Nestled in the Upper West Side, The Lucerne Hotel is lauded for its excellent location, with easy access to transit, Central Park, and local eateries. The establishment's rooms receive mixed reviews on size and comfort, and while the staff is generally celebrated for their professionalism, some guests have faced service hiccups.
The Lucerne exudes a traditional charm, although opinions on the decor's freshness vary. Despite its quiet ambiance and cleanliness earning high marks, the hotel's value proposition is debated among travelers, given the disparity in room amenities and pricing.

Detailed Reviews
We had a lovely stay at the Lucerne Hotel on West 79th. Rate was reasonable for a holiday weekend.
Check in was fast and pleasant. Everyone was professional. Although our room was not ready at 12pm which we expected we left luggage with concierge. We returned after seeing a matinee show and claimed our luggage. Room was clean tidy and old world elegance. Bathroom was up to date and clean. Room was quiet and very warm and we had a good night sleep. We asked if there was coffee in the room and they said no but they sent up a keurig coffee maker and coffee.
We had a delicious dinner at Nicematin a French restaurant adjacent to Lucerne and offers 10% disc on breakfast. There are several options for dinner nearby.
Hotel is conveniently located one block from the 79th and Broadway subway stop. We took the #1 subway to theater district.
We went to another restaurant for breakfast.
It was a nice hotel to stay for a birthday weekend.. Definitely would return.
Only negative would be we wish breakfast was included or heavily discounted. They also have a resort fee which seems to be common now.

We enjoyed our stay the Lucerne Hotel in New York City so much we've booked a return trip. It is a charming hotel in a great location.
We decided to stay on the Upper West Side to be near family and friends in that Manhattan neighborhood and thought we'd be far away from so many of the famous sites, but that wasn't the case at all! The Lucerne is just 1 block from the 1 Subway line which puts you in Times Square in 10 minutes and at World Trade Center in under half an hour. To get to Museum Mile you can walk through beautiful Central Park (just 2 blocks away) or take a 79th Street bus across it. One of the great attractions of the city, and a must see for families, is the American Museum of Natural History is one avenue away. Next to AMNH is the wonderful small museum of the New York Historical Society. You can also walk or take the subway to Lincoln Center. Another big plus for the location is all the restaurants representing a veritable United Nations of cuisines. We enjoyed breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel, Nice/ Matin. Delicious and good value (ask for a coupon at the front desk to save 15% off breakfast).
For a small up-charge at the time of booking we treated ourselves to a King Suite and and it was definitely worth it! The rooms are pale gold with dark wood furniture and nice framed prints on the walls. The bed was plush and very comfortable. Other amenities included a Keurig coffee maker (with supplies) microwave and fridge so you can easily have breakfast in your room. An umbrella and thick robes were also provided.
The staff was warm and welcoming and answered all our questions.
The Lucerne Hotel is a great option for getting away from the noise and crowds of mid town while still being in a great location.

I won't stay anywhere else when I want to be on the Upper West Side. It is a 4-star hotel. The bedding is very comfortable and clean and the room sizes are large for a NYC hotel, especially if you get a "Superior class" room. I love the fact that they have a strict covid policy: you have to show proof of vaccination to use the fitness center. Its location on 79th is very quiet. There is a doorman who usually opens the door when I exit or enter the hotel, and he makes me feel welcome and safe. There are more than enough electrical outlets to charge my devices. I've stayed there many times and it is always a joy.

Enjoyed our time at the Lucerne; it's an older NYC hotel with a bit of charm to it but also a definite amount of fraying around the edges. Location wise it's fantastic, and the staff were all top notch. Our room's air system was less than ideal though - the AC wouldn't go below 68 degrees and even then, it had a pretty rank smell to it. We ended up just shutting it off and cracking the window, which worked.
The bathroom was showing its age for sure, and the elevators are tiny and sometimes don't fully open/align with the floor fully (i'm talking like, it was off by a half inch so nothing dramatic but definitely noticeable and I suppose for certain people, could be a point of concern)
For the two nights we were here, this was totally fine. If you're coming to NYC for a longer time and especially if you've never been there before though, you might want to splurge a bit and end up somewhere a bit more polished. But most folks won't have any problems at all here.

