Don't be misled -- this is a SRO (look that up and run away) flop house for near homeless folk, with ONE TINY (even by NYC standards, I mean 4 feet by 4 feet ) elevator for FIFTEEN HUGE FLOORS, that will hit you with its no-pun intended bummed-out vibe the second you walk in the musty, moldy, dingy lobby....

I used to LIVE here when it was a residence hotel in the '70s and see that it is a hostel now. The pipes clang, the plumbing is Olde New York, but it is an experience from yesteryear. In this time of skyrocketing prices for lodging it is good to know there is a nook left for a slender wallet.

Good neighborhood, subway and crosstown bus next block, supermarket and good restaurants nearby. The first time I was there it was in 1993 and then I choosed Dexter as my place to stay in NYC three more times since, in the years of 1994, 2007 and 2010. It's how I told, I simply like the place.

I would say it's worth the money you pay for it. The room was ok, clear, but a bit dark. It's close to the underground station which is obviously a good thing. The room service was acceptable. If you need wi-fi access, you have to ask for it at the reception. They will give you the password for free.

If all your after is a roof over your head, a bed and simple amenities this is the place for you. Especially if you only want to go and explore beautiful New York City. No problems, as we were out all day and just wanted to crash and go to bed at night.

My partner and I stayed in this hotel over xmas and new years of 2009/10. I knew that i was not going to be staying in a luxury place, im not stupid, it was very cheap! however i was expecting a no frills, clean hotel that would do us for our low budget trip. This place was an absolute disaster!...

This is THE WORST HOTEL I have EVER stayed at. Noisy, unfriendly staff, roaches in the kitchen and I had a mouse in my room one night. The only saving grace is the location

So, Going in, we expected the worst, in fact we would fall asleep to reading the reviews from this website on the days leading up to our stay at dexter. We had booked to stay there over new years 2011, and became worried at the shocking reviews the place was getting on this website. I hope to give an honest...

This hostel was perfectly situated but the staff was horrible. You couldn't ask a question, the guy was not nice at all. I had a noisy room, it's like with had the factory in our room ! Anyway, great location close to the subway and the park.
