I would give this hotel a higher rating for it's wonderful pool and history, however, instead of being a wonderful, exclusive boutique swim club and bungalows, it has been turned into a party location. If that's what you are looking for, this place is perfect. If not, avoid in the summer and at weekends. They allow non-hotel residents to use...

We stayed in a cabana by the pool which we recommend for others. All the staff were great. The neighborhood is laid back. Everything is great around here. Check it out for sure if you are into the classic American style.

Neat 40's-50's decor. Good breakfast cafe. Very noisy at night when hosting outside parties. Poor service when trying to book stay. Repeated promises to call back with availability with 0 response. Bathrooms could be cleaner.

We booked The Lafayette because of the New York Times article, "36 Hours in San Diego." The updated "motel-style" rooms are large -our 2nd floor room overlooked the pool with our own balcony. The pool is 25 meters, perfect for laps, plus has a 7ft deep end. Would recommend breakfast and/or drinks in the restaurant - we went both days....

Loved the vibe of this place. Room was spacious, nothing glitzy but simple and clean overlooking the large lap pool which was surrounded by palm trees. We felt like we were living in an earlier time when life was easier . . . very relaxing sitting in the rocking chair with the sun streaming in from the French doors leading...

Loved this place. The restaurants were fabulous, pool, was beautiful and room was just lovely. Location was perfect for,our first visit to San Diego. Nothing fancy but just perfect. Staff was super helpful and friendly. Off the beaten track from the main hot spots but it just didn't matter. Uber was readily available.

Finally, been driving past this historic hotel since 1988 and knew just by the looks alone, it HAD to be cool. Last month, I had a best friend from Chicago come stay with me here for a long weekend. It was suggested that during my friend's visit to San Diego, we make a staycation out of it and get a...

I chose the Lafayette for my home base during a conference because it was much more reasonably priced than the big hotels down near the San Diego Convention Center. I reserved a Suze Suite even though I was traveling alone - mostly because the location of those suites seemed like it would be the quietest. I was very pleased with...

Historic hotel with old school charm. Has some pros and cons. Cons: Hotel room was pretty outdated as far as decor. The view was overlooking the rooftop which left much to be desired but, we only paid $75 so we couldn't complain. I'm sure other rooms had nice views. Weak hair dryer. Very thin walls so it is true that...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1946, the Lafayette has been the site of historical glamour, and offers a unique change from a typical hotel experience. Among its famous guests were Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Betty Grable. Inside, the Mississippi Ballroom took center stage where Hollywood’s stars came to dance the night away. Conveniently located to all shopping, entertainment and business areas, the historic Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows is, indeed, the best lodging choice in San Diego. ... more   less
