Southbank did not meet my expectations! The good: The newly remodeled lobby is very nice. The bar is great and the staff is friendly. The bed was very comfortable and lastly, parking was convenient. The bad: The hotel appears to be short on towels. One day, I waited an hour for a delivery of one towel when the request was for one set of towels. On another day I received a full set of towels, in a timely manner but the towel was dirty (see pic). The rooms need a deep clean. The shower doors are molded, the bathroom door frame is dirty and the room exterior door needs a good wiping on both sides.

This hotel had the most luxuriously comfortable bed I’ve slept in, since I stayed twice at the Marriott Palace in Egypt three years ago. My rooms in both the Southbank J’ville and the Cairo Marriott had river views (you’ll never mistake the St. John’s River for the Nile, but there’s nothing the hotel can do about that). This particular stretch of the south bank of the river is peacefully quiet at night, and appears to be quite safe. This is a FULL SERVICE hotel. You can take breakfast—a real breakfast—until 1100 in their restaurant (I particularly recommend the orange juice, which is fresh-squeezed and fabulous). Or you can get a grab ‘n’ go breakfast. Their large, airy exercise room had lots of equipment and was one of the better ones I’ve seen. Their lobby is quite stylish—the whole hotel is—and their lobby bar has five or six beers on draught. I suspect that under normal circumstances their clientele are either business guests or conventioneers, and hence that both their occupancy and rates are considerably lower right now due to the pandemic. Even if you’re coming to Jacksonville to go to the beach, you may want to consider staying in this upscale hotel for what might well be less than you’d be paying for a barebones motel right on the ocean. The Southbank is currently “transitioning” from Delta to Marriott management; the transition isn’t complete, which caused me a slight bump in the road on either end (my Marriott booker had a spot of trouble finding it in his system, and the front desk had another one finding my reservation on arrival). The hotel, though riverfront, is in a cul-de-sac (the St John’s twists and turns a lot trying to find the Atlantic) and can be a little tricky finding. Parking is also a little tricky—your best bet is to get back to the hotel in the early evening, when the valet parking lot still has spaces available (you park the car yourself since valet service is not provided during the pandemic; but for the same reason, you save money: no valet parking fees; it’s free). My main review point is that this an elegant, stylish and eminently comfortable full-service hotel, currently available at remarkably low rates: an absolute bargain for a grand stay.

This is a recently new member of Marriott's Delta hotels. Not at the Marriott level of quality and dedication that you might be used to. Checking in with a super long line. No bonvoy members' line. Extra towels or baby crib not in room when checked in. No microwave in room. Old safe below the bathroom sink super difficult to use. No laundry bags. When dialing zero from room telephone long waits. Stained towels, wet housekeeping rags left over. Floor not fully clean and A/C filters super nasty. See pics for the last two. Had respiration issues at night due to the A/C nasty filter. Door handle/latching needs fixing. Good and respectful staff. Face Masks mostly used by both employees and guests. No noises above, thanks to top floor placement. No side room issues. Lots of parking. Bar and rest in lobby. Remodeled rooms. Great bed and pillows. Amazing TV selection.
