Built in 1926 as a residence hotel, the original Surrey was home to many of New York's most eccentric celebrities. JFK, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, and other famous faces who recognized the allure of exceptional, discreet service. In re-creating The Surrey, we collaborated with acclaimed interior designer Lauren Rottet of Rottet Studio—to maintain the integrity of The Surrey’s history while modernizing New York's most intimate address. Rottet's inspiration was a New York City townhouse passed down through the generations. The Surrey is New York City’s only Relais & Chateaux boutique hotel, where discreet service allows guests to retreat from the public—and keep a low profile in an otherwise high profile lifestyle. The Surrey is a residential haven and luxury Upper East Side hotel getaway where guests access and revel in what makes New York City special—without compromising calm personal space.

A very nice option for the Upper East Side
If you're looking for a quiet, comfortable hotel on the Upper East Side, this is a very good option to consider. The staff at the front desk is friendly and helpful. There's a diner, 3 Guys, just around the corner on Madison. The rooms and bathrooms are large and the beds are from Duxiana and very comfortable. The shower pressure is amazing! There's a subway stop about 3 blocks away at 77th and Lexington. The things that keep me from giving The Surrey 5 stars are small. We were there for 5 days, and on only one did we receive both washcloths and hand towels. Other days it was just one or the other. One day we left the room at 10:15am, came back at 3pm and the room hadn't been made up yet. The bed pillows could be much better. The edges of woodwork and furniture are starting to show wear. Small items, but at this level of hotel, that's what sets places apart and there are a lot of high end hotels to choose from in NYC.
Dear p s, Thank you for choosing The Surrey and for sharing your review. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay, and rest assured, we will discuss your feedback internally to ensure a more flawless experience going forward. We hope to have the opportunity to host your trip to New York City. Warm regards, Claes Landberg General Manager

First Stay in the Upper East Side
The Surrey was sublime in their service. The room was large, well appointed and the service staff efficient and timely. The Upper East Side location was new for us and exceeded our expectations for location, nearby restaurants and shopping. We are walkers and the proximity to the park was an important consideration in our selection of location.
Dear BobD1257, It was a pleasure to welcome you to The Surrey and the Upper East Side. We thank you for your kind words regarding the hospitality of our staff and your appreciation of our well-appointed rooms. We are further pleased to read that you found our location, adjacent to Central Park and close to many shops and restaurants, to exceed your expectations, and we look forward to serving as your New York City pied-à-terre in the years to come. Warm regards, Claes Landberg General Manager

Great hotel, prime location, but no coffee!
Everything about the stay was great. The quality of the room, the superb customer service, everything! The one thing I was disappointed about was that there was no coffee in the room. That may be OK, as long as there is coffee in the lobby. While there was coffee in the lobby, the coffee was removed at 8:30 AM. I was not able to partake. We need our coffee!! Please consider investing in some small coffee machines in the rooms or leave the coffee out in the lobby until 10:30.
Dear agordon106, Thank you for choosing The Surrey. It was a pleasure to have you with us, and we are delighted to learn that you enjoyed your stay. Please know that our staff can provide in-room coffee setups for our guests, and we invite you to reach out to us for this service on your next visit. We hope to welcome you again soon. Warm regards, Claes Landberg General Manager

Great location. When we first arrived we were shown a room that was considerably smaller than we had booked, it was rectified after we requested it be corrected and an argumentative discussion with the check in staff who did not have the correct information. We showed them our booking and they reluctantly agreed. Room service was nonexistent. The front desk staff were positively belligerent when we queried about getting room service. We've travelled a reasonable amount over the years and have not struck such an attitude before, anywhere. For what you pay to stay their the arrogant and dismissive staff are an unpleasant feature. Do your self a favour, stay somewhere else. Very disappointing.

I LOVE the Surrey! I used to live in NY and this beautiful East side boutique hotel is the epitome of upper east side. Every time I visit I love staying here. Beautiful memories here throughout the years. Location is key, and this is walking distance to the train and right on central park.

We arrived very late and the check-in staff handed us warmed towels. They delivered complimentary champagne to our suite before we entered the room, incredible customer service. Next to Central Park. Incredibly romantic hotel with high fashion vibe. The french restaurant downstairs was superb, also some evening they had live jazz. The best place to stay Manhatten.

I've enjoyed previous stays at the Surrey so I prepaid $3,678.03 for a reservation for June 11th on January 12th. Nancy Padolina (Director of Reservations & Distribution) notified me on June 2th that they had suspended operations due to COVID-19. I immediately requested a refund. She eventually responded on the date of my reservation that she would "follow up on this request with our Financial Team." After numerous phone calls I have received no response other than an email on the date of my reservation suggesting that their advance purchase policy meant that I had lost all of my money. This is despicable, especially for an establishment that continues to advertise flexible cancellations due to the virus. Be VERY careful!

I had the pleasure of staying at The Surrey in the early part of March to celebrate my birthday. This was my first time at the hotel and definitely will not be my last. From the very beginning, I was connected with Leilani Santiago, the guest relations manager. Saying she was excellent is an understatement. She ensured every need was met from dining and transportation needs to having some nice very (and thoughtful) birthday surprises placed in my room. Upon check in and check out, it was a very seamless and enjoyable stay. So thanks to Leilani and the entire staff for your thoughtful and very professional service. Best ... Troy

The location is perfecto! One of the safest places in the Upper East size. It is very convenient for shopping, and the famous Central Park is relatively close! Classic architecture with the old world charm. The breakfast is good as the title suggests. The room is really beautiful and spacious, elegant and clean, the bed is very comfortable, too much, is a city view room, perfect scenery. The doorman at is particularly welcoming! The bedroom area is average sized, but the bathroom is massive! The hotel lobby is connected to a restaurant that looks very popular, but we have not tried it because there are many supermarket restaurants around! Ask the front desk with a room of your preference. The Taiwanese restaurant nearby which is recommended too!

A charming, art deco style traditional beautiful hotel. Beautiful rooms, mine had widows to three directions. Very good service. Style! The only criticism could be that the bar was, at least on Saturday night, both very noisy and very dark, not comfortable for an old-fashioned person. And of course, the location is perfect. Most certainly, I want to be back! One more piece of information: A very nice restaurant, particularly for breakfast but also other meals just round the corner on Madison, Three Guys.

What an amazing stay at the Surrey the past few weeks. From the moment I checked in with my dog, we were warmly greeted and the warmth continued throughout the stay. The entire team was attentive and accommodating. Thank you to Vicki, Jessica, Lilly and the rest of the front desk staff. Georgina and I were sorry to have to leave and can’t wait to stay with you all again soon!

Comfortable but small room that needed some TLC. Furniture scratched and chipped and chair upholstery worn. Hallway dark and carpet worn with black plastic tape covering seams. 3am garbage trucks ground away below us for an hour preventing any sleep. For the price and reputation, we expected more. Staff was excellent and saved the day!

I stayed in this Hotel for 2 nights for business. Rooms are tired and need a refresh. Desk was showing wear and chipped and bath had pealing paint and mold in the shower. Beds are comfortable and HVAC worked fine and not overly loud. What I was most disappointed in was the mini bar charge I received after checking out. I had noticed someone discreetly opened one of the jars. When checking out I told the front desk and they assured me I wouldn’t be charged. I called 3 times to ask for it to be reversed with no credit received. This is certainly not the customer service I would expect from a hotel of this level. I will never stay here again. Go across the street and stay at the Carlyle or the Mark.
