There are many reasons why San Diego is one of the most-visited and beloved cities in California. There is the wonderful weather (an average annual high of 71 degrees), endless outdoor activities, diverse neighborhoods, plenty of culture, family-friendly attractions and everything in between The Fairmont Grand Del Mar also offers two dozen weekly outdoor activities across the 400 acres – plus an outdoor fitness center – so that you can take in the dramatic canyon scenery. Hit the links on our 18-hole private Tom Fazio-designed golf course, then embrace well-being at our five-star spa. Lounge with a cool drink by one of four secluded palm-lined pools and dine on local artisan fare at six different venues, including San Diego’s only two-Michelin starred restaurant, Addison. Breathe deeply, dream wildly, and discover a soulful sanctuary where finding yourself comes naturally. Magic sits around every corner and within every conversation. It enchants through the charm of Los Peñasquitos Canyon and the sunshine of San Diego. It’s where classic meets cool, the fine unwinds into fun and inspiration leads to immersion.

The Fairmont Grand Del Mar is luxurious. You enter thought the guard gates and the grounds are vast. The lobby is impressive and the rooms are vast and very comfortable. It was nice wandering around and chilling. The hotel is remote. You will need a car or uber. Its about 30+ min to San Diego and the airport. Lovely hotel with gracious staff.

I have stayed at the Fairmont Del Mar several times. It is the only hotel I stay in when visiting San Diego. The hotel staff (every one) is simply fantastic. I enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the canyon views. Look forward to visiting again.

Far away from downtown and not much to do in the resort. Pools and golf course are average. There are supposed to have complimentary transfers within 10 miles drive and was told first come first serve basis. But they choose people to let them book. Do not have a consistent schedule for the rule they made. We are turned away by them by saying uber is not expensive too. But this is not the point. Very disappointing the way they treated the clients

Fairmont Grand Del Mar is GRAND. It's a go to for me and my fiancé, we love to spend our special occasions here, and as an ALL member, we get all the perks with it too. Beautiful property, extremely well trained staff, super friendly and just a pleasure to interact with. The Addison Restaurant is a true fine-dining experience, definitely worth the splurge. We visit both the hotel and the restaurant at least once a year and each time we leave with a desire to return yet again.

it was my Fiancé and I first visit to the grand del mar. It was a special trip. The Grand Del Mar team all across the resort were very welcoming, Especially the front gate greeter Jim. He definitely gave us a very wonderful first impression on arrival. Day one, Kai the front Desk Supervisor assisted us at check in. He was very kind, very strong voice, and was very knowledgeable on every aspect of the hotel. Our Dinner experience at the Amaya was simply wonderful. Carl the Restaurant manager was very funny and provided top notch conversation and reassurance during our dinner. On day 2 We had Breakfast at Amya, The servers were just simply one of a kind. Vladimir and Besim, They had such great synergy and energy, made our experience during breakfast truly memorable. while looking around the resort, Shel and Irene at concierge gave us amazing recommendations for recreational activities at the resort, such as archery. they went ahead and gave us a reservation for it to be sure we can do it. Also gave a number of recommended restaurants in the area. Incredible concierge team. While Idling through the Café we stumbled upon the gift shop. Arlene the one in charge of the gift shops was very welcoming and very kind. Chris Garcia the front desk manager, was very knowledgeable on restaurants in the area, and had a wonderful smile. At Archery, our instructor Ariel, was very kind and gave us detailed instructions on how to handle the bow and how to aim the arrow. Made sure our safety during the activity was top priority. The Hiking trails were very nice, some points in the trail was definitely a bit dangerous, always hike with a partner when taking the grand view trail. On our way out the Front Desk Manager Christian S. provided an excellent close out, reassuring that we will meet again in the future.

