The InterContinental New York Barclay, an IHG hotel, is often lauded for its harmonious atmosphere, marrying luxury with a warm welcome, and its unbeatable central location. While the rooms score points for comfort and style, some guests mention that they can be on the smaller side and occasionally noisy.
The service receives mixed reviews, with commendations for staff professionalism contrasted by mentions of sluggishness and disorganization. Despite the cleanliness and appreciated amenities, the value proposition is challenged by high costs and extra fees, which some travelers feel detract from the overall experience.

Detailed Reviews
The IC NY Barclays has a beautiful lobby upon entering. More a traditional atmosphere, upscale (more 'royal' vs modern/hip vibe). The check in process was very easy as being IHG members, I was able to check in online in advance and just picked up my room key cards as the front desk. I'm no to minimize any sort of fuss with the check-in process. It seems like the two parties ahead of me were just bogged down in trying to get 'their way'. Anyhow, upon receipt of the room keys, I was kindly directed to the elevator and the bellman brought up our luggage about 5 minutes later. The room itself had 2 full sized beds (for our family of 4). Very clean and bathroom felt very tidy. Seems as though IC hotels use the same brand of shampoo/conditioner/body wash as it was the same brand that we had when in Korea back in May (which I really liked the scent). I really liked the location of the Barclays as it was away from the chaos/madness of Times Square or other tourist/heavily foot trafficked area. It's NY, so you hear sirens and cars revving, but that's anywhere you go. The lobby bar seemed very busy, but comfortable. I didn't go as we had lots of other places that we needed to visit. Nor did I go to the hotel restaurant or fitness center. All in all, the price we paid for this up(per) scale experience and quiet location would make me very likely to come back in future NY visits.

Hotel's Favorite
I had to wait for 3 months before TP would let me review my most recent stay at the Barclay.
Travelling to the NJ/NY area for a Baby Shower, my wife and I were fortunate to find space (and an upgrade) at the Barclay in New York. We last stayed September last year and found the Property and its employees excellent. This visit, I was at first surprised to find some of those employees no longer with the property but if anything the level of service , hospitality and attention to detail under GM Sofia (thanks for the upgrade and goodies) has increased with the addition of Hotel Manager Matthias Kaiser . Mr Kaiser was on top of everything and stated in constant touch with us and this was the first time all the benefits afforded an Ambassador with the facility fee were explained in great detail for us to fully utilize those benefits during our stay.
On checking in Sunday (early so I should not be complaining) my room wasn't ready and I later found out that it was an Ambassador guest who had on-lined checked out but continued to stay in his room for the late check-out accorded their status. I am also an Ambassador but know when I on-line check out or settle my bill earlier than check-out, I notify the front desk so they know not to notify housekeeping to start cleaning the room for the next guest. To my fellow guests, try and remember that in your visits so other guests aren't waiting around. And one more reminder to my fellow guests, I saw most guests at The Parlour leave nothing on the table when they left. These service employees work really hard to provide a great experience. Remember to leave a gratuity. I could tell by my Housekeeper's reaction to us every day that not many leave a gratuity every day. These are the same guests who gripe on social media about rates being added by Hotels and lack of service. Not in this Property.
Despite the room situation, Mr Kaiser sent me to guest relations and this is where I was fortunate to meet Sanela M who was amazing. First she explained the issue, then found me another room and then also arranged for our accompanying relative with 2 small daughters to have their luggage out of the room assigned to one on our floor. All of this on a Sunday when staff would not have been as heavy as a weekday. She was simply amazing and kept in touch with Mr Kaiser (who was off BTW) until we were all settled. Kudos Sanela
Our upgrade was awesome, Housekeeping was great and this visit made use of The Parlour restaurant and while it may look small at first glance, have tables all around so that guests did not have to wait very long for seating. The buffet is full of everything one would need, from fruit, to breads, cereals, a hot breakfast and with Easter coming up had special cookies for guests. The bar at night looks like a movie scene. Check it out before you leave (using your daily credit)
The Bellmen staff were also excellent with moving, storing and packing luggage.
BTW one of the vouchers provided is for Ole and Steen next door. You must try their pastries all day, lunch and evening items (all with a 10% off)
Another tip. Parking can be found 1 block from the hotel and using ParkWhiz (no in/out) found a rate under $35 a day, unheard off.
Located on the East side, it's easy to find an Uber and getting around is a breeze (as long as you don't have to go to the West side). Lots of restaurants around and easy to find shopping, it's an awesome location.
While there try visiting the upgraded Grand Central with its amazing food hall
Kudos again to GM Sofia for running one of the best InterContinental's we have stayed at. I was glad to Meet Manager Kaiser on our last day to thank him personally and to send our regards to the GM for a wonderful experience.

