Property: Good location, safe neighborhood, some corner marts nearby. Subway stop is 2 blocks away. Front desk agents are not too big on customer service but whatever. They let me check in early (12pm) which was nice.
Room: I booked a single bed and the room I got was not much beyond that. Which is fine - I only stayed one night and for 81 bucks, I'm not expecting a suite. All necessities were included though (hangers but no closet, bedside table, dresser, coffeemaker, TV, chair). If you have luggage bigger than a duffel bag, there is no room to prop it open.
The bathroom is Euro-sized (read: compact and modern) but very clean. Again, necessities included blow dryer, Herbal Essences amenities, lots of towels, 2 mirrors, decent water pressure in shower. The layout will be cramped for a hefty person but doable for average/skinny people. The tiny sink is the only negative.
Noise: Probably the worst category - the doors are paper-thin. I could hear the maids' conversation in the hallway without straining! Try to get a room at the end of the hallway to minimize passing noises.
Misc: Breakfast included - nothing to write home about but it's free which is always a good thing. Bed is on the soft side and decor is worn (but who cares?). Street parking is decent but ideal for weekends, not weekdays.
Overall, this is one of the best deals around Manhattan for a cheap, sub-$100/nt hotel that isn't a deathtrap. If prices stayed low, I would definitely stay here again.
The neighborhood is great and convenient to all of NYC (almost smack dab in the middle of things). There is a subway station about a block away (I believe for the number 6 train, going uptown and downtown.)
Bottom line is that I will definitely stay here on my next trip and have no qualms about recommending it to anyone else. Our rooms were $179 (weeknight) and $197 (weekend), which is quite reasonable for a convenient, safe, clean room in the city. I have stayed many other places here, and dollar for dollar, this is among the best in value.
Pros: if you are not planning on being in the room much, the price is a bargain. the daily maid service was excellent. in general, the staff was friendly and helpful. it's in a good location, within walking distance of many good stores/bars/restaurants. there is a subway stop one block from the hotel, and it's easy to find cabs.
Cons: the rooms are TINY (though that seems to be the case in all of NY). the comforter and shams smelled like mold, and the wallpaper is peeling. no room service or restaurant. the free continental breakfast was pretty poor. it's a challenge learning to control the temperature in the rooms, as there is a radiator and a fan, no thermostat.
Its not a guest driven hotel -its a welfare hotel. I want everyone to have a home- but this isnt a home... its a pretty small room in midtown Manhattan.
I have stayed at this hotel many times. It has gone way downhill. I can overlook draws that do not stay closed, the occasional hair in the linen and a bathroom door that does not fully close. some of these are routine maintenance items that can be overlooked by staff if not reported by guests.
The last few times I have stayed at this Clarion I have noticed that the hotel appears to be a site contracted to house homeless families. The room I had on my last stay was located directly across the hall from a room that was set up as a 24/7 operations office handing out milk and toiletries, with families lining up for distribution of same. The door of this office slammed open and shut all hours of the night. Two weeks ago during another stay there was a domestic dispute with a father dropping a baby, an incident to which police were called. In light of the recent multiple murders at a similar facility on Staten Island ,NY where homeless families were also being housed, it is unfathomable that Clarion would choose not to advise guests of these developments and the inherent potential for problematic issues.
There was a bit of noise from passers by in the hallway so I agree with a prior posting about an end of hall room. No street noise at all. We had a chair, desk and closet. The TV was wall mounted. My brother's room had a larger TV in an armoire. But his room was located at the fire escape, which I wouldn't have liked, especially with having the window open!
Bed on the soft side but comfy, bathroom clean, water hot. We didn't use the in room coffee maker because the breakfast downstairs offered coffee, tea, hot chocolate, oj, fresh bananas and oranges, cereal, bagels and other (packaged) cakes. We were there for the 2 foot blizzard and this was helpful!
They allowed us to check in early, and the staff tried to help us get a cab. None to be found with all the snow but the proximity of the subway station was a blessing.
I would stay again, although I'd like to pay a bit less! My sister stayed at a different hotel near Times Square, paid $30 + more for the night and got the tiniest room I've ever seen! Here, not only the hallways were tiny, but so was the elevator! But the room was fine!
"The single bed room is very small, but clean with a comfortable bed. Perfectly adequate for a solo traveler."Read full review
