I stayed here recently while in town, and while I was initially very cautious about staying in a hotel during the pandemic, the hotel had a very detailed COVID plan on their website, so we decided to give them a try. In general, the ALOFT chain is very good - I've stayed in their locations in other cities - so I was assured by their overall quality of service. The staff were very welcoming and pleasant, and they checked us in with no problems. The lobby was designed in the modern style, with exposed piping and hip furniture, but it added to the overall style. The rooms were similarly designed and very comfortable, with great beds and spacious bathrooms. This hotel is pretty close to a lot of things in the area, such as subway lines, Central Park, Columbia University, and plenty of restaurants. Nothing in NYC is absolutely quiet, but the rooms do a pretty good job of providing a break from the activities on the street. I did see people walking around in the lobby without masks, and staff were quick to ask guests to put their masks back on.

Was not following local Coronavirus laws, no masks indoors in public spaces such as lobby. I asked front desk about it but rather than try to enforce it, the woman at the front desk cheered on some hoodlums in the lobby who said they’d beat me up if it was enforced. Luckily the manager came out from all their hollering. It was very unsafe, I checked out early. It seems to have gone the way several other hotels on the west side have reportedly gone. It’s a shame - I’ve lived a few blocks away for 14 years, which is why I stayed here when my apartment was flooded by above neighbors. It’s a good area. This hotel and it’s law-breaking guests are not the norm for the area.

So technically this is a 3.5 star hotel. It’s not a Four Seasons or a Waldorf hotel. But I’m giving this place five stars. First of all, the staff is fun, kind, and accommodating. I’ve stayed here three times now, and checking in today, they knew my name as soon as I walked in the door. I work nights when I’m in NYC, and they’ve always accommodated me with a quiet room off the main hall. This time they gave me a corner room with huge windows and tons of light (note that courtyard rooms are quieter). The rooms aren’t fancy, but they are clean and have good heating and air, and the beds are pretty comfy. There aren’t any drawers for clothing, but the modern closet space is plenty for me. Housekeeping is always nice and thorough. They have a neat lobby with artwork from local artists and modern music playing. There is normally a bar and breakfast served, but not right now during COVID 19. It’s also in the vibrant Harlem neighborhood and is about half a mile from a subway train that can get you anywhere. This was booked for business, but I would stay here on personal stays too. Again, kudos to the staff—so warm and welcoming, better than so many luxury hotels in which I’ve stayed!

The Aloft Harlem is a great trendy boutique hotel. The staff was awesome- extremely helpful, professional, and personable. The front desk staff offered great suggestions for dining, entertainment, and even tips on how to navigate the city. My daughter will be attending Columbia University Teachers College in the fall, so we wanted a location within walking distance to the university. The walk to campus is about 12 minutes. The hotel is very clean and we would not hesitate to stay again!
