Kona Kai San Diego Resort offers a mix of experiences, with guests praising its friendly staff and scenic location by the water, yet some express concerns over service speed and room maintenance. While the resort's amenities, such as the pools and family activities, receive positive remarks, the noise levels and need for room updates are points of contention. Although the atmosphere is often described as cozy and inviting, additional fees and the cleanliness of the rooms have impacted the perceived value for some visitors.

Chose Kona Kai Resort for our milestone anniversary, because of a friend. Let me tell you….

Joseph, Angie & Enrique exemplify service elevation. Right off the back, they knew what to say, did what they have to do and executed for perfection. Bianca, took it to a whole new level of excellence with a handwritten card and amenity.
Housekeeping, Maribel, took care of us all three days we stayed at Kona Kai!
The restaurant (Vessel), Harley & Bailey were an absolute radiance.

I can’t thank you enough Kona Kai for everything you do. Especially with the challenges of staffing. I have so much empathy for all of you but PRAISE all your efforts.

I witnessed, Joseph dealing with a difficult guest at check out. I can’t help but empathize enough for him and his team for taking the beating and then keep a HIGH ENERGY level of professionalism for the rest of us.

I hope this review reaches all those who expect the unexpected to be fixed in an instant! Please be patient! This team at Kona Kai is way too special and is absolutely rooted in “serving the best guest service experience” and being there for guests like US!

A delayed review but we stayed here as a family in July for four days for the last part of our journey down Highway 1 from San Francisco. It was idyllic and very relaxing. We had a ground floor room which was marina facing, harbour facing I think would be noisy as it’s by the car park and also opposite the naval base but can’t confirm that to be the case just my observation. The room and amazing bathroom was spotless and cool in the heat. Attention to detail in the rooms was evident with robes, toiletries and everyday after the room was serviced. It is a little out from the centre of San Diego and we knew this but were not put off as despite some reviews we were convinced we could use taxis. On the first night we still had our hire car so just drove and parked in the Gas Lamp District with no issues and then when we travelled back in again, when we went for another wander and to attend a baseball game (and then again when we went to the airport), we used Uber which cost us around $10-12 one way. There are two swimming pools. One is for everyone the other adults only. The pool bar service was good. Breakfast was ok, the coffee terrible! We went up the road for breakfast on other days. We didn’t eat in at night. We did make use of the fire pits on the mini beach (you can’t swim there) which our children loved. There are smorg kits in the room (at a cost). Would definitely recommend.

Came here in January on New Years day for 2 days with my family. The resort is in a nice location, the lobby was still decorated in it's Christmas theme which was sweet and the lobby itself is nice. Check in was a breeze and the gentleman who helped us was quite personable and fun to chat with. We booked a Marina view double bed room and was put in the renovated building on the second floor. We got a view of the marina but not an unobstructed view, it was a look over the roof of another one of their buildings and off onto the Marina. It was late when we checked in a since we got a renovated room I was not interested in complaining. However, things took a turn for the worse as we realized the walls were metaphorically speaking more like curtains than walls. We heard every conversation being had no matter how low it was and we're not even light sleepers. The breakfast take-out from the restaurant was sad so we ate else where the following day. One thing to note, while we were there some guests did not have masks on inside the lobby and 2 guests walked up to the restaurant (which was inside) with no masks on and placed their order next to us. No one at any point reminded them to please wear their masks indoors. Also, when we checked out we saw two different cleaning people, one in the hallway in front of one room and one in a different room vacuuming and neither of those people had masks on, I'm not talking tucked under their chin, I mean no mask in sight. I'm not fussy about masks but I know for some guests they would appreciate knowing what may or may not be enforced in a particular hotel. Also, for those that pay for a bay view just an FYI because non of the pictures on the website show this, the bay view is onto a parking lot that faces the bay. So yes, you get a bay view but not before seeing your own parking lot. I would recommend asking for rooms in the buildings that are not yet renovated as those have much nicer marina views. It's not a bad hotel and I'm sure precovid it was great and post covid it will be but during covid I wish I would have stayed else where and next time I'll try another spot.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us with this detailed feedback. Although we are happy that your stay was enjoyable, we are disappointed that some aspects fell short of expectations. We will take your comments into consideration as we strive to create unrivaled views and experiences at the Kona Kai Resort. I also am sorry to read about the lack of masks. Our team has very precautionary measures to ensure this is a compliant and safe environment for our staff as well as our visitors. Our guests’ safety is our top priority, and we are so sorry that this event did not live up to our high standards of CDC recommendations. In the future, we hope we will have the opportunity to make up for our shortcomings and provide you with an exceptional vacation in the near future.

I really wanted to like this place but there were too many wonky factors that I could not look past. First, the space in the front is amazing and at first glance so was the room. Modern fixtures and nice aesthetic but that’s where it stopped. The shower didn’t drain, there isn’t complimentary water in the room, toilet made a loud screeching noise that even after two visits from the engineer persisted. Second, I asked for a quiet room as I am a light sleeper. I was given a room right next to the pool which during the day families utilized and in the evening they had social hours with loud music. I was also right by the exit door that made a loud clunking noise when it was opened and closed. Third, I stomped on at least a few silverfish while I was there for a week which made me question the cleanliness of the establishment. Fourth, room service was overpriced and lacked flavor/seasoning. Fifth and the biggest issue for me were the hidden fees of resort and parking. Each were around $40 a day which was ridiculous as it wasn’t mentioned prior to signing in. Overall my stay was underwhelming, uncomfortable and a waste of money. Now that I know better I will be staying somewhere else.