Dear Riptor We thank you for being our guest and sharing your review. We are very pleased our staff and location were rated so well by you. We will certainly address the issues you mention other than the size of the elevators which are a pretty standard size, by boutique hotel standards. We very much hope to welcome you back in the future.

I’d give this a 4.5 only because I don’t like the climate control at all. The unit had no auto off. The fan just keeps running even if the heat element cycles off so there’s cool air then blowing. But this has been our go to hotel for years. The location is near two metro stops and a short walk to the museum of natural history. There are lots of nice restaurants nearby, but non better than the one inside the hotel- Nice Matin! They have great food at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
During covid the Lucerne stayed afloat by becoming a city homeless shelter and that caused quite an uproar in the neighborhood (see the NYTimes) but it closed and refreshed itself, and now there is zero evidence of its use as such. All apparently new carpets and the upholstery and mattresses seem new. It would have been a good time for them to add some color to the brown and beige color scheme that predominates the place.
If you can afford a suite, get one. It’s nice to have a separate sitting room This stay is especially quiet and comfortable. We will be back! One other thing. The people who work here are just great.

Although the rooms were dated we have had a good stay the the Lucerne. Any issues we had were resolved efficiency by the concierge team and the housekeeping team ensured the room was very clean and welcoming throughout our stay. Although modernisation of the guest rooms is required we were satisfied with our stay and would reccommend the hotel largely based on room size, cleanliness and location.

We stayed here a week in a comfortable suite for a good (by NYC standards) price. The Upper West Side location is excellent, with two subway lines nearby and the crosstown bus at the front door. The neighborhood is full of good restaurants with varying cuisines and price ranges, and Nice Matin, the hotel restaurant, is good too. We had no problem with noise from the street or other rooms, and the air conditioning worked fine. The bed was very comfortable.
The front desk staff, doormen, and housekeeping staff were always friendly and helpful. The elevators were fast (worth a lot in a tall building). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and I'm sure we'll stay there again if and when we return to New York.

I stayed at the Lucerne 8-10 nights (3 visits) in the last six weeks. Each visit my room got smaller. On the last visit I begged for an upgrade because the room was simply too small for two people. By the way, you could nearly touch the bed while standing in the bathroom. My sister arrived that same day and got an amazing (full suite) upgrade. I was staying four nights, but they showed me no appreciation for frequent stays. I am moving to another NYC hotel.

A perfect place to stay for our family of three during our week long stay in NYC. The location, on the Upper West Side, is very convenient to the subway as well as many excellent restaurants and around the corner from Zebars. We stayed in a Queen Suite which had two very comfortable queen beds in a large separate bedroom, with a small lounge off the entry with mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Hotel is clean, well cared for and quiet. A/C worked perfectly and kept our suite very comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to be close to Central Park and an easy subway ride anywhere in NYC.

We had a overnight stay at the Lucerne when visiting with family in Manhattan. Normally we stay further downtown at a chain hotel, but this was recommended based on location.
This hotel is very attractive and comfortable. Apparently it has been recently renovated, and they really did a nice job. Decor is traditional and elegant, with many design highlights.
As to the important stuff--the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was convenient, and everything was clean, clean, clean.
At check-in we asked about a shower vs a tub, since we both have some difficulty climbing into some tubs. This option was not available, but the clerk suggested that they provide a shower chair which would help. This was delivered immediately, arriving at the same time as our luggage.
There is one caution, and one which caused me to delete a star. This hotel is not accessible if you have motion disability. The entrance has several steps up to the lobby and there is no ramp of any kind. More to the point, there's not even a handrail, which would mitigate the problem. You're left trying to lean on the stone column and the pole that supports the canopy for support. While the doorman was enthusiastic in providing support, it's not the same.
We enjoyed Sunday morning brunch at the adjacent Nice/Matin restaurant.
Apparently, there is no valet parking, but a discount is provided at a garage about a block away, for net price of $50/night.

Hello,
There’s a few taxes, state and city I believe, but that it to my knowledge. It’s a smaller independent hotel with great access!
Subway right down the street on broadway and multiple bus stops within the area. Just blocks to either riverside park or Central Park.
Lot of great grocery stores and wonderful restaurants,
Hope you enjoy
In my opinion, it’s not safe and you are correct they are housing that population.
My suite had a separate sitting room, so I would imagine yours would too
