Like another poster, I read the reviews and thought okay some good some bad, I'll give it a go. The building is really old and god love them, they do their best to clean it, but it really is awful. The first night or so was ok, but then we started to meet the cockroaches. They were everywhere. I came... More

I read all the reviews before booking this hostel. Some were good and some bad, so I thought: "OK I will take a chance, specially because it is so cheap". The thing is that there should not be any discussion... here's the truth. THE PLACE SUCKS. The carpet's dirty, the rooms are so very small (smaller than any other hostel... More

This is a former rooming house revamped as an international hostel. Although it is somewhat run-down phyiscally, it is a suitable place for visitors looking for cheap, well-located accomodations with a friendly atmosphere. American travelers from the suburbs used to staying at Day's Inn will likely find themselves uncomfortable here. The room I stayed in was quite basic; small, with... More

I stayed at this hostel for 5 nights with my 16 yr old sister and my mom. I have stayed in hundreds of hostels around the world, but it was a first for them. The location of this place is great. The neighbourhood was great. We always felt safe walking around. The subway station is only about 3 blocks away.... More

After reading some reviews here, i was very worried about staying there. But when we got there we had a pleasent surprise! Of course it's not a hotel, but I thought very nice place. The location is great. There are a lot of good places in a walking distance, and it's a very safe neighbourhood We stayed in a double... More

We went here with some pretty low expectations after reading other reviews but wanted a cheap place to stay in Manhattan. On the plus side: nice neighbourhood (not too touristy, get to hang out with New Yorkers at local restaurants which have much better prices than in some of the more tourist areas) where we felt quite safe walking at... If you love rats, roaches, and long term residents on the brink of death, then this place is for you. My friends and I stayed in rooms the size of closets and spent sleepless nights afraid of vermin attacks. (Yes, I captured a roach in a bag and removed it from my room; my friend had a rat crawl up... More

I just came back from 4 days at the American Dream Hostel, and I'm writing mostly in response to the critical comments - it's not a squalid flophouse, believe me, I've seen some... It's pretty much what I expected - old building, not terribly well maintained, small rooms. But the rooms were larger than the Y I stayed at the... More

I read other peoples ratings of this hostel and wonder what they expected for such a cheap rate!!! We didn't expect hotel quality and neither should anyone else for the price. But - it's central, easy to get to by subway, bathrooms are clean, you get a really decent choice of breakfast (which is free) and the staff were friendly.... More

This place has some long-time permanent residents who turn it into a sad half-way house with their crusty and depressing presence. They sit at the table during the breakfast buffet and ruin the mood, they smoke in their rooms and talk in the hallways at night, they resent you for being there. Ugh. This place is the worst I've EVER... More
