Like many of you, we are continually disappointed what it costs us to receive our 'free' airline (A/C) points tickets. So...we rebelled....instead of two round trip tickets to/from Ottawa/NYC, we drove to Syracuse, stayed one night at the Knights Inn (modest, but clean and comfortable with a breakfast that was quite nice), the next morning we drove about a mile to the train station, parked our car and took Amtrak to Central Station in NYC. About an 8 hr trip along the Hudson river....lovely scenery and quaint, upscale towns along the way. We returned the same route. When we added up our costs, the total round trip (hotel, gas Ottawa/Syracuse/Ottawa, train tickets and parking) equalled the taxes and fees on our two 'free' tickets....$300...but...we got a lovely trip out of our $300 expenditure and saw wonderful sights and had much less stress than flying and navigating the Ottawa and NYC airport, as well as the NYC taxi ride....we actually saved some $ while having a much better experience. We are retired so the extra time didn't affect us...well,,,yes it did,,,,postively!! NYC is a MUST to visit...its a whole other world.....Central Park at night is beautiful and safe (stay on the paths), the High Line is an esquisite tribute to creative urban planning and recycling space, the Met forever satisfies your artistic needs, reasonable priced restaurants with excellent food are plentiful (just stay west of Broadway and east of 5th Ave), try the many Delis (Zabars Katz, etc), and since NYC is a city of villages, explorethe Upper and Lower East/WQest sides of the city for local restaurants (one example is Finigan's Wake in the Upper West side), and, although pricey, blow the budget and have brunch (jacket and tie at about $100 each) at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Centre- its a throw-back to the 1920's opulance!! Above all...walk and walk and walk and take the subway (which is clean and safe)...and...talk to the people....New Yorkers are generally very friendly and helpful.....stand on the street with a map and three peoplke will ask "can I help you??" Of course, like any large city, Be Smart, and take care of yourself in common sense practical ways, but reach out and enjoy the place...you will return!! Oh yes, if its your first trip to NYC and you want to orient yourself, the first day take the "Hop-on Hop-off" bus...a good deal and you can figure out you plans in leisure.

We love coming to NYC. I want everyone to know, I have never had an unpleasant experience. This is an example. We needed to get to SOHO for a reservation we had. We asked a young man which subway line was the best to take for our address. He actually said, "follow me" and went out of his way to walk us to the correct one. Similar instances have happened over the 35 years I have visited this great giving city. I can go on and on, but remember, you get what you give. Be polite and respectful. The rewards are great.
