For an authentic Harlem experience, try Harlem 144 Guest House. It's located in an 1888 townhouse that is on the National Register of Historic Places in Harlem's fashionable Mt. Morris Historic District. Each space is tastefully furnished with eclectic antiques, African, African American and Caribbean art and artifacts. There is a single room with twin bed that sleeps one, a room with queen bed that sleeps up to two and a room with two double beds that sleeps two that share a kitchen and bath. The garden apartment has a private entrance, bath and kitchen and can sleep up to five. Access to a lovely landscaped garden with grills is one of the great amenities offered. Its only 15 min. But quite disappointed at the end.. The house is extremely old, the furniture are ugly and the rooms are so so so small! It is impossible to spend any time in the rooms other than sleeping, there is basically no space other than the bed, not even for a desk with a decent size and a normal chair. Plus, consider that the rooms are on the second floors, and there are only stairs, so the guest house is not accessible to everyone. The most disappointing thing is that the landlady, Valerie, after the first nice impression and the surface smiles, was actually not nice really and not flexible at all. She had very specific times for checking in, and totally not available in meeting my simple request of keeping the luggage at the guest house for just few hours after the check out. She did not even ask me for the hours I needed it and try to see whether there might be some way to coordinate and help me with it. It seems obvious to me that if you want to have a guest house, you should also take into account the necessary time it takes for managing it and taking care of your guests. Given the unavailability of the landlady, and how much old and small is the place, the price is totally unjustified. Still, on the positive side, it seems that the price is better than other options in the area, and at least the room, bathroom and kitchen were clean. The location is also very convenient. Next time I will look for something else though.

We were having a hard time finding anything cheap in NY. There were 5 of us traveling to NY for 4 days and we were looking for something cheaper than renting a couple of rooms at a decent hotel when we bumped into Harlem 144. 5-minute walk from the metro station (Uptown 116 St., lines 2 or 3). Beautiful, quiet street, safe neighborhood. Valerie was patiently waiting for us since we had gotten stuck in traffic coming from Washington DC. We had our own private entrance to our little apartment... Basement apartment, very clean, sleeps 5 comfortably. All necessary equipment in kitchen, bathroom, etc. We even had a yard that we could access! Can't beat this bargain. Highly recommend it!

I've stayed at the guest house twice, once in June of 2013 and June of 2014. Very charming accomadtaions. My travel mates and I shared the third floor which has 3 bedrooms of varying sizes. It kind of feels like staying at yur grandmas house for the summer. /there's a washer and dryer on that floor so we kept our laundry and the towels provided clean. We were shown where the trash was so we took it out as we left. It's pretty much a safe clean place to lay your head and keep your things as you travel around the city. I think we only were there to change clothing and sleep. As much as possible I try to get this place because it is very affordable especially when you're with a group of 3 or more. Ms. Valerie is a cool lady and will give you the info you need to get around. My only issue was them damn creaking steps. It's an older home so it creaks, I felt like a little kid trying to sneak in the house when we came in late. /didn't wanna wake our host. If you ain't too high sadity try 144 out you most likely will like it.

Stayed in a single room. Had a comfy single bed enough room to store case and walk around the bed. Can't expect anymore space than that in nyc, especially for the price. Clean room and bathroom. Breakfast out in the kitchen so was good for me as good grab something quickly as I get up very early. The keeper was very helpful. Close to subway station. Free wifi in room.

I can't review the property because the day before I was scheduled to leave the owner emailed me and told me that I was now staying at another property. While the lady that in charge of the new property was very sweet and helpful, the property itself was not equal in quality to the 144! It also did not provide a breakfast that was supposed to be included. I was very disappointed that I didn't get to stay in the 144 Guest House and I thought that it was very unprofessional to cancel my reservation (which was made months in advance, by the way!) at the last minute and reassign me to another property without my approval.

This place is awesome. I don't give five star reviews but the place and valerie were outstanding. The rooms were so charming and really had a vintage feel. I felt excited to leave and come back. It really felt like a home that I didnt have to clean or decorate. It was extremely clean and the bathroom was goregous. We stayed for four days three nights. Valerie was especially helpful. She went above and beyond to accomodate all of us. I had a party at the house and she was generous in helping us set up and supplying things that we needed. Valerie is an excellent host. She welcoming and warm. I slept very well on the bed. I already booked another date and I know it will be great.

First at all this Harlem Guesthouse is very well located, near the metro that takes you to manhattan center in 5 minutes. The Guesthouse is really nice, a kind of old style wood decoration and the room I was, the cheaper one, was really clean, luminous and with AC and excellent WiFi. Harlem is a great neighborhood to stay, authentic, safe and with lots of street live and jazz concerts. The guys of the Guesthouse took me to an incredible jazz bar one of the nights.....great people both Valerie and her husband! I honestly recommend this place.

I'm a gay male from Indianapolis, Indiana and I visited NYC in June 2013. I decided to stay in Harlem at a beautiful brownstone guest house called 'Harlem 144 Guest House'. I was amazed by the quality of service, the beautiful art and cozy antique furniture. The place was clean, warm and fresh at the same time. The owner of the property was of great help with insight about Harlem and place to go for food and entertainment. I really enjoyed myself and when I come back to NYC I am certainly staying at Harlem 144 Guest House. Baldwin Rivers

The brownstone has that 1800's charm, but all the charm is negated by the laziness and rudeness of the owner, Valerie. My husband and I came with a group and stayed 5 days/ 4 nites. When we arrived, the bathroom & kitchen wastebasket was full and began to overflow until we emptied it. We were offered milk that was dated Jan. '13 & told it was "alright cuz it was frozen". The individual cereal boxes had collected dust, toilet paper was not replenished and as guests, we basically had to perform housekeeping duties that she should hv been responsible for. We were rushed out and "bad-mouthed" when she thought we were all gone. Valerie is a terrible hostess and not worthy of our patronage or anyone elses.

Everything was dirty and so old in this B&B! Valery the owner is very not welcomy and not kind at all. She doesn't know how to smile with her guests. I very disliked this trip due to her behaviour. I do not recommend this hotel!!!!!!!!! And milk and yogourts for our so-called "breakfast" were out of date: dis-gus-ting!!