Quick summary: For the price (we ended up paying over $15K at the property for a 5 night stay with room, food and fees) and the supposed 5 star rating, I was really disappointed and will not return with my family. For that amount, the service, the food quality, the upkeep of the rooms, and the supposed family friendly property was just not worth it. The only truly impressive part was the Bell staff/valet. They were consistently friendly, willing to go above and beyond (like vacuuming the car full of sand after our beach day), and we’re efficient and professional. It’s a good thing they are the first you see at the hotel. Long review: I’ll start by saying that my review is geared for families with young children - I’m sure it would be a different experience for couples or business travelers. I spent a ton of time trying to decide which hotel we would select for our first vacation in three years (and our first as a family of four) since we have been very covid conscious and we’re putting our young kids on a plane for the first time. I wanted space for my kids to spread out and play. I wanted a kids pool since my children are not independent swimmers. And I needed a serious break and wanted a hotel versus an Airbnb where someone else would cook and clean and I was willing to pay for the luxury. Fairmont seemed to fit the requirements. - My first issue was despite calling ahead weeks in advance to request a high chair, crib, bed bumpers, and paying extra for the “glamping” kid tent in the room, when we arrived nothing was provided. It actually seemed like our room wasn’t actually ready yet even though they gave us keys because we kept being interrupted by staff just walking in the door to check the mini bar and add towels. Breakdown in communication at the front desk maybe? - The front desk staff wouldn’t let me check in until my husband was there too since the reservation was under his first and last name - though the credit card on the reservation was mine. I do understand this and verification of guests, but he was dealing with the car and bags and I was holding two very cranky kids who had been traveling since 3am. I just didn’t feel like they handled it very well as far as just telling me I needed to go get him or even be semi apologetic until he was present too. Maybe be kinder to the person paying. - the hotel communication system is off. You receive a number to text if you need anything which didn’t get responses for hours. Again the most helpful responses came from valet when they did come through. We also got “your room is ready” emails 24 hours after check in and continued to receive them for a couple days. Minor irritation but something they should correct. The conceirge needed more training or accurate information. We didn’t get any information about the property, a map, or a list of activities at check in (we did notice others did so I think this was likely due to the annoyance by the front desk staff that I tried to check in versus my husband). Therefore we asked elsewhere and the concierge pointed us to activities but didn’t specify age restrictions which led to disappointment from my four year old or that the majority of resort led activities were Friday and Saturday only. She also told my four year old he could feed the horses when we came back and said he was too young to ride but it ended up that he could only watch them being fed. He was too young for archery, bicycles and s’mores were not available except for Fri/Sat. I also tried to book a boat tour and after waiting for about 15 minutes for her to Google search, I gave up and said I would do it myself. I just expected a bit more knowledge on what was available for kids in the area. - The Vista suite was huge. I think they renamed it recently - but it’s the tier 2 suite with a kitchenette and dining table. So square footage was excellent. What was disappointing is that the kitchenette (which I booked because of my young children being incredibly picky and constantly snacking) had a microwave and fridge. There was a ton of cabinet space and a sink but the room had no cutlery, dishes, or even a sponge to wash anything with. It was not useful to pay extra for the kitchenette and we could have saved money with the smaller suite. The furniture was Italian Villa style, but getting to the point of needing replacement with stains on the couches and the carpet ripped in several places and obvious old water leaks in the ceiling. The tub drain also didn’t work so we had to flip to using the tub in our adjoining room (which we booked after the bed fiasco). - We ordered room service the first night because of our exhaustion. It followed a similar menu as to what we had seen at the cafe in regards to breakfast and Amaya for lunch and dinner. Thankfully I was the only one who had chicken because about an hour later, I had awful food poisoning and spent that first night throwing up. I did tell the front desk just in case they had a reporting system if other guests had an issue. They said security would follow up - which they did a full 24 hours later to inquire if I needed some crackers. No I was fine by then. And they removed my food from the bill. - During the food poisoning incident, I was also dealing with where to have everyone sleep. We had two adults, a four year old and a 1 year old, having a suite shouldn’t make this difficult. However, the two sofa beds in the room (there was just one king bed) were completely unusable. Maybe people don’t notice this because they shove their kids on the worst mattress I’ve ever felt? But it was actually my husband who was going to take the sofa bed because my kids cosleep. It was springs with a bar underneath. It was terrible. We called to ask what options there were and the response was that most people just booked two adjoining rooms rather than use the sofa bed. Just invest in a better mattress for $2500 a night!! It came to the point of me trying to sleep on the sofa bed with the baby, because it wouldn’t even hold my husband’s 200 lbs. But with the food poisoning, I started just throwing money into the air in frustration and the night manager gave us one of the basic additional rooms at half price after I said we were leaving and heading to Rancho Valencia instead. - I was really disappointed with the pool. The service was really terrible at the family pools and I often had to go ask for someone to come to the wadding pool side because they never came over most times we were there. Example: some food came in 15 minutes after ordering, but one meal came 50 minutes later even after asking three waiters on status. I also laughed when I saw the size of the wadding pool. It is tiny. Love that it was less than a foot deep but it was the size of a hot ton and the actual hot tub was the size of a postage stamp. Having four small kids in the wadding pool felt incredibly crowded at times. - I should mention tea because it’s the Fairmont. We’ve stayed at properties in Seattle, Toronto, Victoria and always do tea. Despite seeing that we had two young kids and had requested a high chair, they sat us at the couches which made it impossible for the kids not to make a massive mess and it was uncomfortable overall with how awkward it was to have the table so much lower than the chairs the adults had to be at. The food seemed stale and I honestly enjoyed the kid’s tea more that came with pbj and banana Nutella sandwiches. - I can’t comment on the Addison or the Clubhouse Grill because I avoided any of the nicer restaurants knowing my kids make a mess. However Amaya service was pretty terrible. Everyone was kind, but again training or just a general non interest in the job might be to blame? Every time we went it was bad. From waiting 45 minutes for our order to arrive at 9am when there was literally one other person at a table. It felt like they shut down the restaurant with how long it took?! We also learned quickly that the kids under 5 eat free was not the main menu but a comfort menu that you had to ask for and then they always charged you anyway so always had to check the bill. This happened every single time - even though one or my kids is obviously a non walking, non talking baby. I also encourage the hotel to print a kid’s breakfast menu because one doesn’t exist and what we ended up with changed every day based on the waiter. Our last two days, we just ordered ubereats because it was faster and less expensive than the sub par restaurant experience. - I also picked this hotel because of babysitting and the Explorer’s club being available. This is because this postpartum mama really really wanted a spa day. Unfortunately my husband and I decided to skip the spa altogether because of the underwhelming service we received throughout the hotel and the Explorer club experience. We checked out the kid’s club to see what they had and if our kids would enjoy it if we paid for babysitting. It has a variety of activities across age ranges which is nice, but is stuffed deep in what looks like a sad windowless basement. I also thought it was a bit strange that the hotel makes you pay the same price to hang out with your own kids there as they do if you drop off your kids. I would understand if they were paying the staff for leasing kids through activities, but the attendant just sat at the desk in the adjoining room reading a book and never interacted with us. So I decided I didn’t feel confident with the babysitting services advertised and said bye spa day. - positive note: we did appreciate the beach umbrella, towels and chairs valet loaded for us and also pointed us to Del Mar beach and Jake’s restaurant which was a great day and very family friendly. Overall - a hotel that advertises luxury and five star service and accommodations with a massive price tag, but I wish I would have stayed elsewhere. There were too many issues that made it a headache and disappointing for our family vacation. The Fairmont brand has declined in recent years, but this property was quite below expectation. Legoland A+ though if you have young kids.

