Voco Times Square South New York, an IHG Hotel, garners praise for its cleanliness and modern aesthetic, with many guests appreciating the spotless rooms and inviting atmosphere. While the hotel's location is frequently highlighted as central and convenient, opinions on the service and room comfort are mixed; some commend the staff's friendliness and the contemporary updates, others have encountered rudeness and issues with the AC. Amenities like free water refill stations are popular, but the value for money is debated among travelers.

Hotel's Favorite
Short version - there’s no catch! It’s genuinely great. I would not hesitate to stay here again and would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone staying in NYC.

Long version:
I have sleep issues so I am extremely picky with my hotels, but I’m also on a budget, so I went through the entire Expedia. Going through literally hundreds of hotels, I narrowed it down to about 30 that I then went to check Tripadvisor reviews for. This hotel was definitely on the cheaper end, and also the only one that didn’t have the prices fluctuate in hundreds daily, and the one that wasn’t sold out the day before unlike many others, but the reviews were good and I always think it a good sign if the business responds to reviews, particularly if they don’t seem to be the same copy-paste word for word. I really thought there had to be a catch, but I can’t fault it.

As a first time tourist, this LOCATION was pretty perfect. Walkable to most central tourist attractions, and we even walked all the way to Central Park. It’s close to Penn station, so most trains and Subways will pass the area. The 8th is a busy and lit enough street, so we felt fine to walk home in the dark. Yes, there is some homelessness around, but it’s post-Covid New York, you’re going to get that most places. We didn’t see any homeless people on the actual hotel street, which was pretty quiet in general. The doors to need a key card after hours and there’s usually someone from the hotel in the lobby. Loads of little shops, 7/11s, delis, coffee shops etc. nearby, some are even open 24/7. If you venture more into the 30s or 9th, you’ll get better prices, though the options may not be quite as nice.

The HOTEL itself is not the largest or the tallest, but makes good use of the space it has. Everything was clean and modern and totally up to European standards. There’s a few small touches such as chocolate upon check in and popcorn in the lobby during checkout time, which are certainly not essential, but make it feel homely. For anyone interested, they do hold luggage after check out. There’s a bar, a snack aisle and they also offer breakfast from a billable menu as well. There’s also a gym that we did not check out. I really don’t understand the American love for ice, but that’s also available.

I read a lot of complaints about the LIFTS in NYC - I will say that it almost always stopped at least twice on our way down from 25th, but we never had an issue having to wait for it for more than a minute, and only once did we someone other than a cleaner having to wait for another.

We did pay extra for a premium ROOM, so I’m not sure if those were somehow bigger or not, but it was definitely on a higher floor (26 floors altogether). We had a room in the back which didn’t offer much of a view, but was quiet enough for New York, though obviously some noise does carry. Tons of sockets, USB and otherwise which seemed to be fast-charge, and here's also a safe and a TV, but we used neither. The (double double) room wasn’t large, but I’ve had about the same in most European Hiltons. I can only guess the people complaining are boomers who expect $200 be worth the same as it was in 1980s. The size was perfectly adequate and the bathroom I dare say was on the larger size with a lovely walk in shower and some local Brooklyn toiletries, which were so nice, I considered buying had I seen the brand in a shop.

The only few things we would complain about were:
Not a whole ton of storage space, and there is actually a corner space that is otherwise kind of unusable which could fit one. Secondly, we found the A/Cs a little loud and the bathroom one is 2in1 with the light, so you can't avoid it. That being said the A/C worked well and the hum was consistent and not rhythmical, so it would be bearable to sleep with it on. Windows do also open and you can adjust the A/C yourself between I think 70-80F. I’m not sure we even had neighbours and as I sleep with ANC headphones I can’t adequately comment on the morning noises, though I do think you can hear the cleaners around 9-10am.

SLEEP quality otherwise was great. The bed and the pillows were extremely comfortable, and if I had to describe the mattress I’d say it was a perfect medium between soft and firm.

We stayed for 4 nights, but opted out of room cleaning because I’ve never understood why sheets or towels need to be changed daily. I’m sure boomers would complain about the laundry trolley being outside their door, but we didn’t care. It actually kind of worked out because the only thing we were short on were bin bags, so used paperbags and left those outside the door and those got picked up no problem.

Would 100% recommend.

Room size was as expected for NYC, but still managed to easily fit 3 suitcases in a King Room. Love the hardwood floors and the shower was also nice and spacious. They have daily housekeeping which really helps refresh the room and not have a pile of dirty towels or trash in this small room. Although the view goes into a back alley, the other building is a bit further away, so there is sufficient sunlight coming into the room and also gives a further view when peeking out the window.