I stayed at the Barclay in 2023 and returned in September 2024. There is a separate check-in desk for Ambassador members where check-in was efficient and courteous. The staff member was able to allocate me a room with two beds (which could not be booked using points online), which was appreciated. The room itself was reasonably spacious (rooms with one bed are better in this respect) and there was plenty of space for clothes in both wardrobes and draws. The walls between the rooms are rather thin.
The Executive Lounge at this hotel is excellent with a wide range of food offered at breakfast and then an afternoon tea offering early in the afternoon with drinks and canapés later in the day. The resort fees are an unnecessary pain, but seem to be an accepted part of New York City hotels.
Lastly, the location of the hotel is excellent with easy access to several Subway lines at Grand Central as well as to JFK via the new LIRR line from Grand Central.

I liked the location. Without being in the center of Times Square, you are close to everything and away from the noise.
The beds are very comfortable and the room is very correct.
The hotel is classic and elegant in style.
On a negative note, I would say that the rooms do not have great views due to their location and that I found the price of the bar to be very expensive (for this reason I am not giving the maximum score). I asked for 3 bottles of water to take to the room and it cost me $55. I found it excessive.
So I recommend this hotel and I would visit it again, but without buying water 😃😃😃

The hotel is staff were all very nice, even in the midst of winter! Hotel was kept very nice shape and in the rooms you could adjust up the temp up to your liking (unlike some other hotels that cap out the temperature). Thank you to all the staff!!

Beautiful property in a great location. Easy walk-ability to everything in the city. The hotel was decorated wonderfully for Christmas and my six year old was beyond excited. Our room had a wonderful view out to the bustling street below without the addition of too much noise. The bed was large and comfortable. My only concern was with the treatment I received at the Parlour Restaurant. My six year old, a friend and I sat down in the evening. We ordered two waters and a lemonade and the server was visibly irritated. Setting our drinks down we all said thank you and got no response. It wasn’t until we placed an alcohol and food order that she even addressed us verbally. This was a trip I planned thoughtfully for my son as he loves NYC and Christmas. If a hotel has such things as a “letters for Santa” mailbox and activities geared toward children staff should be accepting of parties of families.

Danielle, it is pleasing to know you enjoyed the festive setting and convenient location of the hotel. We're glad your room provided a pleasant view without excessive noise. It sounds like your planned trip was a special occasion for your son, and it is unfortunate that your experience at the restaurant could have been better. Your feedback is important and will be taken into consideration to enhance guest experiences in the future.

We recently stayed at this hotel for a week. We chose the hotel because we wanted a good standard of accommodation for our stay and we were IHG members.
The room we had was clean and comfortable , also very quiet and so we slept well. The bathroom was also of a good standard.
However, for the cost of the room and the additional charges, i was disappointed.
The hotel seems totally focused on profit and not on customer experience.
For example, for the $40 amenity fee that is charged per room (on top of room cost), you can claim back $30 on food and beverages. A can of diet coke is $15 !!! So hardly a ' benefit' . Wifi is a standard provision in all hotels, so saying it is part of the amenity fee is a bit cheeky.
When you check in, you are also asked to pay an extra $200 a night 'security' deposit for any incidental damages to room, which seems exorbitantly high ; especially when checking other similar standard hotels.
The cost of breakfast per person is nearly $50 !!! Ludicrous pricing when literally around the corner there is a vast choice of options for a fraction of the price and of very good quality.
The area for service of food is also small, and for a large hotel, this provision seems wholly inadequate.
There is no complimentary water provided in room, though there is chilled water and ice available from machines on even numbered floors.
The fridge in the room is absolutley packed with mini bar stock ( at ridiculous prices), and there is a small little area about 6 inches by 6 inches which they have labelled for 'personal use'. This I found very insulting. It was 95 degrees most days, and if i wanted to buy and store a chilled drink i was only 'allowed' a can size area !
Then there were things like the toiletries in the bathroom. Yes they were a lovely brand name and good quality, however the container was never filled beyond a third of the bottle size . As the weather was so hot we were having several showers a day and had to ask for these to be restocked. Felt a bit like being rationed!
This just seemed to demonstrate the mindset of the hotel that they want to be considered a luxury offering but offer the minimal for this and maximise profits at all costs.
For that reason i will look elsewhere when returning to New York