5 star exterior with 3 star service :( I am so beyond disappointed with this hotel. I've been to Torrey Pines and Waldorf of Astoria this summer and they by FAR exceed this hotel!!! By a MIlE! I travel a lot through work and for pleasure, and this hotel has been the disappointment for a 5-star hotel anywhere I have been :( This $1,000 per night 5 star hotel seems to promise an extravagant luxurious stay, but underneath the surface, is a 3 star experience at best. Beautiful grounds, stunning property from the outside. The spa is beautiful. I booked a few weeks in advance and was called the day before - told there was a scheduling problem - asked to change my time to 9am. Not great since I had a 2.5 hour drive from LA but I said sure. The massage ($250 + 20% gratuity automatically added) was the worst massage I've ever had in my life. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't a Swedish. It was painful, and the masseuse's technique (Matt), was just awful. Honestly, I was cringing the entire time and did tell him to ease the pressure but he was digging into me with his fingers. Apparently he is new there. The afternoon tea is $95 per person (+ $20 fee for ?) just added on (on the receipt it appears as "afternoon tea"). Open table showed loads of availability, but the manager refused to seat me because they were too busy - said to come back two hours later. He kept refusing, even when I booked through open table he would not seat me. His manager came out and explained that of course I could be seated, but the experience would be better if I waited. None of this makes any sense to me. Definitely NOT a 5 star service at $95 for tea. Apparently the restaurant manager is new. I asked for veggie sandwiches only from the waiter when I ordered, but apparently the chef needs 24 hours notice to remove the salmon and chicken and throw out a few more cucumber sandwiches - because they are all "pre-prepared the night before" - (for $95?!) so I said ok, can you just take off the salmon and chicken and I'll eat what's left? The food came out with the salmon anyway. There's one small plate to eat off so your sandwiches end up getting on the same plate with the dessert etc. as someone else said, the bread was not fresh, the food was "okay". in the end, I had two mini sandwiches, a cup of tea, and a mini dessert. $115. No, I'm not joking. I waited so long for someone to come to give me the cheque that I just got up from the scorching hot balcony and asked the waiter for the Cheque. Then came check in. I paid for an upgraded room at the desk with a veranda. Sure, I was told, we have you on the first floor. Turns out the first floor is actually on the ground floor with no veranda. When I enquired, they said they would move me to an upper level floor. I wouldn't have said anything but I paid $200 for a room upgrade because of the veranda. Apparently, they hadn't updated their website to reflect the other kinds of upgraded rooms with lower level patios. I was told a text would be sent when my room was ready. At 4pm, still no room. I went for a swim. They have a lap pool that looked lovely! There was no suntan lotion left at the pool, all empty. Luckily I had brought some. I swam and half way down the lap pool, skidded my knees on the bottom - OMG! It's about 2 feet deep in the middle! And the water is so high you can't see the depth - what the hell??? So, you can't actually swim in the lap pool - you swim, walk, swim. I'm not joking! I saw so many people perplexed by this! Service staff were young or non existent at the pool, too busy, and constantly calling the wrong orders. I got asked so many times if I had ordered this or that - I just left. I went to check-in desk. Where was my room? The one I paid extra for an upgrade?! Check in is at 4pm but I ended up waiting until 4:45pm for my room to be ready. When I got there, the room was lovely! I ran a bath and There were pubic hairs (or something like them) in the tub, with scum marks and the tap just came off. I wanted SO so badly to love this hotel :( I would not recommend the hotel - there are many other great hotels for the same, or even less, price tags with much better service. The waiter who brought my room service was so lovely!!! As was the other waiter in the augora room - so nice! The cocktail was yummy for room service. They have VERY limited veggie options which is really disappointing. The room was nice, and they did give me some credit and discount for my experiences - but honestly, go somewhere else! Lesson learned for me.

