DoubleTree by Hilton New York Midtown Fifth Ave enjoys a central location that garners appreciation from guests keen on exploring NYC's attractions. However, the hotel's atmosphere and amenities struggle to impress, with some visitors comparing it unfavorably to less expensive options and pointing out the lack of charm and basic comforts. While the rooms are acknowledged for their cleanliness, they are also often described as cramped and inconsistently furnished. In terms of service, guest experiences vary, with some praising the staff's friendliness and others lamenting poor service and value for money.

The front desk was really nice. I did arrive early coming from another hotel. The rooms were ok. The elevators are scary. Breakfast is normal. This is an ok hotel adjacent to Rockefeller Center with a Walgreens next door. It needs some work, coming into the Hilton fold recently. But not a bad, cheaper alternative.

Location of the hotel is prefect, all Christmas attractions within walking distance. The staff are all polite especially the concierge took time to ask about your day and provide tips and tricks to make our day exploring easier. If I could sum the hotel up in 1 word it would be, tight. Tight reception area and tight rooms. The rooms are dark due to very poor lighting. However, the shower was modern and the beds were comfortable. I would return to this hotel, especially for the free warm hotel cookies which were delicious!

Great location but hotel was disappointing and not up to Hilton standards - toilet does not flush properly, one of the elevators is broken and there are long waits. Room is small with no space for luggage. They have a leased restaurant which is expensive and no buffet. Front desk workers are often not present and are not helpful. Anyone can access rooms. You do not have to use your key to access rooms.

My wife and I stayed here for my birthday weekend in New York City. The location is great for seeing Rockefeller Center right outside the door along with NBC Studios, Top of The Rock, FAO Schwarz and Radio City Music Hall! We have stayed at many other Doubletree Hotels around the country and we are always greeted with nice and warm chocolate chip cookies at check in. When I asked for a cookie when we checked in I was told that they did not have any at that time. I asked again the next day and they said they still hadn't gotten a delivery and I asked the third day that we were there and they still hadn't gotten any cookies. I figure if there is something that your hotel is known for that is related to guest hospitality that after three days you should be able to find a way to make things work for your guests. The Chips Ahoy bag that I saw behind the counter was not the length that I hope they were desperate enough to try to go to. We stayed in a Queen bed size room and it was nice that there were not too many rooms on each floor. Our room was small and quaint but it had everything that we needed. I asked for the cleaning staff to visit our room once we left for the day and our room had been cleaned along with a linen refresh before we returned. All in all I would say that we had a nice stay but I was still a little surprised that the check in staff was not able to be a little more accommodating for their guests.

Stayed here with a tour group the second weekend of December. The city was packed and the hotel was a popular location due to its great proximity to so many NYC attractions. Highly recommend for the location! The restaurant was good, but very expensive. Rooms are tiny and so is the lobby, but it’s New York! Elevators were pretty slow, but I was thankful they worked! I did take the stairs a few times since I was on the third floor. The Duane Read (Walgreens) next door was great for snacks, bottled water, etc. I would stay here again for the value and location.

Absolutely awful. Location is the ONLY good thing about this hotel. Customer service is abominable. We waited for about 30 minutes for someone to show up so we could claim our luggage. The front desk continued to check people in and check their luggage in, but continued to tell us there is a specific lady that handles luggage (security lady wearing a white shirt supposedly). After about 30-35 minutes someone finally showed up (NOT the lady we were told to wait for, but another staff member). We handed her our 6 luggage tickets and waited another 15-20 minutes for her to return with our luggage, mixed with other parties luggage. At this point we were going to miss our flight so as soon as she gave us our belongings we had to leave immediately to get to the airport. Upon getting to the airport we realize one of our bags was missing (we did remit our ticket for this bag to the staff member but did not receive the bag); there was absolutely no way to go back to the hotel. I have now called the hotel 5 times in the past week; I keep getting told a manager will call me. This had yet to happen, not surprised. In addition, the staff members keep telling me that they will not send my bag to me until I PAY FOR SHIPPING. This was their mistake as a result of POOR customer service. The cherry on top is that the bag contains a CPAP machine that my husband NEEDS to breathe at night. I am done. I have escalated this to Hilton. So much for being Diamond honors members and staying loyal to the brand. This hotel is the WORST!!! Also, the elevator takes forever, the lobby smells like cigarettes and marijuana, there is NO loading/unloading zone available because taxis post up in those 2 spots. Standing water in the shower, leaky toilets. Just a subpar hotel all around.

We had an awesome, albeit quite small room with balcony(!) on the 22nd floor. The rooms have been renovated recently. The location is perfect, staff very friendly. I recommend the breakfast at the restaurant on the 7th floor.

