Detailed Reviews
If you’re looking for a hotel that seamlessly blends history, elegance, and comfort, look no further. This beautifully preserved historic property offers all the modern amenities you’d expect while maintaining its classic charm. The team here takes immense pride in the hotel, and it shows in every detail—from the warm hospitality to the impeccable upkeep.
Location:
Perfectly situated in the heart of San Diego, this hotel makes it easy to explore the city on foot. Whether you’re here for work or leisure, you’ll find yourself just steps away from great dining, shopping, and cultural attractions.
Parking:
Valet parking is the only option, but the service is excellent—always friendly and efficient. I opted for Uber to and from the airport, which was incredibly convenient.
Check-in:
I arrived late at night and was greeted with a warm smile. The front desk team made me feel immediately welcome, providing a quick yet thorough overview of the amenities. This was my second stay at the hotel (my first was pre-COVID), and I was happy to find that the service remains top-notch.
Room:
Thanks to my Marriott status, I was upgraded to a lovely corner suite. The room was spotless, featuring high-quality linens, luxurious bath products, and thoughtful touches like a mini fridge, slippers, robes, and a turndown service that felt extra special. Since this hotel is over 100 years old, each room has its own unique charm. Mine, located on the 11th floor, was incredibly quiet. While there are minor signs of wear due to the building’s age, housekeeping does an exceptional job maintaining cleanliness and comfort.
Amenities:
While there’s no pool, the well-equipped fitness center is a great alternative for staying active during your stay.
Food & Beverage:
The hotel features an onsite restaurant and room service. Though I didn’t have the chance to dine in, the restaurant was always buzzing with guests—a promising sign!
Would I Stay Again?
Absolutely! Whether you’re visiting for business or a getaway, this hotel offers an exceptional experience. I look forward to returning on my next trip to San Diego.

A wonderful hotel experience! From a warm greeting when checking in at 11pm to all the lovely service people we encountered. In room dining was the best ever - less than 30 min with linens, place settings and featuring a hot, & delicious breakfast. The bed, pillows and linens were sumptuous. Staff was very helpful with extra fluffy towels, car service, etc. Special shoutout to Mark Peak at the Concierge desk who helped with directions, recommendations and guidance on where to go and how best to get there. Thank you!! We visited the Lounge and also had a special last night dinner at The Grill. The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to so many places. It was an overall great experience and one of the best places we ever stayed.

This hotel is upscale and deserves at least 4-stars for the amenities, service, quality, and Gaslamp location.
The room was sizable for a downtown location with comfortable beds, ample closet space, a roomy bathroom and a quality desk facing the window. I appreciated the turned down bed and mat on the floor when arriving later in the evening.
The breakfast was very good, though they were running behind when they opened at 7AM with several people lined up by that hour and ready to eat. Maybe consider opening at 6:30AM?
The gym had everything I needed.
The lobby had a very luxurious feel, which is in keeping with the hotel’s name.
I was able to walk to highly recommend eateries, making the location great. There is a homeless problem in the area, but it wasn’t like I felt unsafe and it’s not the hotel’s fault.
Parking was at a premium, which is pretty typical for downtown hotels, but $57/night for valet is still too steep.
Extra shout out to management and the front desk for letting me check out a day early without a fee. Business wrapped up sooner than expected, so I decided I would try to fly home early and the staff accommodated my checkout without a fee request.

Like an ever-growing number of Marriott-branded properties, you really never know what to expect until you step through the front door & this "Luxury-branded" property fits that description. Lovely lobby that speaks to historical luxury & every staff member encountered were helpful & professional & the property had good housekeeping throughout. Unfortunately, the rooms are often less impressive in such historical properties even if it carries a "luxury" designation. Old worn, paint-chipped windowsills with see-through holes in the drapes & a thin, worn & tattered pull-down shade in the bathroom. Pleasant restaurant & bar for evening relaxation. Unfortunately, the Central-Downtown location on Broadway has some issues like many cities. LOTS of homeless encounters with some being aggressive, & the buildings on 1 side of the hotel are totally empty & unoccupied & a homeless magnet. Probably why the hotel has basically closed most former entrance points & use the Valet driveway for the main entrance, but the original main entrance can still be accessed with your key card. The lovely Plaza across the street from the main entrance remains vacant & closed down & apparently still under re-construction. The former Horton Plaza Shopping Center in central Downtown has been closed for several years, which is directly adjacent to the Westin Gaslamp. As such, you will need to walk a few blocks to the Gaslamp District for bars & restaurants which may be of concern to some guests. If so, perhaps you should consider Marina, Convention Center of other Waterfront properties.

I had originally booked for two rooms with two queen beds and last minute they had said they only had one room in the hotel with two queen beds left so they would upgrade our rooms to suites which we were fine with. It was only when we had arrived at the hotel that there started to be problems. First, our kettle in the room had mold in it and while they did bring us a new one it’s something that they should have checked before letting us check in. Another thing, we asked them for little things such as forks and cups so that we could eat and drink as it had been a long day, and blankets to accommodate for the singular king bed rather than two queen beds. They took a long time to get us the forks when there wasn’t anyone in their lobby when bringing our personal belongings upstairs and as for the cups and blankets we never received them. The cups were fine we ended up just using taking turns which was a hassle. But when we called the front desk asking how much longer on the blankets they had said they ran out in the hotel after previously saying that they would bring it up to the room.

