Originally built in 1834, three single family brownstones sat at the corner of 17th and Irving Place. Over the years, the corner brownstone was torn down and a small apartment building was built in its place. The two remaining brownstones have stood the test of time, and they now create The Inn. While once combined as a single family home, the brownstones also housed everything from apartments, The Ingersol Mens Club, a Speak Easy, and a Beauty Parlor and Day Spa. After completion of a three year renovation, The Inn at Irving Place opened its door in December of 1994.

    Antique boutique hotel
Found this gem on travelocity as i needed a location near union square. It got great reviews and we loved i too. It could use some refurbishing and regrouping. Charming, big rooms, friendly staff, great location and reasonable prices.

Not bad, but not the best
It's taken me a long time to write this review, but here it goes. My husband and I spent a weekend at Inn at Irving Place and were thrilled at the idea of staying in "B&B" type place in NYC. Some positives: great location, beautiful furniture and elegant things throughout, exciting to be staying in a beautiful brownstone (actually two that are combined) with a key to Grammercy Park, nice little touches such as plush towels, amenities in the bathrooms, and just a good "feeling" of being someplace special. Some negatives: sometimes these ideas are all in our heads. Just because a place is incredibly expensive, it doesn't mean it's worth it! And frankly, this place just wasn't worth the $500+ per night that was charged. There was something in my pillow that caused such a reaction in my face that my husband didn't recognize my swollen face in the morning. I was asked to hurry up and finish my cup of tea one morning because they had to get ready for a luncheon (bridal shower or something). I understand they want to take advantage of the whole Victorian setting that attracts the side business of showers and luncheons and tea parties, but they shouldn't push away their guests like that. If anything, they could set up another corner somewhere for those of us "in their way." I also didn't find the front desk people all that kind. One in particular, a tall gay guy with very fashionable clothing, was almost uppity. That wasn't necessary. If money isn't an object, I'd say try it just for the fun of staying in a neat old brownstone. But if you don't have money to throw away, don't bother.

    Don't believe the website
We got the idea to stay here out of a travel book--1000 Places to Visit. Both the book and the Inn's website play it up as a charming throwback to the turn of the 20th century with period antiques. Apparently charming means well-worn, and antique means rickety. The staff is very freindly and attentive. We were greeted with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. But bone shaking garage music from the adjoining club kept us awake the first night. A bridal shower and a photo shoot on subsequent days occupied large areas of the inn and we were relegated to overflow space for breakfast. It is a great location if you like the Gramercy area. The inn has WIfI (with intermittant interruptions), digital cable, and very comfortable beds. The staff is very responsive, but if you are looking for comfort, luxury, convenience, or value look elsewhere. If you like trendy, artsy B&Bs and don't mind sacrificing value then go ahead and stay here.

The hotel is very cozy. The decor is eclectic antique, but somehow comes together for a nice atmosphere. The tea room is beautiful, but we only had breakfast there. Downstairs restaurant doesn't match the rest of the hotel and is nothing special, but there are lots of places nearby. Location is great next to Union Square. The only problem is the old radiator heating made it difficult to regulate the temperature, it was just trying different positions of the dial and waiting.

What an absolute gem! Gorgeous decor, so old New York spirit! Just charming! We had the Eloise de Wolfe room, it was bigger than my old NYC studio apartment!!! Couldn't believe how spacious and the attention to detail!!! Just blown away. The staff was so nice and helpful, the breakfast was cute served in an adorable tea room, and the location simply can't be beat. Now that I've found this, it is my go-to New York hotel!!

Outstanding service - great people - an awful room. Terrific location with a charming breakfast. Sadly, the room left much to be desired. First, there is no desk. Second, the couch - more like a settee - seemed to have not been reupholstered since 1900 and the cushions had all aged away. The result was almost torture as you sat on barely covered wood slats. There is no ottoman so the two other equally aged straight-backed chairs were no comfort. The coffee table had a raised edge so that could not even be used for resting your feet. Terribly uncomfortable. Second, the air-conditioner was set to maximum and could not be turned down or off. The remote control was unresponsive. As a result, I had to open all the windows to the 90-degree heat just to get some balance. Third, there was almost no water pressure. It took minutes to fill a glass of water. The shower was a dribble of tepid water. It would take hours to fill the bath. Fourth, when I locked the door, the lock fell out. Finally, there is no elevator and there is no warning of that. I was on the top floor (3rd) in 90-degree weather and did not appreciate that after a long day as the floors are tall. On balance, the terrible room offset the advantages of the terrific period breakfast, outstanding service, and terrific location. I would not stay there again.

I could tell it was going to be good but I had no idea how good. Absolutely beautiful accommodation with loads of authentic period detail. Alfonso looked after us like we were favourite family too. Cannot recommend it enough. And be sure to have a cocktail at the amazing bar in the basement.

The staff is warm and welcoming from the time of reservation to checkout. Thanks Alfose! This property has been well maintained as it is an older hotel. This was one of those places that when you walk by, you think to yourself, I want to come and stay here someday. And we finally did, 18 years later. A few steps away from Gramercy Park, this hotel is an escape from the busy and very loud New York. Time feels slower here. It's close to great restaurants within walking distance and Union Square. The Victorian decor is just lovely and romantic. We don't mind that it's a bit worn. The rooms are clean and bed very comfortable. For us, this is better than the big corporate hotel chains. I wish more people would support independent hotels. It was a lovely and memorable experience. Thank you!

Stayed for four nights. Pleasant, clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and professional (special shout out to Alfonse!). Beautiful Victorian architecture and decor. Great area near Union Square, good restaurants nearby. Could be improved: wifi/internet connection (is very bad) in rooms, breakfast selection, and lighting in room is poor (dim and dark).

The location is fabulous, and adjusting my stay dates was super easy. Upon coming to the building, my luggage was swiftly taken and I was overall impressed with customer service. While the rooms likely would have been amazing and quite lush at its conception, the fabric on the furniture is frayed and everything looks quite a bit dated. The Penhaligon toiletries add an air of luxury, but when I was adjusting them I noted that one of the bottles (presented laying down) was actually half empty! Makes me wonder about the cleanliness, as reusing toiletries just smacks of dirty and cheap. For the cost of a night's stay here, I would expect much more.

This beautiful Inn is located in Union Square which is convenient to everything you want to access in New York City. The Inn has spacious, comfortable rooms and very courteous, helpful staff. Several outstanding restaurants in the neighborhood. Only problem is the night club located on the ground floor. Pulsating music and loud, drunken Millennials until 2:00 AM. The Inn also held social gatherings both afternoons we were there. Not very restful. When we were checking out, we were informed the other side of the Inn is more quiet. Would have been nice to know before we booked. If not for the night club, would have rated a 5.

Decided to try a new place and way to stay in lower Manhattan while visiting family there. This was closest hotel, walking distance. The street Irving Place is a neighborhood jewel of old historic houses, parks and restaurants. Great decision to stay here. We were greeted by Alphonso the Inn's most friendly host. Got the history, lay of the land and keys to our room. Stairs up to third floor overlooking the street. Comfortable, large room, bed & antique furniture. High ceilings with fireplace. Fresh and clean room. Ask for Washington or Irving or O'Henry rooms. Nice morning breakfast . Look forward to our return visit to the Inn on Irving Place.
