The York River Inn Bed & Breakfast is situated on a high bluff overlooking the York River in a colonial-style building. It is the only waterfront bed and breakfast in the Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg area. The York River Inn Bed & Breakfast is the ideal location for a relaxing visit in historic Yorktown, Virginia. The York River Inn B & B is also a delightful place to enjoy the historic areas of Yorktown and Williamsburg. Gracious settings, generous amenities, and knowledgeable host create a memorable experience rather than just a night away from home. All three guestrooms are filled with standard amenities enhanced by many charming and useful additions--the innkeeper's extensive travel and hospitality career have contributed to his skill at providing the finest accommodations possible. The common area includes a sofa and comfortable chairs, where you can browse through piles of current magazines. The refrigerator is fully stocked for guests. The innkeeper has a vast selection of Virginia books, maps and extensive materials on travel from all over the US and the world. You are welcome to enjoy the shared deck with deck chairs, as well as the cookies and treats always set out on the dining room table. A gourmet breakfast served in the elegant antiques-filled dining area overlooking the river is a highlight of the experience provided at the York River Inn. The Inn is only a short distance from the colonial area and other attractions of Yorktown and is only 15 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg by the way of the scenic Colonial Parkway. The local area is filled with historic, cultural, and entertainment activities without the stress of a busy crowded town. In Yorktown itself are two major historical attractions celebrating the winning of American independence October 19,1781 when George Washington accepted the surrender of the British under Lord Cornwallis, an event commemorated by the 1881 victory monument just down river from the York River Inn.

Detailed Reviews
The York River Inn Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful, colonial-style home. We had a clean room and bathroom with a gorgeous view. We even had snow on our visit. Bill, the inn keeper and owner is a true walking encyclopedia of history. His knowledge is impressive. Bill made a delicious breakfast, especially the Posset!!! We look forward in returning one day soon!!

What a nice thing to hear especially since I've been shut down since March 1! I miss my guests--and folks like you make what I do a pleasure! During the off-time, due to the world emergency, I'm cooking up a storm, so when you return I'll have a lot of new dishes to share! Thanks for your compliment--and I look forward to your return in better days to come!

My husband and I came to York River Inn as a 1 night getaway. I was a bit suprised to find the inn actually in a neighborhood. There is a lot of construction going on right now so the view is somewhat diminished. Originally I was a bit disapointed but after we spent some time at the Inn, the charm really takes over. The host is warm, fun, knowledgeable and helpful. He really could not have been more accomodating. We had a lovely dinnner that evening and in the morning our host made sure to let us know that as he had no check ins to our room the next day we should take our time in leaving. It ended up being quite a lovely stay. His breakfast was probably the best I have ever had !!!

We enjoyed the Inn very much. Food is wonderful. View of the River and access to Yorktown and the beautiful drive to Williamsburg and Jamestown on the Colonial Highway makes Yorktown River Inn the place to stay.

I experienced an amazing breakfast that was full of creative, absolutely delicious food and wonderful conversation with other guests and innkeeper Bill Cole. The spectacular view over the river made me feel as I was on a cruise ship. Bill is a superb cook -- breakfast was like dining for dinner. He has mastered the attention for detail and knows how to pamper his guests.

My husband and I spent a weekend in Yorktown at the York River Inn. It was our first time staying at a bed & breakfast. We loved it! Our room was nice and large, the owner was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and breakfast was amazing! It was such a relaxing experience. The owner suggested resaurants and historic sites to visit, all of which we enjoyed. Yorktown was very quaint and friendly.

This is a relaxing b & b that almost seems like a Virginia history museum. We stayed in the Presidents Room which has a balcony that provides a spectacular view of the York River and Coleman bridge and is just as wonderful at night as during the day. We watched a US Navy submarine and escorts head down river at breakfast and enjoyed the schooner ships during their sunset trips. Bill, the owner, is an encyclopedia of information about Virginia and her eight presidents. Our room was filled with memorabilia he has collected including original US maps dating back several hundred years. And as for breakfasts, ours were a delight of fantastic food including crab-a-dab-a-doos, thin bagels/pimento cheese, fruit salads, herbed tomatoes, hard boiled eggs covered with a sausage shell, asparagus that melted in our mouths -- well, check Bill's website and what you see is what you get. He makes everyone feel right at home and will suggest places to visit, excellent restaurants or just sit with you and chat about his travels around the world. The perfect host! Oh yes, the candied orange peel is sooooo good. He even gave us a bag of it to take with us as we traveled home. If in the area again, we will definitely stay here.

