We stayed here in the large Hogan that was built 100 years ago by the owner's Grandfather. Howard the owner was wonderful and made us feel very welcome and was helpful in answering any questions we had. His dog, Ashkee was an added bonus as he checked us out often at the campsite and hung out with us under the...

Howard was great. We stayed 2 nights, and also used Howard as a guide for our tour of Canyon de Chelly. He had great local knowledge. Primative camping was $10 a night and RV was $16. We had an RV and while there were no hookups available, there was potable water as well as a sewer/septic to dump our black/grey...

My sister and I stayed here for one night on June 17, 2016 (made the reservation in December 2015 by email/check). We got in on the designated evening around dusk and had reserved the medium-sized hogan. Because of the very hot temps and clear skies, we asked if we could instead set up our tent (without the fly) on the...

A recent review from three young ladies who spent two nights here: When looking for campgrounds around Canyon De Chelly, there are two options. Cottonwood looked promising because of location and trees for shade, however, you could not have campfires and it really looked more set up for big RVs. Spider Rock Campground turned out to be absolutely phenomenal!! I...

This review is way past due. I visited last summer (2015). I was just passing through and staying just one night en route to Mesa Verde. Due to car troubles and a super crowded stop at the Grand Canyon, I didn't pull into the campground until 2:00 am. I wasn't sure which Hogan I was supposed to stay in. I...

We made a reservation for the campground before our trip in April, and were very happy with our choice! The campground has lots of shade trees, perfect for a tent. The owner Howard was very friendly, and so was his dog Eshkey. There were only a few other campers, so it was nice and quiet. Enjoyed being close to the...

We arrived at Spider Rock Campground following a downpour that was giving us great trepidation about camping in an unfamiliar place. That is when Howard walked up out of nowhere and told us “The weather Guru’s are predicting this weather to continue till Sunday, but they usually don’t get it right anyway.” Well OF COURSE THEY DON’T!! So we looked...

Howard Smith's campground was comfortable and quiet with decent privacy between sites, a decent outhouse with flush, picnic tables and fire pits where you could have a decent fire. His dog Ashkee a white and tan Navajo dog was friendly and not imposing and was well-behaved. The dog would take a walk to a small rim with you and did...

Basic, primitive, funky, in pretty setting that in the rain becomes a super muddy, slippery mess. Would be best for non-traditional campers, not those used to paved campgrounds with amenities.Husband liked it better than I did but we also were there only in rainstorm which affected our ability to enjoy the setting. Camp dog was adorable however.

It's the only real campground at Canyon de Chelly. The official one (Cottonwood) is just outside the actual park and is near a stream on a field, which means zillions of mosquitoes. It's really pretty disappointing that there is no campground, especially a simple primitive one, on the rim of the canyon. Instead there are lots of hotels outside the...