This is what happens at a supposed “5 star resort” that has recently turned into a deteriorating wedding factory. Management from the resort comes to my room & informs me that there will be construction outside my terrace at 8:30 am on a Friday morning. The construction involves the covering of a beautiful water fountain outside my room into a small stage. This stage is in advance of a “VIP” wedding that is scheduled for Sunday. Fairmont was very courteous by asking if I wish to change my room and move all my belongings so I’m not “inconvenienced” by the noise. That early evening, Fairmont “security” is now walking back and forth outside my room and other rooms staring into rooms to ensure other lucky guests adjacent to the new stage are not taking pictures of the wedding rehearsal or even just watching it. All this is being done according to Fairmont security for a “VIP” who happens to be an NBA player and is getting married. His wedding is taking place at a resort where I’m sure he has never stayed before, but according to the GDM, f%@& everyone else as this guy and his guests request privacy at the expense of all other non VIP guests like myself. I’m sure he has paid Fairmont handsomely to protect his privacy & to inconvenience the other guests who are unlucky enough to visit the resort this weekend and are now affected by wedding. But for $1000/night, you can’t expect everything? Perhaps you should change the name of the resort to the Grand Del Mar Wedding Hall for VIPs?

I proposed to my now fiancé at the resort a couple of weeks ago, and words cannot describe how amazing this place is. The resort is gorgeous inside and out, and the staff was incredible. Concierge helped me every step of the way in planning the engagement, from figuring out dinner reservations to setting up flowers and reserving a spot to propose. It was my fiance's dream proposal, and it would not have been that way without the beautiful resort grounds and the always patient concierge. Thank you so much Simona and team!
