Detailed Reviews
We stayed here because of it's close proximity to SDSU for a concert that we were attending. I got there earlier than expected and they happily found a room for me to check in. The whole check in process took about 5 minutes.Nice!
The room was very clean and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. The linens were comfy. They also have sanitized tv remotes which I appreciated.
My only complaint about the room was that they seemed a little stingy with the bathroom amenities with one very small bar of soap for the bathroom sink. They use shower wall dispensers with bath wash and shampoo (great for the environment, yes) but they did not have conditioner. It seems almost standard practice for hotels to provide shampoo and conditioner and so that they didn't have conditioner was puzzling.
They provide complimentary breakfast with your typical fare of make your own waffles, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, toast, coffee, and scrambled eggs. It was just fine and I was thankful for the coffee.
Also, there are several fun restaurants within a few blocks - Japanese, Mediterranean, and a BBQ type place. The Japanese place was packed at 5:30pm!
If I am back in this area I would stay here again.

Hi SLM_momma, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We really do appreciate it and I am sure others in the community do to! We’re glad everything met your expectations. Our experienced Housekeeping staff take their job very seriously making sure that everything is prepared for our guest when they arrive. It is true that we use small travel sized soaps for our rooms. Did you know how much soap is wasted and thrown away each year? If you think about how many soap bars are left over by the number of rooms a hotel has, multiply that by the number of days in a year, AND then multiply that by the number of hotels in America? It ends up being a lot of unnecessary waste filling our landfills. There are actually non-profit organizations that collect the used bars of soap to recycle and are sent to countries that need it. Strange but true! It is a win-win for everyone. Just as you mentioned, we now have wall dispenser for both conditioning shampoo & soap. Many hotels are changing to the dispenser to cut waste and go in a more eco-friendly direction. Although the dispenser says, shampoo, it is actually a conditioning shampoo so it is a shampoo & conditioner all in one. However, if you would like more we have some at the Front Desk upon request. We are definitely lucky to have such great restaurants near us within less than 5 mins walk. There are plenty more down the roads if you are looking for something different and you would find it less than 15 minutes away. Even the Convoy/Clairemont restaurants are close and easy to get to from here and offer a wide variety of food but are really known for their Asian Cuisine. Thank you again for choosing our hotel during your stay in San Diego & we hope to see you again the next time you are in the area. Sincerely, Ookii Front Desk Best Western Lamplighter Inn

The Lamplighter is our "go to" hotel when in San Diego. Local ownership and management shows in the landscaping, clean pool, safe parking, and rooms that are furnished with comfortable beds, efficient a/c, bathrooms with good water pressure. Quiet area. Wonderful breakfast with COVID procedures. Clean area for washing clothes if you need to. Always a friendly welcome, efficient check-in/out.

We enjoyed our stay & would stay here again if we returned. Customer service and cleanliness in the room was outstanding !! The bed was very comfortable with what seemed like brand new crisp sheets. Appreciated the kitchenette in our king size bed room, perfect size that had everything and more than we needed. Bathroom was extremely clean & plently of hot water & towels. Huge long dresser that was handy to place our personal items, TV was good size & a huge variety of channel choices. Elizabeth at the front desk made our check in smooth & fast as we were tired from driving, the lobby area is beautifully decorated and the small area outside the lobby was perfect with chairs and tables to sit and enjoy the sunshine. Anabel the next morning was busy preparing the breakfast area making sure everything was hot/cold, everything was delicious and over the top of what we expected, the hot oatmeal and homemade waffles with plenty of goodies to add, pastries are not your normal sugar sweets, these are flaky and just yummmy. Appreciate all the efforts the employees went to to make this a good stay for people which includes us. Thank you

Staff members were pleasant, the pool was really nice, and the rooms were great. Comfy pillows and blankets! Only complaints - no hot tub, and the breakfast options were limited. I really enjoyed having the family suite - having a stocked kitchen with dishes and utensils was super helpful for the long trip!

