Sanctuary NYC is an unusual hotel. The rooms are modern NYC apartments decorated in a subdued and Eastern aesthetic. I stayed in the Buddah room which was a studio apartment. I felt like I was in a nice, relaxed, warm apartment more than a standard, clinical hotel room and that was a real bonus. The wood floors, kitchen, large bathroom,... More

Really relaxed place in a great part of the city. Basically it's a yoga studio with some apartments upstairs. We travelled with two boys aged 5 and 9 who had to share a make up bed and I guess they could have done with a slightly bigger one but apart form that the room was really comfortable and practical with... Nice place, great service and as above it's located in cool location in an up and coming funky area with lots of awesome food locations nearby. The area has all sorts from homeless through to very wealthy and it works well - still a little raw but has some awesome street art, great architecture and love the community gardens. Ok... More

Hi! Thanks for the great review and the useful feedback. Yes, the Lower East Side is definitely more representative of what New York City with natives, locals, tourists and a touch or two of gentrification and its upscale bars and restaurants. Thanks again for staying with us and hopefully we'll see you again soon. Namaste! More

Booked three weeks before travelling, due to our other accomodation being cancelled (AirBnB) we took a punt on this place. From the start communication with staff was friendly and welcoming. We were three in a room - sister and I sharing the double and my teenage daugter in a roll out bed. But we never felt cramped. We also had... More

Sanctuary NYC Retreats is a great place to stay if you're looking for an alternative to a hotel (especially if you are a yoga fan). It feels more like an apartment than a hotel which is great for someone like me who likes to be independent. The staff are all lovely and very helpful. My room was spacious and had... More

Other than my shock for being hit with a hefty overcharge on top of the fairly reasonable price at a travel website, I found the rooms very comfortable and meticulously equipped. Unfortunately I didn't have time to take advantage of the Yoga classes offered, nor the breakfast, which seemed nice.

So pleased I stumbled across this place to plan out 10 day stay in NYC. We travelled as a couple and a single. This was a very affordable 2 bedroom very large apartment in Lower East. Huge balcony which was great to spend time outside. Continental complimentary breakfast served by lovely staff and Zac and Mario in the office made... More

We stayed in New York for 9 days, at the Sanctuary Retreat on Stanton Street, Lower East side of Manhattan. The room - very good. The neighbourhood- quiet. Zack was very helpful upon arrival. The only problems: Poor wifi - kept dropping out. The TV - mostly unwatchable: colour all out of shape and distorted. The colours almost appeared to... More

We stayed for 5 nights in December and paid really reasonable prices. The room was clean and more than adequate for our needs. Where to stay in New York? So much to choose from and much of it really overpriced. Booking about 6 months out, we spent 9 nights at Sanctuary NYC at a pretty good price. Located in the East Village, the Sanctuary is about 10 mins walk from the Essex St subway station. From there it is about 15 minutes to... More

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighborhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Sanctuary NYC Retreats was established by a group of health, eco, and spiritually conscientious travelers. They came together with two ideas in mind: To provide other travelers with a peaceful, retreat-like stay in NYC and to create an opportunity to give back to our community. Each suite at Sanctuary features a fully equipped kitchen and a flat-screen cable TV. The suites are decorated in warm colors and Indian folk art. Select rooms have a sofa bed and private patio. Complimentary continental breakfast is offered Monday-Friday only. The Lower East Side is the oldest neighborhood in New York City and presently one of the most fashionable in Manhattan. Once the home for working-class European immigrants, the LES has become one of the trendiest areas in the city full of cool boutique hotels, bars, restaurants, yoga studios, fashion stores, health food stores, art galleries and live music venues. Iconic artists like Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen used to live on our street and countless movies and TV shows are filmed around throughout the year. Just blocks away is the Delancey/Essex Subway Station and a quick train ride to Midtown (Union Square, Flatiron District, Empire State Building, Times Square and Central Park) or Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO). A few minutes walking and you can be anywhere Downtown: East Village, SoHo, West Village, Little Italy, Chinatown and East River Park. ... more   less
