Built in 1946, the Lafayette has been the site of historical glamour, and offers a unique change from a typical hotel experience. Among its famous guests were Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Betty Grable. Inside, the Mississippi Ballroom took center stage where Hollywood’s stars came to dance the night away. Conveniently located to all shopping, entertainment and business areas, the historic Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows is, indeed, the best lodging choice in San Diego.

I have mixed reviews regarding my stay at this hotel. The walls are paper thin, could hear everything going on. The first night it was so bad I had to call the front desk to intervene which they did come up to the room and advise the guest of the noise they were making. Some of the people in the room did leave, however there were many that stayed in the room another couple of hours, which made it very difficult for me to get any sleep the first night. If you want a partying place, book room, if you want quiet, stay away from balcony rooms. No daily room service, This was not shared at check-in it wasn’t until I came back and realize the room had not been cleaned and when I inquired about it I was told they don’t clean daily. There were several outlets that needed replacing. Several light bulbs were not working. There was no air conditioning in the bathroom. The tub stopper would not stay up therefore water filled the tub while taking a shower, unless you put something to keep it open. The front lobby of the hotel very beautiful. The parking is $22 a night and sometimes the parking lot was full, so you would have to wait until someone left to get a spot . There is no parking on the street. My granddaughter had a great time at the pool the staff was very friendly and for the most part people were practicing social distancing. The second night was quiet as a guest on both sides of me were quiet. However the third night there was a different set of people and they were very loud partied until 3 o’clock in the morning which again I was not able to get any sleep. The pool closes at 10 PM, however people continue to party in their rooms which they were not so supposed to be doing that, however they were. With the rooms being paper then it made it very difficult to get any sleep because you could hear everything that was going on. I would recommend it if you like being in the pool getting a poolside balcony would be great however if you are not into the pool stay away from the balconies. I think the hotel needs to renovate the rooms a little more. They do not have hotel to airport accommodation even though they are close to the airport. The hotel itself is near several different places to go however you will need transportation unless you take the public transportation. I didn’t feel very safe as my room door faced the parking lot, where people gathered to smoke and the door didn’t seem very secure. Would I stay at this hotel again? Probably so, however no more than a couple of nights and the reason I would stay is because my granddaughter loved being in the pool.

Joseph and the team at The Lafayette made our quick trip away from home so worth it! Was greeted so warmly by him and his amazing staff. Everything was explained clearly, the room was so cozy and just perfect for the quick getaway my husband and I so desperately needed. Joseph's recommendations of restaurants and eateries were spot on. Breakfast was delicious and convenient as we dined at the hotel's restaurant Hope 46. We cannot wait to come back again! Thank you Lafayette Hotel!

I just returned from a relaxing long weekend stay here during the holiday weekend. My best friend and I felt right at home from the moment we arrived, with great service and a friendly staff throughout. The manager, Joseph, was key to keeping the hotel running smoothly as we experienced and observed, and he handled guests' needs with care and charm. The hotel's decor of retro chic was a nice touch, and during afternoons at the pool, the music transitioned to a great mix of light house and familiar grooves. Food at Hope 46 was delicious - especially the brunch items.