I was honestly a little worried staying here based off the reviews but took a chance anyway. We were pleasantly surprised. First of all it’s close to everything for about half the cost as most other nearby hotels. The elevator situation was not bad, they were both working. The only problem was one day when a large group came but we were able to squeeze through them. The bathrooms are accessible that’s why they “leak” into the bathroom. However if you put a few towels down ur fine. The water pressure is a little lighter than we typically like but I’m also sure that helps keep the water not getting as bad. We didn’t go to the restaurant upstairs since there are so many other places to eat. The front desk staff was nice as well. They even offered a free late checkout (this is based on availability so may not always be available). The beds and pillows were comfortable. The only real issue we had was one day we left the window open (we get warm easily and like the breeze) and came back to it not only closed but the housekeeper set it to 90 freaking degrees. Also u have zero view if ur facing a back wall, u get a few of people in the office building behind us working, but that’s it. Really no serious complaints and I’d stay there again. I wouldn’t suggest taking a cab using their curb service though, we could have caught a regular one in less time and for less money, but lesson learned there, pretty sure that’s of no fault to the hotel.

If only I had read the reviews before booking!! I incorrectly assumed that all Doubletree Hotels had the same quality standards. It is clear this hotel relies on business exclusively due to its prime location, rather than repeat guests or word-of-mouth. The shower head sprayed water all over the bathroom. The channel guide didn’t match the actual channels, so you had to slowly scroll through each channel to find the station you wanted. The elevators were unreasonably slow. More than once I had to squeeze up against the wall because guests had to share the elevators with housekeeping carts and maintenance. I was there three days and they never had cookies available. The front desk attitude was indifference and nonchalance. The quality of service didn’t measure up to the price tag at all. Never again.

I would not stay here if it was free. This hotel is not safe or clean. We are Diamond member that stays in Hiltons all over the world. The stay here was terrible. The manager should be fired. The basic requirements of a hotel are security and cleanliness. I attached a photo of the door frame. The door would not close all the way. The entire door lock striker plate was gone. You had to slam the door shut and the door would still not seat correctly. To exacerbate this issue, we were put on the 7th floor, the same floor as the restaurant. Throughout the day and night staff and customers would come through the hallway. We had a restaurant customer knock on our door looking for the restroom. At one point a contractor knocked on the door looking to repair the television, which we never requested. Another night I woke up after midnight having “cotton mouth”. This was due to the excessive marijuana that was being smoked on the floor. The next morning the adjacent room acknowledged that they had the same issue and said it was not them. A photo of the fire door that was directly outside of our room that was not secured, next to the elevator, where anyone from the street could just enter the floor. It was open and closed all the time making it impossible to sleep. Photo attached. The cleanliness was atrocious. We had a sleeper for our 12 year old daughter. We called down for two hours trying to get bedding. Finally, someone from the front desk came up with bedding but no pillows, as they were out. When we opened the hide-a-bed, it had old sheets, used towels and Kleenex on the mattress. At no point did housekeeping make any attempt to clean the sofa. We literally took all the used bedding and threw it in the hallway. On top of these two significant issues, here are some of the other issues we had. The last night it rained hard. I could hear water dripping and sure enough the ceiling in the closet /storage area had water coming down. I attached a photo. Fortunately, I heard this at 4:00 in the morning and was able to move the suitcase and clothing away before they were damaged. The toilet stopped up and maintenance had to come up. At least that was quick. Lastly the elevator situation is as every other review state, it is unnecessary slow. There is no freight or employee elevator. When employees need to go from one floor to another, they use the same elevator as the guest. After waiting 20 minutes for the elevator, it is always full, including workers and contractors. Multiple times the employees would go from one floor to just one floor above or below with nothing in their hands when they could simply take the stairs. We saw one guest fall up the stairs after they gave up waiting for the elevators. We had other issues but you get the point, the manager clearly is incompetent. They should not be in hotel management. It is only a matter of time before a guest is seriously hurt or ill at this hotel.

Russp302, it's evident your stay didn't meet your expectations nor match the usual standards guests have come to know us for. We deeply regret the concerns you raised about security and sanitation, and we assure you these aspects are typically our top priorities. Addressing the issue related to your room door and the lock, we understand this might have greatly impacted your sense of safety. Also, location close to the restaurant area should typically enhance the experience, but we see it has resulted in unintentional disturbances in your case. Exposure to uncomfortable smoke smells rank highly amongst concerns, and we see yours was no exception. Understandably, this would mar anyone's stay and we empathize with you. Also, cleanliness is of utmost importance for us and hearing your remarks about the sleeper sofa is deeply concerning. It's unfortunate you experienced such delays and discomfort regarding the bedding. It's also distressing to learn about the leak in your room and the inconvenience caused by the toilet issue. Further, your comments about our elevator services highlight a critical area for improvement, and we assure you this is being duly noted. Guaranteeing the safety and wellness of our guests is a priority and feedback such as yours guides us in creating safer conditions. We understand your dissatisfaction with the management and appreciate your candid feedback. Your concerns have been forwarded to the relevant departments for immediate review and action. We sincerely hope you will reconsider and allow us another chance to serve you better.