The York River Inn provides the consummate Bed & Breakfast experience. The small inn (only three guest rooms) is impeccably decorated with a bevy of Virginia-themed items, from maps of old Virginia to the Virginia state shell and everything in between. Yes, that Virginia even has a state shell is one of the myriad of facts I learned from innkeeper Bill, who is a font of knowledge about anything and everything Virginia. Bill made us feel right at home—from his easy conversation, to home-baked cookies, to the absolutely incredible breakfasts. As a Washington, DC resident, the York River Inn is a great weekend getaway that I hope to be able visit again soon. Highly recommended.

We found this Bed and Breakfast on the Yorktown website. We stayed over the July 4th holiday and were able to walk to all events taking place in Yorktown to commerate Independance Day. Bill, our host, was hospitable and extemely knowledgeable about Yorktown and Tidewater. The breakfasts were gourmet and delicious! We felt very comfortable coming and going as we pleased. There is a very pleasent view in the common area and we especially enjoyed the birds at the feeders. We do hope to return for another visit. There is more to see in Yorktown than we could accomplish during this visit. We also found the Yorktown website and the visitor brochure (provided at the B & B) extremely helpful. Fireworks in Yorktown are spectacular!

Wonderful Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are all beautiful ( we peeked) Our room was the Presidential suite overlooking the York river. The house's location is an easy walk down to the beach, the battlefield and to town. The breakfast was a special treat, excellent food and great conversation. Owner Has an excellent knowledge of the area and history of Virginia in general. Highly recommended.

We got lost and arrived 30 minutes late and the inkeeper was visibly irritated by that. He took us to our room and before we could really take in the details of the decor, he began going through a strange ritual of taking the bedcovers off the bed and all the decorative pillows and putting them away in the closet as he told us the time of breakfast, where things were, what we could help ourselves to, etc. That left us with a feeling like we were unwelcome guests. Strange beginning!
The room was overlooking the large river and was scenic, but noisy due to the highway a block away.
The decor itself was reminiscent of staying at an older aunts house that had collected a variety of nic nacs, old comfortable chairs. tons of books, some historical wall pictures over the years. There was definitely a male influence to it. ( the owner is a single native historian) He puts a direction book of how to enjoy your stay in the room. What TO do and what NOT to do. The main floor is very dark , with some nice antiques in the dining room.
We went off into town and walked to all the attractions. It is a small town!
The next morning the host was friendlier and made a nice breakfast of fruit and breads. He left to a meeting and didn't visit with any guests much. We enjoyed chatting with the other guests.

Response from Yorkriver, owner at York River Inn Bed and Breakfast
Responded Apr 22, 2008
Check-in time of 4 - 6 pm is clearly stated on the Inn website. Check-in time is confirmed at the time of making a reservation. Check-in time is re-confirmed in written form on the confirmation to the guest. Clear and detailed directions are on the Inn website. Clarity of directions is confirmed at the time of making a reservation. Clear and detailed directions and a map are sent with the confirmation. The guests arrived at 6:45 pm. They had a cell phone and did not call. Their home address is 8.2 miles from the inn. The innkeeper was driving out of the driveway when the guests arrived. He returned to the house, gave a full tour of everything (albeit condensed), and turned the bed down for the guests. Breakfast consisted of “crabadabadoos,” a local specialty of the inn, poached pears with cranberries, baked tomatoes, and almond stuffed biscuits, not “fruit and breads.” Breakfast is served at 8:30 am. Check-out time is 11 am. The innkeeper left the guests at the breakfast table at 10:30 am to get to a meeting at 11 am. The comments in the guest book are: “ [Date] Dear Bill {Name} and I had a wonderful evening and morning in your cozy B&B. The room and your breakfast were wonderful! What a special get-a-way with {Name} during his two week leave from his deployment in Afghanistan Sincerely, {names} Yorktown, Va PS. Plus my very best birthday.”