What a disappointment this hotel was! The view from the suite looked like a prison- scaffolding everywhere. We were told it would cost $600 extra per night to change to a better suite without scaffolding view! We declined that $ 600 per night upgrade. It was our anniversary- and no acknowledgement or amenity was offered. This was booked by Virtuoso travel agency so we expected a level of hospitality and excellence that was not provided. Staff does not care at all about your comfort or satisfaction. We checked out one night early since we really couldn’t stand the view with curtains open. When curtains were closed, the room was a dark cave. They said they were “ fully committed “ but website showed many other rooms and suites available which were not offered to us-however, they offered to send “a drink “ to the room which we declined since my husband does not drink. There was nothing offered for our dissatisfaction or inconvenience. Customer service is terrible for any hotel but extremely disappointing for a “ luxury property”We were charged for 2 vehicles by the valet ( extra $120 for 2 nights) but only had one vehicle there. We did not get proper virtuoso and breakfast credits. Had to call guest services multiple times to straighten out the bill. Again, another disappointment at this hotel. Check your bill very carefully if you stay here but do not recommend staying here period.

I had a last-minute stay here and wow, what a gem! The hotel itself is absolutely stunning, with a timeless elegance that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. The room was a dream, Frette sheets and Byredo products really added a touch of indulgence. What really stood out, though, was the service. Alejandro at the front desk made check-in a breeze and was so warm and welcoming. The concierge was incredibly helpful with recommendations and went above and beyond to make sure everything I found my way around the key places I wanted to visit. One star removed for what other people have commented about which is the less that admirable surrounding area, I didn't feel unsafe per say but I just didn't want to be in the area for long.

I stayed at the hotel for a board meeting along w my other board members and management. Nov 7 to Nov 10.
I m a titanium member of Bonvey and love to stay at the Marriott hotels and was very looking forward to it.
I want to share my feedback w the future travelers and the hotel management.
The turndown service was inconsistent, one day there was one and the other day was none. I did give the hotel customers service this feedback when the service was missing.
I experienced the worst check out of all my Marriott stay when I checked out on Nov 10. The company had already prepaid the hotel rooms and the breakfasts (at 60 dollars a day), when I checked out, I waited for a while and a Sylvia (sp?) helped me and she wanted to charge me an amount that I could not reconcile and I told her all are prepaid and she insisted that I need to be charged but could not tell me the calculation. The co sent me a notes and stated that the prepaid breakfast was accumulated and she refused to acknowledge it. I asked her to check w the manager, she was gone for a very long time to the back office and then came out to help others instead of me. The other ppl at the front desk seemed not willing to help her. I started the check out process at 4 pm and did not finally finished it at close to 5 pm, she said to me at the end that her manager had taking care of it, as if they did me a favor. I asked for a printout for the final statement, she agreed and then did not provide till I went back to ask again and she acted like that I did not ask for it earlier.
She expressed her impatience toward me and seemed not willing to help and hoping that I would go away.
Because the one hour long checkout, I was late to check in my flight and was told that my luggage may not make it with me. I had to change my plan to take a Uber to LAX instead my Delta flight. There was no more Delta that night and I needed to go to another international flight.
Worst yet, when I returned home, I found out that US Grant had charged my credit card for the stay and the breakfast.
I asked the company to follow
this up because all the other ppl seem not to have any issues.
I overheard that on the day of Nov 10, there were 3 guests were sent to the wrong rooms. Today I asked Bonvey to
follow this up.
Training and attitude toward guests need to be improved. It is a shame that this happened!
Yes, I have yet to receive the refund or got an email form the hotel, just an email to link to their store.

2 kids and 2 adults stayed in a deluxe king room connected to a deluxe queen room. The hotel exceeded our expectations. Some of the reviews here are lackluster, but we found the service impeccable, the rooms very nice and comfortable and the food decent. We stayed under AmEx's Fine Hotels and Resorts program, and the front desk folks were really nice and helped us use the program's perks to their fullest. The hotel's bar and restaurant area were really beautiful and matched with the style of the buildings surrounding us in the Gaslamp district. We ordered room service one night and ordered a side of vegetables. I was really impressed with the selection of veggies including turnips and broccolini, all well cooked. Usually veggie sides at restaurants seem to come straight out of a frozen bag of succotash, but these seemed to be selected and cooked with care.
There was a convenient CVS right next door which we visited twice, having flown from out of town and needing a few things. The uber ride to the Zoo was easy and short. There is also a store called Krisp a few blocks away with a really nice selection of prepared food, alcohol, and fancy snacks. The wine I grabbed from there ended up being one of the tastiest California reds I've had in a long time.
One note about the location. There are a lot of people sleeping on the sidewalks. I didn't feel unsafe, it just kind of grim to see. Especially because there are so many beautiful old buildings in the area, you'd love to see the area thrive more.
Two small quibbles with the rooms. We were there on a rainy weekend and there wasn't an umbrella provided in the room for us to use. It's possible they would have offered one if I had called and asked, but I didn't think of that until later. I know rain is rare in San Diego, but the next hotel we stayed at in La Jolla did provide an umbrella in the room.
Also, it would have been nice to have a tub after our plane ride in addition to a shower.

The hotel itself is nice but my room (and I suspect about 30 others in the hotel) was directly next to elevators and my room shook and rattled all night. I was told my only option to not have a loud / vibrating room was to pay another $750 per night and upgrade to a suite. If you care about being able to sleep, consider booking elsewhere.

Hi I do not recall a lounge but as a platinum member I did get free breakfast in the restaurant. TS
In our suite there was a mini fridge BUT was not designed or cold enough to keep food only drinks which was a bit odd. There was a plaque on the mini fridge stating this. There was a coffee maker of sorts but we never use them so I paid little to no attention to this. On another note the hotels brewed coffee was excellent in my opinion.
Haven’t booked a wedding there but we did stay there a couple of months ago and it was beautiful!