Navigator769027, thank you for staying with us and for sharing your experience. We're pleased to hear that you found your room clean, comfortable, and quiet, and that you appreciated the high standard of the bathroom. We value your feedback regarding the additional charges and amenities. To clarify, the $200 hold requested at check-in is simply a temporary hold to allow guests the convenience of charging incidentals to their room. This is not a charge to your card, and any unused amount is released upon departure. We also want to mention that we provide small refrigerators upon request for guests needing additional space for personal items. Additionally, the $30 food and beverage credit included in the amenity fee is valid not only for in-room dining but also in our restaurant and minibar, offering flexibility during your stay. We regret that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, and we will carefully consider your comments as we continuously work to improve our services. Thank you for being an IHG member, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future.

I’ve been diamond at IHG for over four years, and I always look forward to the next Intercontinental property that I will explore. Seeing the nearly-100 years of history of the hotel, I used my diamond member confirmable suite certificate on NYC Barclay, and…. It truly was a mixed experience. I really wished that I could have loved the hotel and all the historical heritage that it bears, but I only ended up liking it.
Good: extremely fast room service. I order a ghree course meal, and it was deliveeed to my door in 20 mins. The breakfast was also good (you absolutely should try the salmon), and the heated floor in the restroom was super confortable.
The not-so-good: there’s no late night room service after 10:30. If you come from the West Coast jet-lagged like me into the late evening, you’ll have to leave the hotel and find some late night bar or pizza place.
The bad: I had a suite, but the living room had no WiFi signal reception (??). I had to either use my phone’s hotspot or move to my living room to work. I went to the front desk asking for an Ethernet cable for wired internet connection, and they didn’t have one. I had to call their 3rd party tech support, who did absolutely nothing to resolve my issue. I have no idea if this is the case for regular rooms that aren’t suites, but that was a huge bummer for me since I was here for a business trip and needed to work in my room every day.
While the internet issue was minor compared to the overall solid experience, for a suite that’s marketed at nearly 1000 dollars per night, I certainly believe that there should be more attention paid to the details. I am leaving a lengthy rant on the internet not to overshadow the positive aspects of the hotel, but hoping that it will improve.

We stayed at the Intercontinental Barclay for over a week during Christmas. It’s a nice hotel in a great location: we walked to most places and really enjoyed taking in all-things New York.
I was a little underwhelmed with some aspects of the hotel:
1) Checking out from one of ours rooms at 9am, which must be one of the most common times to check out, there was only one person at the Reception desk and she sounded quite inexperienced as I kept hearing her say to someone “of if I haven’t done this before” and she took a very long time dealing with the person. Eventually someone came to sort her out and they were then able to start processing other customers. When I checked out of our other room some hours later, the same person was still at the desk and again it took a very long time with everyone. I appreciate we all start somewhere but perhaps peak hours on their own is not the best.
2) As has been mentioned by most reviewers: the soundproofing in the building is non existent. This is really not up to the standard one expects from a hotel that claims to be five star.
3) Service at the bar was very slow at times. The worst was having to wait for 15 minutes to sign the bill for two gin & tonics on one occasion.

Beautiful property in a fantastic condition and maintenance that sparkles and shimmers. HOWEVER, in order to gain more roomes they just split a couple of hundred rooms in to two and so rooms are smallish but quite comfy but again small.
This is a property mainly caters to business people so don't expect fuzzy treatment or personal touches, don't get me wrong, the service is excellent and professional and the stuff is very nice, but, this is not a touchy feely property with chocolate on your pillow or bottle of water by your bedside (Unless you are willing to spend $13 for a 12 oz bottle). There are no real views to speak of from the windows but the hotel is nicely located in midtown with restaurants and shopping around the corner.
This property is a cash cow for the ownership and it is well run and presented.
If you want large rooms with spectacular views and a little bit more flexibility and attention you might want to try the Time Square IniterContinantal but there you will not get the grandeur of a classic hotel, the polish or the hoity toity neighborhood.
