I had obviously read the negative reviews and in particular about all the homeless people surrounding the hotel so we were not expecting much but as we were only there for 2 nights decided to chance it. I am so glad we did! This is a beautiful and historical hotel. The lobby is very impressive (and no, I did not have to step over homeless people to enter). Our room was perfect and we ate in the Grant Grill which was wonderful. I've been lucky enough to stay in many nice hotels but what sets the Grant aside are the wonderful staff. Literally everyone who we met could not have been more friendly, polite and helpful - they really made our stay exceptional (particularly Oscar - thank you so much). I would have no hesitation to stay here again and wholeheartedly recommend it. It's in the Gaslamp District so also in a great location. Just book it!

Hotel's Favorite
Just checked out of this hotel after a three night stay. Prior to traveling I always read the negative reviews so I know what we may encounter. Pleased to say our experience completely contradicted every single negative review. Government business travelers who added a day on for our enjoyment, the Gov ID was verified and the rate honored, no questions or hassles. Used our Suite nights to upgrade from a basic room to a Legacy Suite, again, with no issues. Check in was flawless and pleasant. Our room, 914, was spotless. At the advertised 375 sq ft it was delightful. Included a refrigerator with adjustable temps, thick towels and even luxurious toilet paper! I brought ear plugs as I’d heard the hotel was noisy, we barely heard anything from the street and definitely neither heard nor saw other guests on our floor. Room service the evening we ordered was hot and prompt. Free coffee in the lobby each morning. Breakfast every day in the Grant Grill was absolutely special and delicious. Enrique and Jose took excellent care of us refilling beverages and wrapping up leftovers. Bar Saturday night had great live Jazz. Gaslamp area was so fun in the evenings. We saw no homeless encampments and never saw anything unusual in the area around the hotel. I don’t discount other reviewers experiences, but our experience was just so completely positive it’s hard to believe it’s the same hotel. Either the negative reviews are a tad off base, or the hotel has heard the feedback and improved, because we have had the privilege of staying a other luxury hotels and this was nothing short of a five star, luxury experience. Hope we get to stay again soon!

I actually found nothing wrong with anything in the hotel. The room was fabulous, the restaurant/bar was impressive, but the front desk (Rebecca) was extraordinary! I screwed up my own reservation, and she went beyond and above any expectations I had! This even though old (on the historic register) in my opinion is a 5-star facility. Yes, it costs a bit more than other hotels in the area, but as they say, "you get what you pay for" and I certainly did. I shall return when in SD!

- Upon check in we were told our reserved room choice would need to be downgraded in order to accommodate placing our children and our rooms near each other - After being downgraded, we were given two rooms with the following issues; - The King Room had a dead bug on the bed and something that looked like blood on the sheer curtains - The Double Room bathroom door around handle was FILTHY and wall was heavily stained - We were downgraded FURTHER, moved to two new rooms situated directly in front of a 24 hour construction zone (including at NIGHT), with the following issues; - A used stained robe (King Room) - Filthy headboard with a palm sized stain on it (King Room) - A worn tattered duvet with a fray hole (King Room) - Decorative pillow with white "s*m*n like" stains all over it (which I personally walked down to the front desk as that was UNACCEPTABLE) No pool, need to warm up food? No microwaves ANYWHERE. There is more....but the pictures say it ALL.

A wonderful stay. Location is perfect and the rooms are very comfortable. The hotel has class and the staff reflect that. No negatives other than the lifts need a bit of an upgrade, other than that a perfect hotel and very much worth a visit if in San Diego

We stayed a couple of night last January and had some concerns after reading many reviews... the room itself was quite, well appointed and very comfortable-the large window in the bathroom was a plus. We were not impacted by construction nearby and enjoyed the neighbourhood (San Diego can easily be sketchy in parts and there is little you can do about it unless one wants to be further away from the Gaslamp district). As we refused to pay almost as much to park our car as to sleep (granted, we got a good price on the room!), it took a little while but we found a self-park nearby that was way more affordable. We had dinner and breakfast in the dining room and food and service were perfectly fine. It was housekeeping, room service and the front desk staff (including on-site manager) who were disappointing. We had to wait a very long time, and to call on a few occasions, to get a few items that had not placed in the room in the first place and when, at check out, this was brought up with the on-site manager, she did not seem to really care or offer anything than basic apologies. Not what we expect from a Luxury Collection Hotel or a Fine Hotel and Resorts member.

Beautiful lobby, very comfy room and great location but that’s as far as I would go. For a five star hotel it offers little else (unless you’re there as a corporate client). There’s no atmosphere, the bar only opens later in the day/night and is VERY uninviting. There is NO outdoor space at all. It didn’t help our room looking out onto a hotel opposite which had a beautiful outdoor pool area !

Things did not go as planned even during check in, despite booking with amex there was no room available and no room upgrade. The room was not clean and the carpet was just gross. We called to switch rooms, but no one called or followed up with us. I had wanted to order champagne for arrival and I was told that was not possible but they could deliver between 4-6pm. I told them this was not what I wanted and cancelled the request. This happened anyway and made for an awkward and stressful encounter. The room was noisy, we called and the only response was "most guests find that to be a quite room." The lobby is gorgeous, I just wish the rooms matched. Next time I will stay at another hotel.

I had a perfectly fine stay at this hotel. Most importantly, rooms are well equipped, comfortable, and I was happy with the friendly housekeeping staff. Due to the historical nature, the building has a lot of character. While I certainly did not have any bad experiences, and the few staff interactions I had were all pleasant, the hotel felt a bit understaffed at times. Basically the only staffed entrance is the entrance with the parking valet desk. The homelessness problem is on full display in the area around the hotel, but that is an issue across the downtown/gaslamp/convention area in San Diego. For those who wish to avoid that, I think the hotels in Coronado, just across the Bay are a good option. But again, I had an overall pleasant stay at this hotel and would return when visiting San Diego alone for business.

When thinking luxury, the customer should feel welcomed and greeted as such. The quality of bedding should also be consistent with the hotel category. NOT at this hotel. Management supports it’s staff that treats people poorly. In addition to its poorly maintain bedding. As a Platinum Bonvoy Memeber and traveling to many Marriott branded locations yearly, this property by far is one to avoid unless you are looking for nostalgia.Could this be a one off situation? Possibly. But when writing to Marriott, the tone and response from the hotel was consistent with the unapologetic front desk. An apology but no effort to acknowledge the guest experience.
