast was included in the rate. Overall we found it a pleasant change from the cookie cutter chain hotels we'd been staying at earlier in our trip.
The Murray Hotel is in a Great Location in downtown Silver City, NM. We found the staff we interacted with to be very friendly. Unfortunately, that's about all the positive items I can mention. The room itself has very old furniture in it and looks like it hasn't been renovated in 20-30 years, despite the website claiming much more recent renovations. The bed was not comfortable at all. While TV isn't that important to me in a hotel room, there were only 15 channel options, which is very miniscule in the year 2021. The breakfast each morning was very sparse in options. While I understand COVID has limited breakfast somewhat for hotels, more options can still be offered. There were no protein options at all. Another issue we had was during one of the days we were staying, they were doing repairs on the pipes in the building and had the water shut down from 11 AM until almost 6 PM. There was notification of this at check-in, but this should've been emailed to all guests in advance. Once this was completed, the next morning, the water coming out of our sink/shower was milky. I had to run it for about 15 minutes to clear it up. Again, something the hotel should have notified guests about. Unfortunately, I'm sure some people ended up drinking it or using the milky water to brush their teeth.…
This is a very nicely preserved historic hotel right in town. The lobby takes one back to old sophisticated lobbies. Rooms are somewhat small and very clean. Hotel staff is professional and welcoming. There is a modest breakfast available. The town is right there for you to go and walk around.
We booked this the same day we arrived for a two day stay. Price was extremely reasonable. Got a queen bed in the 4ft floor Normally I am not a fan of old downtown hotels. But The Murray exceeded my expectations. Opened in 1939 it is well maintained and very clean But I was underwhelmed by the room. It was small and sparsely furnished. Lighted by one garrishly bright overhead light or just one bedside light. Bathroom shows it's 1939 vintage as being very small with the tiniest of a sink and fixtures. The place is a great value and close to downtown. But if you are looking for any resort style room experience, then drive on.
