There are no frills at Sue's. It is a small, entrance into a common area that has not been updated since the 1970's. It smells like dust and smoke. There is a microwave, bathrooms, refrigerator, and a shower off the common area, as well as four rooms of various sizes. Sue lives up the staircase in a private apartment that guests are not allowed in. As the title suggests, there is no breakfast here, nor food of any kind. There is a coffee maker, but no coffee, no water other than the tap. There are no washing and drying units and no other amenities of any kind. Each room has either one or two beds, and each has a tv. I stayed here for two nights, each night in a different bedroom. My first night, I stayed in the small bedroom nearest to the front door. Due to its size, it was warm, but I imagine the bigger rooms were not so warm. Sue gives you a key when you check in for your individual room, the outside door is left open at all times. The bnb feels generally safe and quiet, but our second night, there was a loud altercation in the main room right outside of our bedroom doors with a very drunk person that started wailing at about 130am and being disruptive. Sue attempted to calm the person but the wailing continued for many minutes. I woke up and felt uneasy, but my traveling companion in a different room did not wake up with the noise. Sue was able to usher the person out and then it was quiet again. Other than the disturbance, I slept well at Sue's, the bed was comfortable. There were clean towels and washclothes and the linens were folded when we arrived. The rooms appeared vacuumed. The location is near the ocean (you cannot see the ocean but can walk there). There is a chinese food restaurant attached to the bnb so food is nearby. Sue herself is friendly, but is strict on her 24 hour cancellation policy, she does not tolerate uncertainty due to weather delays or other incidents. However, if you are firm about what you've paid for, she will work with you to find a solution. This is a very real village experience. If you're looking to be taken care of and want a hotel-like experience, do not stay here. If all you need is a warm bed and shelter, this is a good choice. When we stayed in the winter time, the cost was on the lower side for Kotzebue - $85 a night.