If you haven't been to this resort you are missing out. If you haven't been to this resort in a while, you are missing out!
Full disclosure, I've been in the hotel business my entire professional life, so my expectations are crazy high. But this hotel cleared the bar easily. I called on my friend Jeff Hornick to help me arrange a celebration for my daughters 25th birthday. He responded immediately and my arrangements were made. Thank you, Jeff, you always rock!
On my daughters birthday I called ahead to see if I could access the room early to hang some balloons and a birthday banner. Allysa at the front desk could not have been kinder. She looked up the assigned room, let me know it was available, and invited me to get the key so that my daughter could have a festive welcome.
Everyone else at the resort exhibited the same kindness and courtesy, clearly a culture that is fostered from the very top.
We had a room in the new wing, absolutely gorgeous. With a bathroom featuring a tub that can overlook the view, wonderful furniture and spotlessly clean wood floors, the room exceeded expectations. We had a drink and food at Vessels overlooking the marina and, of course, lounged by both pools.
They have done an excellent job under the difficult covid19 restrictions. Everyone was in a mask, every surface touched was immediately wiped clean and they even moved the work-out equipment outside with enough distance that people can still get in some exercise.
All in all A++. It is a resort worthy or multiple trips from anywhere you may be traveling!

Hi Dreamer, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! Jeff and Alyssa have been with our resort for a number of years and both take a lot of pride in what they do. However, I am even more happy to see that the positive experience didn't stop with the two of them and that you enjoyed the same level of hospitality from all of our team around property. It's also great to see that you enjoyed our new suites. The soaking tubs are very popular with the guests who book these rooms, and the location provides great views of Point Loma and the surrounding bay.

It cannot be argued that this a lovely hotel and the manager did adjust the rate for the kon Kia suite after we spoke , but they could do better job of informing visitors of the new Covid rules . No maid service was offered during our stay and clean towels must be requested daily , guests are responsible for emptying their own trash and room service dishes unless put in the hall did pile up .That being said its a wonderful clean property with much to offer .We find the staff friendly and helpful and they care about your health. Thou this is far from a budget motel considering the view and location a fine value can be had .Room service is very good and the on site restaurant is well above average .These are tough times and exceptions and compromises must be made . PRO tip would be the kona Kia suit is up stairs and has no elevator and hot water seems to take a very long time to reach this oldest part of the hotel .In closing I would stay here again and during normal conditions this certainly a 4 star hotel with much to offer .

Hi Kelly, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are glad that you found our staff friendly and helpful. Our team genuinely cares about our guests and wants everyone to have a great time while they are here. I am however sorry to see that we did miss the mark in a few areas and can assure you that we are constantly changing our procedures to balance the needs of our guests and operating in a post-covid environment. We are shifting to a more proactive approach in delivering basic amenities like towels, coffee, cups, etc and hope to resume some level of routine housekeeping service as soon as possible. Thank you again for taking the time to provide feedback about your visit. We hope to welcome you back some day soon.

We really liked the location of the hotel being right by the water, we wanted to have a few walking options for eating out and this gave us them, however the food in the hotel was really tasty, especially the tacos and we ate there a few nights.
The mini beach to the back of the hotel with fire pits for roasting Marshmallows was a real hit with the kids, lovely way to end the day.
There was a public car park 2 minutes walk down the road from the hotel I would recommend parking there and walking across the street as hotel parking is very expensive.
The hotel was perfectly placed for us to be able to jump in the car and head into San Diego to explore or head out to the Zoo, legoland etc.
Room was a good size for out family of 5.
I would definitely came back!

If boating is an interest, this is a great location. One is able to view naval ships as well as hundreds of yachts, fishing and sailboats docked in the marina. The hotel is furnished with an eclectic retro beach motif that provided a carefree atmosphere. The concierge and staff are accommodating. The rooms are a bit small and the brand of toiletries chosen are not top of the line. Since the hotel does not have an elevator one has to carry luggage up the stairs proving tiresome after a long flight. The major drawback of the resort is also its best selling point, the location. A taxi or Uber is required to access other points of interest or dining. However, the opportunity to see the Nimitz aircraft carrier come to port out your window negated the obstacles.

Overall very positive experience. Was looking for a relaxing warm weather vacation and thats we got.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. The waitress at the pool kept the delicious margaritas coming and the chicken fingers hit the spot.

The location is really great with water on both sides. There's plenty of restaurants within walking distance (Mitch's was our favorite) and a great view of downtown across the bay.

The GF loves Crossfit and really enjoyed the gym. It had all the equipment she wanted and with Covid she felt very safe being outside and having staff constantly cleaning.

Room was huge and very modern. The bed was especially comfortable.

Konai is actually a very relaxing place with great views and incredible staffs. However i couldn't enjoy my stay and had issues with the room, renting boat, the restaurant and also the pool.

The room had live and dead moths scattered inside the restroom and slugs climbing on the cracked yard. Water pipes are loud, and you can hear it when the neighboring rooms take a shower. It was hard getting access to internet since the walls block signals better than it block sound, while the wifi is slow and unstable.

I did have a nice time on the tandem kayak, but didn't expected how few rentals are available, it sucked when someone else have the same idea for the only fun cat, except they booked it for the rest of the day.

The restaurant is fully booked most of the time, and for anyone looking at their website, happy hour doesnt include Saturday. Should have included that on the site.

Pool close way too early and both pools are packed with people who just lay on the chair, especially for the adult pool, no one swim there.

At the end of the day, it was nice strolling around looking at the beach, chilling on the private small private beach, trying to forget all the frustration i had with this trip, it was pretty nice. Even though the pricing isn't too expensive, but it does exceed what was offered in Kona Kai.