Hello Valued Guest, Thank you for your great review! Our entire team strives to provide great service along with clean, well maintained rooms and your comments motivate us to keep up the good work. Our guests love relaxing in our lush pool area. We are sorry that we don't have a hot tub. Unfortunately, there are no plans to install one but, guests do enjoy the heated pool most of the year. Our typical continental breakfast has a variety of pastries from a local bakery, steel cut oats with toppings, freshly baked waffles, scrambled eggs with either sausage or potatoes, yogurt, fresh fruit, lots of coffee, tea and juices. We also have a gluten free item available and dairy free milk, upon request. Unfortunately, during this pandemic that the world is experiencing, our breakfast room must remain closed. But, until we are able to reopen it, we do have a few snacks available at the front desk for our guests each morning. We are glad to see that you were satisfied with your accommodations. The family suites are spacious and functional, having 2 queen sized beds in the bedroom, which is separated by a door from the living room area which has a sofa bed and the studio sized kitchen with apartment sized appliances. They are definitely great for longer stays. Thank you so much for sharing your experience here on TripAdvisor with our potential guests! We hope to serve you again if you are ever back in the area! Yours in Hospitality, Michelle C. Front Office Manager

Even though it is on a busy street the Lamplighter was very quiet. The management seems very concerned about the details. The lobby is inviting and beautifully decorated, the parking lot clean and the landscaping was well-tended.
We stayed at this hotel during Thanksgiving, not the best time to travel but I felt that the management and staff of the hotel did their best to keep us (and them) safe. Rooms were extremely clean. There was no housekeeping during our stay so that we would have no one else in our room after it was sanitized. Breakfast was prepackaged. Not up to the usual BW standards but SAFE.
The management and staff were very friendly; all wore masks and kept their distance which was very reassuring. I am looking forward to staying here again in more "normal" times.

I booked a room via a third party website for two nights. The room I booked was for two beds and four people. Somehow, there was a problem and I was given a room with only one bed. There was no rooms available with two beds. I needed two beds for family friends that were helping with my mom's funeral the following day. Ookii, who was the front desk rep, made the decision to give me two rooms with one bed for the first night, until a room with two beds is available the next day. According to Ookii, the problem was with the booking process by the third party.
I know that not any property would have done that. Some properties would have told me to deal with the third party website that I booked from. Ookii went above and beyond. His professionalism and customer service skills were on par with 4/5 stars properties. I was glad to have one less thing to worry about. I'm also glad the management team there empowers their employees to make impactful, positive decisions.
Thank you, Ookii, management and Best Western Lamplighter!

Dear Valued Guest, WOW! We simply cant thank you enough for providing such pleasant feedback regarding your stay with us, and recognizing our amazing front desk agent, Ookii. He has been with our company for many years and continues to provide exceptional customer service. Our front desk team takes pride in their work, and as you experienced, it is reflected through our service and guest experience. Our company culture is to provide quality, affordability and great customer service to our guests. Our hotel is a modest, AAA 2-diamond family owned property with many free amenities that you may end up having to pay in more expensive hotels. We make sure that the grounds are lush and well kept, we never charge for parking, internet, breakfast or movies. We tend to rate highly with guests who have done their research, appreciate genuine hospitality, value cleanliness, and want to get the most out of their dollar. Again, thank you again for providing such wonderful compliments, you can only imagine how proud this makes us feel as a company! If you're booking this property, you're either doing something at SDSU (like I was) or looking to pay less vs the hotel circle properties. I spent two days there and only really saw that it was a motel from the reviews. For my purpose, it was totally fine. Had a double queen room. Pretty spacious and most of all it WAS CLEAN. This is why I booked it: Close to SDSU (5-8 minute drive), free parking, free breakfast; not the most inexpensive but it looked decent online. Yes it's a motel, get over it especially is you're driving. I had seen online that that maybe someone didn't get a parking spot so I messaged the hotel to see if I was going to get one when I arrrived at 10pm and it was fine. Again room was big, a/c worked great, fridge, wifi worked very well. Bathroom set up a la motel style (sink outside of bathroom). It was very quiet (I was on the ground floor) and was able to park my rental car right outside my door. My only complaint (hence not the 5th star) was that when I got there at 10pm, the lobby door was shut and no one was picking up the phone on the posted sign, (a few minutes of asking myself if there was a cutoff to check in ) but the receptionist finally arrived. Check in was smooth. Also, I needed the iron for this trip and it didn't work but the housekeeper changed it out for a brand new one! The free breakfast is fine (it's free!); coffee, fruit, oatmeal, pastries, waffles, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, bagels. Book somewhere else more expensive it you want scrmbled eggs and sausage. Hard to complain when it's free. Didn't use the pool or BBQs but nice that they have. Free coffee and free snacks in the lobby. The Lamplighter checked off all my boxes. Would I stay there again; absolutley. Do I wish it were cheaper since it's a motel, sure. But the staff are nice, free parking, spacious rooms in the old style (they all look the same size), something to eat in the morning. Lots of clean towels and clean sheets. I'll stay again!