Location is very good, being on 36th St when coming from JFK, you can ride the AirTrain to Jamaica and take LIRR to Penn Station. Makes the ride so easy and seamless. Stayed here 4 days and was happy for such a great find.

The hotel and rooms recently completed a major refurbishment; new everything, The size of the rooms are on par for the pricing..,small. Other than the bed, there is only one desk chair as an alternative, For a solo traveler, the size of the room is fine. For a longer stay, it may become a challenge for 2 occupants. A Keurig coffee maker awaits you for early mornings. Other than that, the rooms have mainly what you need but are basic. No mini fridge, no closet (just hooks on wall and open storage). The AC and heat is controlled by you, plus you can use either year round. Apotheke products, supplied by a local Brooklyn company, are provided. However, the one disappointing over site is the missing hair dyer. This is an IHG property in NYC and with the cost of the room, a hair dryer should be included. Even Super 8’s provide one. Wifi worked well, TV has adequate channels, beds/pillows are comfy and AC works. The bar area is bright and fresh. Check in area is small. 10 minute walk to Penn Station. Great place to stay for Broadway or events at MSG.

This hotel is recently rebranded a Voco hotel. We were worried when we saw reviews about the ongoing renovation, but when we arrived we learned that the renovation was already completed. The lobby and bar/lounge area is brand new. The room looks nice, and the decors have a modernism vibe. They also replaced the carpets with wooden floors during the renovation, making the rooms much friendlier to people with allergies. The walls are a bit thin, and we can hear people in the hallway. However, the hotel was really quite at night, so noise wasn’t an issue for us. The location is another plus: it is in walking distance to NY Penn station, K-town, times square, etc. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay! This hotel is truly a hidden gem in the heart of manhattan.

Myself and my family checked in here for a week whilst we visited New York on our holidays. The hotel has been recently refurbished I believe and it was a very elegant and clean, polished hotel. We were a party of 4 and had booked a twin double room, consisting of two double beds. The room was very clean and comfortable but rather small, especially for four people. There was no storage for cases and/or clothes so we did live out of our cases all week. However, the beds were very comfy and the AC/heater was a great addition. We were also on the 20th floor and it was very quiet, we were never disturbed by any outside noise.

The housekeeping team came into the room the day after we checked in and unfortunately did not do so again. On the fifth day of our visit we had to go down to reception with a list of towels, toilet roll and other amenities that were desperately needed and had to ask for them to be sent up, as well as asking them to empty the overflowing bins. The bathroom and floors also got quite messy and dirty as they had not been hoovered or wiped since that first day. This was really poor customer care and we were very disappointed in that aspect.

The staff were generally quite indifferent but on the last day of our stay one of the staff members at reception was very helpful when one of our party had got ill that morning and allowed us to check out a little later. If this hadn't had been the case, the hotel also has a luggage store so you can check out but don't have to lug around your bags if you have a later flight.

The location of the hotel was arguably its best feature, as it was right next to Madison Square Garden and around the corner from the subway, very central. If they can brush up on customer service, particularly around housekeeping, then it would be a great place to stay if you were a party of one or two people.

Stayed in this hotel first week of May with a family of 5 with 2 rooms. This hotel was very disappointing for us, we stay frequently at IHG hotels and this was the worst one we stayed at. What the other reviews are saying staff is not very welcoming up on arrival. Hotel rooms are small but it is New York so that is normal just don't expect a lot of room for you to move in if you are staying with 3 or 4 people in a room. Our bathroom smelled so badly and the cleaners knew it because they left the air extractor fan on all day when we came back from sightseeing all day. The smell was really bad but we just let the bathroom door closed all the time. Sometimes the room was cleaned sometimes not. Also there where hairs in the shower up op arrival. The room was not clean and your feet would be sticky on the floor we bought extra socks and slippers to walk around the floor. Some tv channels work other work not.

My father was working in the hotel lobby at 9PM and a homeless person started bothering him and asking for money. There was no one around and no security my dad gave him some money so he would leave. If as a hotel you know the neighborhood has changed especially after covid then make sure you have security.
Also don't have breakfast here as 1 slice of bread will cost you $5,- We understand New York is expensive as we have been here multiple times but being charged $5- for bread and $10,- for a small cup of yoghurt is just outrageous. We told the manager this was not okay and they cut our bill in half. (Just an indication we were charged $130 for 3 slices of bread, 3 cups of yoghurt, 5 croissants and 3 coffees and 2x scrambled egg)

Also good to keep in mind this has nothing to do with the hotel but this neighborhood has changed after covid. We stayed in this neighborhood multiple times over the several years and there are many homeless people in this area. This can make you feel unsafe when you walk back in the evening. I would recommend picking a hotel in lower Manhattan.

