The night staff tried to throw me on the street for using the wrong spoon. I was only allowed to stay if I never spoke again. I am 55 yrs old and female. And have recently been the victim of a extremely violent crime. This web site wants more it's too personal

I have been a hosteler since 1971. I usually stay at HI hostels (and I highly recommend them over this place), but they were closed due to COVID. I made a reservation for a private room for 7 nights. After two weeks of confirmation emails for the dates I requested, I received an online check-in email which pushed my reservation one night back. Since I was flying in from another country, I had been up since midnight San Diego time and hadn't eaten since 4AM. By the time I got to San Diego, it was 2PM. Whoever wrote the directions on the website failed 6th grade geography. I walked around for some time before I decided to go west instead of east and finally found the hostel. I had to lug my suitcase up a long flight of stairs, and when I got to the reception desk none of the staff nor any of the 'guests' were wearing facemasks. When I questioned this, the staff person got a pained look on his face. It was all downhill from there. I informed him of the inaccurate directions on the website and the changed dates for my reservation. Then, despite showing him my permanent residency card in the country where I live and a pre-printed itinerary for my trip showing my departure back home at the end of my week's stay, he claimed I didin't have sufficient proof that I was an international traveler (they apparently 'pride' themselves on that distinction) and that I didn't live in California. He actually said my US passport says I live there . . . it does not. One's passport states where a person was born, NOT where they live. My permanent US address is in another state, but I left my driver's license home because I didn't plan on driving. Though he ultimately said he believed me, his lack of confidence and inexperience left him defensive and insecure. He used the only power he had in the situation and arbitrarily canceled all but the first night of my reservation. I had made the reservation well in advance to assure me of an affordable place to stay in an expensive city. To be 'generous,' he gave me an extra hour (until noon) to check out the next day. When I left the hostel, I put one of my bags into the locker in the room where I had stayed and put my personal lock on it. I returned at 11:30 to find the door of the room open, my lock missing and my bag gone. I was informed by the 'guy' on staff at that time that the kid from the day before had not told him about the extended time for check out. My bag was returned to me, and to his credit, he did pay me for my busted lock. Fortunately, I was able to find other much, much cleaner and much more comfortable accommodations (including cable TV and a private bath), where COVID safeguards are practiced. It is also in a much more desirable and convenient location, and for not much more than I would have paid at 'Lucky D's.' It turned out that kid did me a favor, especially since I discovered later on the afternoon I checked out that I had multiple bug bites all over my left hip. Probably from bed bugs, but who knows? My advice: stay somewhere else . . . anywhere else.

Great place, helpful and accomodating staff. The rooms and common areas are cleaned daily by the staff and several volunteers. In contrast to other hostels Lucky D has several common rooms that create a social and homely feeling. Best of all, the hostel is centraly located and resonably priced.
