Excellent budget option for New York in a mid town location. However the rooms and beds are small (the mattress had seen better days) and restroom and shower facilities are shared. Choice of three good bars on the door step and a large supermarket nearby. Great subway and bus links from Union Square only a block away.
If you're on a budget, but would like to enjoy the privacy of your own room, coupled with a good downtown location in the center of Manhattan, look no further than Seafarers International House. Located right next to Union Square, this cozy hotel provides comfortable, air conditioned private rooms, with shared bathroom in the corridor. There is free Wi-Fi and a TV in the rooms. The staff is very friendly and even though there isn't an in-house restaurant, there are numerous good options for eating out nearby (for all tastes and prices). Union sq metro station is a couple of minutes walk. I cannot stress enough how amazing the location is for the cheap price of the hotel! A bargain stay in an otherwise very expensive area of New York!
I stayed here about 3 years ago and had a pleasant stay but my experience a few days ago was just the opposite. Our room looked run down and need of much repair. Cords hanging off or pulled from the wall, base boards missing and my biggest issue, very poor heating. The room was freezing so I complained and was given a space heater. It warmed the bedroom somewhat as long as we kept it constantly running. Not okay with me. I complained again and was told I could leave and receive a refund. I ended up staying because most other places were booked or way over my budget. One good thing was the room appeared to be clean. Sadly I will say, I probably will not be staying here any longer.
I've stayed here many times before, and aside from one unhinged housekeeper, have always had a lovely time. It has all that I need when visiting NYC: it's clean, safe and basic. On a chance, I happened read the reviews prior to my October trip, and saw two reviews from September that claimed there were bedbugs on the 11th floor. I wrote to the manager to explain my concern, asked how he could reassure me that I'd be given a clean and safe room, and he never responded. For that reason alone, I gave 4 stars; otherwise, I'd have given 5 stars. I always book a room with a private bath. I stayed on the 3rd floor with Irving Pl and E 15th outside my windows and I had no issues with noise as I used a white noise machine. Hello, this is NYC. There is no place with no noise. The lady at the front desk was very warm and courteous. The older, distinguished looking gentleman is not warm (and hasn't been in all the years that I've been staying there) but he's always done his job.…
Quite good for a non-profit hotel. Inexpensive, comfortable, with good WiFi throughout and very quiet. Room had air conditioning, TV and a sink. Shared bathroom was always available but could have been cleaner. Staff stored my bags before check-in an after check-out, which was handy. Location is great for public transport but neighbourhood isn't the best. Overall an excellent way of staying in Manhattan without paying an arm and a leg.