Overall the experience at this hotel was negative and I would choose a different hotel next time. The only positive what I can say was the beds where comfy.

I really enjoyed my stay at this property, in a location I wouldn't normally consider. Times Square lacks charm, but this neighborhood made up for it in convenience. It is a short walk to the theaters and subway stations. I wasn't out crazy late, but walking alone after dark felt safe because 36th Street always had people around.

I will agree with another reviewer that loved the hardwood (laminate?) floors. It feels so much cleaner than carpet. And even though the standard rooms are small, my room with a double bed still had enough floor space to open my large suitcase + carry on when it was time to pack. (The woman checking me in called in a queen bed, and it was not). I thought the bathroom was very spacious with ample storage, but the vent was very loud, and turned on with the light. That would be one of my minor complaints. I had another housekeeping complaint that I brought to the front desk directly, and they addressed it right away.

Because the hotel is new (or recently renovated), the room had plenty of charging stations. Though small, the layout was well thought-out, and made up for the lack of a closet with sturdy hooks by the door, for example. There was a small area to hang clothes with hangers, but no closet. It was also nice to have a Keurig in the room to make coffee and tea.

The eco-friendly features of this hotel were my favorites, including the water filter in the hallway. Aluminum bottles were provided and could be refilled easily. I really enjoyed not having to buy bottled water which isn't that expensive, but wasteful. The bathroom had large pump dispensers for hand soap in addition to the shower pumps. All of these touches make me re-think my loyalty to another hotel group. I'm not sure why I would go back to that older, tired hotel that has been my staple when I could stay here for the same price.

I didn't try any food, but found some gems close by including Vito's Pizza on the corner when I didn't feel like walking to Joe's. And All'Antico Vinaio is a few blocks away. Their sandwiches are worth the hype! There are a few Culture Espressos nearby, and their cookies are better than Levain Bakery's, imo. Oh shoot, this is a hotel review.

I'd definitely stay here again, and would try to get a high floor again because I really enjoyed the view.

We stayed for 7 nights at the VOCO Times Square South and were pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. We checked in late at night and were greeted by Yvette. She is a gem! She was super lively and happy and just a wonderful receptionist for this hotel! She explained everything to us and even gave us chocolate and cookies! Our room was small but we totally expected this being NYc. It had everything we needed and more. We booked a room with 2 double beds and they were super comfortable. Great pillows! People have mentioned stuff about the noise but we had none of that.
We especially loved the decor of the rooms. Looks like they have all been updated to a modern aesthetic and they look fantastic. Hardwood floors which was an awesome thought for a hotel! Every hotel should copy this. They even have large pump containers for shampoo and conditioner , body wash, hand wash and lotion.
The downstairs and lobby have also been updated and it looks fantastic.
We got the option for a free breakfast and it was delicious. You pick from a standard menu of options and every one of the choices were fantastic. The waitress and waiters were so friendly and being served by them started our days out nicely. Huge shout out to Maria, Javier and the restaurant manager Deborah. If anyone is looking for a moderately priced, conveniently located smaller type hotel in midtown give this hotel a try. We will most definitely stay here again.
We checked out at 4am to catch out flight and our stay went full circle cause we got checked out by Yvette! Who was super friendly once again.
I have to mention that during our stay when we were coming and going, we would often run into the staff and most of them remembered us and asked how our day was. It felt like a small B and B.
10/10 for sure!

This is the second time we have stayed here. Both times we have stayed was for concerts at Madison Square Garden. Since the hotel is a very short walking distance, we have made this our go to hotel when we are at the Garden for a night out. As soon as we walk in the door at Voco we feel comfortable. The front desk has always been knowledgeable and helpful with a smile. I was impressed to see the same guy when we checked in both times, and a few months apart. When employees stay, that says alot about an employer. The lobby area is spacious and clean. The lobby bar is trendy with a bartender who is smiling and is happy to be there. The room is clean with complimentary water bottles and a Keurig with Kcups. The bed is seriously the most comfortable we have ever slept in at a hotel. Plenty of towels , liquid soaps and lotions are also available in the bathroom. The hotel has an easy check in and check out policy. I highly recommended this hotel and I know that we will be staying here again.

This location, convenient to Port Authority Bus Terminal and NY Penn Station, is the perfect place to land in midtown coming from JFK, LGA, EWR, Amtrak, and several other transit hubs. It's right near Madison Square Garden, Broadway theaters, Restaurant Row, and all the other Times Square attractions one could think of.

My room was clean and sleek as was the lobby, and Allison at the front desk was friendly and answered all my questions efficiently and clearly. I loved that the bed had 4 pillows, too! And after a night out in Manhattan, the Keurig machine is a nice touch. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
