The location of this hostel is good and despite the unusual layout (no ceiling) we figured it would be an interesting experience to stay here. The bed was comfy and the shower was hot. But that is the end of the positive feedback. The place is lifeless, the girl who checked us in was miserable and didn’t even raise a smile which wasn’t a great start. This aside we went to our cabins and settled down for the night. The following morning I went to the female bathroom to find only one toilet for the entire floor along with one shower. The second shower is broken because the roof has fallen in but it would appear no one has bothered to do anything about it. That being said, the one shower was hot and powerful. Don’t expect any privacy at all as the shower and toilet is in the same tiny, soaking wet room. The place is noisy which was expected but it’s just a place to sleep and with the ear plugs we managed ok. Then we found the bed bugs. My sister first and then me. Considering the number of previous reviews mentioning bed bugs I can’t believe the hostel hasn’t done nothing about it. It would appear that basic hygiene is completely disregarded by the owner/management of this place. Yes it is cheap considering the area but come on, everything else I can deal with but bed bugs is just disgraceful. When I complained I was moved rooms but I am concerned by the fact that people are raising this issue and it’s being ignored. My sister was moved rooms as well however the following morning I discovered more bed bugs in the new cabin. We immediately checked out and found a new place nearby. I’ve never ever experienced bed bugs before and have stayed in much cheaper hostels. Bed bugs aren’t due to unclean bedding, they bury in to the mattress which shows how neglected this issue is. I wouldn’t recommend this place for that reason. It may be cheap for the area but seriously, spend a little more to not have to share your bed with disgusting bugs. I honestly question the hygiene of those who have found the place acceptable. When we told the staff, they weren’t at all surprised and immediately offered a refund. The first occasion they offered a two night refund but when we checked out due to finding more bugs they said they would refund the whole stay (4 nights) and would process it immediately. However this did not happen and my sister has had to chase them many times for our money back, which still hasn’t arrived over a month later. Complete lack of customer service. Absolute joke! I can not express enough... DON’T STAY HERE, ITS GROSS!!

Disclaimer: I am a type of traveler who is very patient and I can adjust to every circumstances. I am not the complainer type but the one who sees beauty in everything. To sum it up, imma cowboy. Also, this is based on my experience. Some people may have a different one. Pros: 1.) Value: I stayed at a original cabin, space is okay with me. if you don't prefer small space then get a larger one. Cheapest in Central Manhattan, even beat AirBnB prices. 2.) Location: Unbeatable with respect to price. It is literally at the center of Manhattan. Near the landmarks, near the metro stations if you don't wanna walk. 3.) Safe: Place is safe. 4.) Kind Staff: They attend to your needs efficiently. 5.) Free breakfast: free bagels, coffee, fruits, and juice from 6-9am. 6.) There's a Wholefood Market 1.5 blocks away: If you fancy healthy food and stuffs and don't wanna eat at a resto. You'd save much. 7.) Clean bathrooms, free toiletries that never runs out. Cons: 1.) No Elevator: Not for PWDs 2.) Room Space is very small: But I tried to be creative with the place so I get to fit my big luggage, small luggage, stuffs that I bought, food, etc. 3.) Noise due to No Ceiling: if you are really a noise-sensitive person, then find another one. Because of a shared airspace with all the other people on the floor, you could hear everything. My solution: I am a fan of noise cancelling headphones by Bose. It literally shut down all the noises (farts, sneezes, snores, people coming in and out, etc) 4.) Some people reported bedbugs: I actually read the reviews about bedbugs after booking it. So I brought a tea tree oil and sprayed it all heavily on the bed and all over the place. Thank God I didn't experience a single bite though. I don't know if it is the tea tree oil or if there is really no bedbugs in my assigned room. Overall: I'd return here if I am on a tight budget.

I read terrible reviews but thankfully after my stay. I’m super picky and this place definitely met my minimum standards. Location and price are absolutely unbeatable, since you won’t be able to find anything below $150 per night in Manhattan. In my case, location was key because I didn’t want to use the train. Bowery is located at the heart of SoHo and you can literally walk anywhere! The staff was young & cool. If you wake up early enough, there is coffee and courtesy bagels. The lobby is quite cozy! The rooms are “private” cabines/cubicles divided inside a big room. However, if you’re a light sleeper this is a strong no for you. The room has no ceiling, which obviously comes with no noise isolation. The first night I had trouble sleeping, since someone snored so loudly and another person coughed a lot. You can also hear when someone comes in or out of their room, bathroom etc. To be honest, I would come back to the hostel until the end of the day and so tired every night, that other than the first night, I could sleep perfectly fine even with the background noise. The bathrooms are clean and never crowded, which made the stay acceptable. There’s a cleaning lady 24/7 who makes sure the common areas are “decently” clean. You can’t bring anything bigger than a carry-on because it won’t fit inside the room. So, I wouldn’t recommend to stay there for more than 4 nights. People who stay here are mostly solo travelers from all over the world. In my experience, guests where very respectful and quiet. If you’re a laid back type, on a budget, but want to stay at a great location in Manhattan, I strongly recommend this hostel as long as you’re not picky or a light sleeper!

It’s a shame we had such a bad experience as the staff were really lovely. The complex would be fine other than the fact we got bed bugs. The staff did refund us our entire payment. Wouldn’t stay there again but it’s what you get for what you pay.

Had an amazing stay. The people working there were super open and kind. Other people might be noisy when you’re sleeping, but the house gives you earplugs. Quiet room is absolutely amazing. Best playlist ever. Super good vibes.
