Firstly, this is the YMCA, not the Ritz-Carlton. PROS: Check-in is easy. The room is basic but the mattress is comfortable. Free wifi (look for password displayed on the wall near the elevator of your floor). There is keyed entry to the women's room (though everyone on the floor shares it) -- 3 stalls, 3 showers, and 4 sinks. The secret sauce to bathing in shared space is to wear a bikini and flip-flops. There is a separate bathroom for men. Each room has a window air conditioner, closet space, desk. Towels and soap are provided (no washcloths). During my stay, housekeeping is every 4 days (which is OK with me, I prefer more privacy). Security to the property is pretty good, you must use your key card during the day and exterior doors are locked in the evening. You have access to the pool/gym facilities. Central Park, subway, pharmacy, a bakery, convenience stores, food stands are all within a 5 minute walk. The location can't be beat for a budget stay in New York. CONS: Halls and restrooms have little to no AC (it's like a sauna). Sometimes the ladies restroom door is not closed properly (less secure, but I had no problem). The shower drains don't clear very well. In 1 or 2 minutes, you'll be standing in 2 inches of water (and showers are not cleaned after each use). There is a $10 per night fee. This may not be obvious when you book but it is in the fine print (payment is due at check-in). Otherwise, a great place to lay your head and see the city while paying a fraction of what other hotels charge. I saved over $500 with a 2-night stay but I don't think I could have stayed longer.…
This hostel is near central park and the subway is just 5 min away. The room was not very clean and the AC made lot of noise, the bed was not comfortable and the bathrooms were always dirty with hairs everywhere. The place didn’t have a kitchen or entertaining areas like other hostels do. I wouldn’t stay here again.
They charged mu credit card when I booked. Not mentioned when I booked. They say front desk is open 24 hours and daily housekeeping. NO! After 4 days I had to demand that my room be cleaned. When the front desk was closed in the morning, no WIFI connection. I was not told anything about the facilities available to guests when I checked in.
I had a one-person room with a shared bathroom. The room was small and the A/C unit was very noisy and it could not be used while sleeping. This hostel is a good choice if you need cheap accommodation for a couple of nights near the Columbus Circle.
Thought I would save some money while attending a concert at The Beacon. The AC worked very well and the room was clean. That’s about all I can say. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the pillow was tiny. You get what you pay for. Next time I’ll pay the extra for a hotel room. I’m sure it would be fine for other people. The staff was very nice, it just wasn’t for me.
There aren't many affordable options in NYC so I was happy to discover this place. It's halfway between a hostel and a hotel. The rooms are small, the bathrooms are shared and there are no communal kitchens or microfridges in the room. But you are paying a "resort fee" to have access to the YMCA's gym and pool so you might as well take advantage of it. They do require a swim cap but they sell them at the front desk if you don't have one. The pool also special hours on weekends and holidays so you can't use it whenever but it's still a great perk. It's easy walking distance to Times Square, Central Park and Columbus Circle. There are several food trucks around the corner as well as a Starbucks, Target and Whole Foods within 5 minutes walk.
The best location. Across the street from Central Park. Right beside Madonna’s apartment! BUT: The walls badly need repainting. The rooms are dirty. The bed wasn’t completely fresh, I took it apart and found some hairs and the comforter cover looked used with some weird dirt on it. Gross!!!! I don’t think they wash it with each guest. The bathrooms were very clean (I had the deluxe room with semi private bathroom.) The cleaning staff seems on top of it. The air conditioning barely worked and the room was hot and stuffy in April. I wonder how bad it gets in July? I won’t stay here again but it was an interesting experience. I guess it’s an OK option for those peak periods when everything is $300/night.
The West Side YMCA is definitely a no frills place to stay, but the location is excellent. You're right next to Central Park and Columbus Circle. Times Square is an easy walk south. We stayed in 2 different rooms. The first had a bunk bed and was quite small, but the bed was comfy and the room was clean. It also had a small TV and fridge. We had a semi-private bathroom, which was down the hall. This meant we had to scan our key on one of the bathroom doors to get in, but once inside we had privacy while we got cleaned up. The bathrooms were kept clean and tidy. We were able to upgrade the second half of our stay to a room with a larger bed and an in room bathroom. Again, this hotel is no frills. It can be rough around the edges, but it's clean and comfortable at the end of a long day of sightseeing. We did not have time to take advantage of the gym, the pool, the sauna, and stuff like that, but they looked nice. I'd recommend the West Side YMCA. If you're visiting NYC, you should be out doing stuff, not sitting around the room. It was everything we needed it to be.…
I am doubtful about their security - definitely the Japanese harassment was perfectly implemented in the way that they get more supports with less spend than victims paying the fee for deteriorated services only to serve the Japanese harassment groups. Else, it was fine. A YMCA facility. Something you can imagine for YMCA guest accommodations would be all set and ready to welcome you.
