My wife and I stayed here in February of 2020 a month before the Covid lockdown in the U.S. I was attracted to the place because of it's midtown location, proximity to Grand Central Station and the reviews. Some people really love the place. I'd say it's a decent bargain as the rates are fairly reasonable by NYC standards. I asked for a room change due to the fact that the furnishings in our first room were a bit worn and dated. It was granted. I typically stay at hotels where I have a points membership and some status so as to avoid issues like these. This hotel is independent. Also typical of NYC hotels it's in an old building so creaky floors, narrow hallways and small elevators are par for the course. The lobby is ornate & eclectic but not as sparkling as the image suggests. Overall I'd recommend for a brief budget NYC stay but your mileage may vary.

Very quiet on the 8th floor. The room was clean and nicely decorated. Perfect location for going to MSG, Macy’s, Empire State Building, Times Square, any of the Irish Pubs, or Korean BBQ places. No food service at the hotel, but plenty of delivery options. Go to Market Crates on 33rd street for amazing carry outs!!

We have stayed in this hotel a few times and we keep coming back. This time it was different- we were coming over to get married. Probably not the most organised couple for a wedding but we couldn't have done it without the Avalon. Staff are fabulous, friendly, helpful and warm. A few days before the wedding I went to reception with my list of wedding needs. Within a few minutes -Wilson (someone I will be forget) had our photographer, driver and even my bouquet organised and I had a few names and addresses for hairdressers. Every time we met Wilson he reassured us that everything was in order. It was too good to be true- guess what -it all went to plan. He made everything so simple. As for the hotel- its lovely. The hotel itself is small compared to other NY hotels but rooms are big compared to other NY hotels. Its beside a Five Guys, a block away from the Empire State Building, 2 blocks from Macys. Location is perfect, rooms are perfect, staff are amazing, hotel is perfect. One thing that guaranteed is that we will be back. Hopefully our friend Wilson will still be there