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your review with us! Were glad to hear overall you enjoyed your stay with us. As you mentioned, we are centrally located just within 15–20-minute drive to some of San Diegos most popular attractions. We have many SDSU friends and family members stay with us because of the close proximity we are to the campus. We are 1.3 miles away making it walking distance to and from the campus. My family stayed at this properly last week. My elderly parents were easily placed in a ground floor room so they did not have to deal with stairs. My children and I had an upstairs suite with a small kitchen. The rooms were spacious, quiet and spotless. There was everything necessary in the kitchen for quick meals had I wanted to cool. I did not have to because their included breakfast was fantastic. We had our choice of pastries, coffee, water for tea, bagels and cream cheese, made to order waffles, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, even fresh hot oatmeal. The staff was attenuative and helpful. The WI-FI and TV service kept my teens happy. Parking was readily available and off street. The pool was chilly but my kids were in it anyway. The grounds were well cared for and the gardens were beautiful and added to our enjoyment. This place truly is a hidden gem and we will be back.

When we booked this place we were suspicious of how good the reviews were, but it turns out this really is a lovely hotel. Our room was spacious, with comfortable beds and a powerful, hot shower. The lady who checked us in was very welcoming and friendly, and the free hot drinks in the front lobby were a nice touch.
Parking was ample and the location seemed safe - the hotel is on a main road and there are lots of vibrant businesses like bars and restaurants nearby, but the immediate vicinity was perfectly quiet.
The breakfast was very good, with some tasty cakes and treats we haven't come across before, as well as the usual fare. However, we didn't personally enjoy eating in that room, since the TV was tuned to a certain vulpine-related channel that was pumping out its usual outrageous lies. By the second morning of our stay, we decided to take my food back to my room so we wouldn't have to listen to the TV.
The pool looked great, although we didn't have time to use it ourselves.
One more tiny complaint - it would've been nice to have some USB chargers in the room. This is a modern touch that all hotels need now, as times have changed. But this is only a small thing, and it doesn't detract from the overall excellence of the hotel. I'd happily come back to this place any time if I returned to San Diego.

Check in was a breeze, the front desk was polite and energetic, made us feel welcomed. Had a smile and informed us about our stay. Parking was a little tight though but we were lucky to get a good spot. Our room was right near the office so we didn't have to wander off too far. The room was great with a kitchen (did not expect that) Restroom was spacious and the sink was outside the restroom so that's a plus. There was only one ice machine and that was by the pool area. So it was quite far especially for an evening walk(not too big of a deal though) . Night activity was calm but it resides on a main street so there is alot going on but wasn't too bad on our trip. There were a couple of shady people but it was a come and go type of situation so They didn't stick around. Next day breakfast was basic but convenient ( least it's something) ranging from cereal, pastries to hard-boiled eggs and yogurt. Weather was great. Love the gloomy weather (cloudy and fresh) . Check out was quick, that front desk lady was also polite and made sure we had a great stay. Would stay again if I were in the area.
