staff was great from Kevin at the front desk to the gals in the breakfast room that kept everything tidy and well stocked. The pool was great, too. Plenty of room on the deck to move chairs around to capture the sun or avoid it. Spacious and well lit room. The balcony, which sometimes are about 8 inches, was roomy. Ok, the view was not perfect but the fresh air was. No need for a car. Walking distance to Petco Park, Gas Lamp Qtr and more. Will go again probably as a winter get away.

Let’s start with check in, arrived around 1:30pm had to wait till 3:30 the lady at the front desk was courteous but overwhelmed, big week as huge convention going on please staff accordingly. When I did check in I was given a double bed room, I am a single. Come on man. Don’t ask the front desk people anything about recommendations for dinner or distance to anywhere cause they reply like you are bothering them, sorry man I’m not from here and just looking for some hospitality help. One of the HI that still have free beer and wine a couple days a week, but once again they have a young hopefully old enough to serve girl serving a bar full of drunk middle aged men and flirting with them so much she could not see me standing there with a 5 dollar tip just looking for a cold beer after a long day of conferences. I literally stood there for like 5 minutes before I just turned away and went to my room. By the way the bar and sitting area was a mess, you should train this person to do some cleaning in between the flirting. And finally I didn’t mention I am a Spire elite member and the room I had only had a refrigerator and no microwave??? Shouldn’t the room have both? I have food in my refrigerator to microwave as I’m staying here for four days and oh no. Please refresh training with your team, HI is a great franchise and you are lacking in customer service. I will not stay here again.

I’m a traveler. I know how to choose hotels and try to get the best for my money as any normal person would do when you like to travel in a budget. THIS HOTEL DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The location is near all major attractions, I loved the fact they offer a free shuttle to local places and from the airport. I really liked that twice when I called for the shuttle to get picked up I was told the driver was not available and they offered to pay my Lyft or Uber back to the hotel. Upon arriving I sent the receipt to the front desk email as per staff and I got what I’m paid cash right then and there! The staff was cordial and super attentive the whole time I was there. Specifically one of the ladies at the front desk (I forgot her name, I emailed them to her her name an couldn’t get it from them) she was very knowledgeable of the area and recommended the restaurant tenet to them to try and it was amazing! I know from other guests, El Cortez’s small bistro is good but never tried it. Breakfast was really yummy! Plenty of options and I normally eat KETO and was able to get a meal there. Security is great as you are not able to access other floors without a keycard. The lobby always has fresh water, lemonade and in the afternoon fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. TIPS for you: 1. If visiting a local attraction, make sure to schedule with reception for the shuttle to take you. 2. If visiting San Diego zoo, get the tickets from the hotel as it was the cheaper I found. 3. If you like to walk, you can go to the harbor, little Italy, Gaslamp quarter as is in good walking distance. 4. Take advantage of the “happy hour”, they offer wine, beer and chips/nuts for free. 5. Each room has a mini fridge but no microwave however, we used the one at the lobby once without any issues. 6. We rented a zip car to go to La Joya and Coronado. Definitely worth it! 7. Mission Beach was recommended by staff and it was $30 round trip via Lyft and totally worth it. 8. This hotel does not offer the mini toiletries anymore. Instead, they have the big bottles which were really good quality. 👍🏼 9. We had to shuttle drivers and both were very cordial and nice. 10. If you want to get some food like fruit, water and snacks there is a small market near by, about 2 blocks away. 11. The hotel provides a list of local restaurants and other information for travelers which I thought was a nice touch. ISSUES: 1. Out toilet needed to be flushed at least twice every time used it. The pressure was really low. Be aware. 2. The restroom door was odd as it slides but has a gap of 1/2” inch or so which it can be uncomfortable if traveling with friends. 3. The AC can be considered loud if you are a very light sleeper. We had no issue but wanted to point that out. Overall, if we go back or if any of my friends/family/ acquaintances want to visit SD, I’m recommending this place 💯% NO DOUBT! In a world full of cold hotels/staff this hotel and their staff are refreshing and offer a great service with a smile and for me that is worth gold!

We flew in from Salt Lake City and we enjoyed our shuttle ride to the hotel. Check in was easy. Staff were friendly. Bed was comfortable and room was spacious. Had a wonderful view. The shuttle will transport to various places in the city, but not the ballpark. We walked a mile down Saturday evening and we were fine. There was so much going on around the park afterwards that we had difficulty getting the Lyft back. We walked uphill and were VERY grateful for the full pitchers of ice cold waters down lemonade in the lobby. Breakfast had multiple options of toast, cereal, fruit, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, 2 kinds of omelette, bacon, turkey sausage..we loved their pancake maker. A wonderful overnight trip!

We helped move a family member to San Diego and chose Holiday Inn Express as our hotel for a week. The location is great...located northeast of the core of downtown and southwest of Balboa Park. Easy drive and easy access to main traffic arteries. The building is older and has been very nicely renovated and maintained. The guest room has modern carpet, tile, furniture and bedding. The bathroom was a little on the small side (I'm guessing the building dates to the 60's) but it has been renovated with a modern flair and included a walk-in shower. The room had a balcony which was a nice place to sit during the evening. Refrigerator in the room! Notes: The bathroom is small with limited places to hang wet linen...the clothing hanging is across from the bathroom door and works great for linen. You need a room key to access just about any floor from the elevator. Breakfast is good with plenty of seating and is a floor below the lobby. The AC acts like it has asthma, so, set it lower than you normally do and you will be fine. Parking - The hotel has parking for ~$20/night. The location is in a garage below the guest rooms and is very tight. If you have a wide or tall vehicle there is an option to park across the street in ACE parking for ~$30/night. My 4Runner would probably fit in the garage but no way would I try. Park your car and use Uber or Lyft to get around. Our stay was just fine and we will use this hotel for future visits.
