The Hotel Republic San Diego, Autograph Collection garners praise for its efficient service and stylish atmosphere, with a rooftop bar that is a particular highlight for many guests. Its location is lauded for convenience to business venues and the stadium, though nightlife seekers may find it less ideal. While the rooms are generally comfortable, some guests have noted noise issues and dated features. Opinions on value are mixed, with some questioning the price point in relation to quality and parking costs. Amenities receive positive remarks, yet there's room for improvement.

Stayed here for 4 nights over the New Year’s Eve. We booked their Executive Suite, 1 King Corner Room, through Expedia. The room was really large, nice and comfortable, with large bathroom with separate shower and bathtub. We used their gym which was actually really good for both cardio and strength training. We also paid for their Valet Parking with in/out privileges. Since we were exploring outside of the city, we needed the car almost daily, and it was actually working quite ok; we typically didn’t have to wait longer than 20 minutes, and were able to request a car online without the need to leave the room; even if it was busy, the staff were doing their best to bring up your car if they saw you’re waiting for it. The valet staff were also able to suggest cheaper parking nearby but without the in/out privileges, so there is a choice depending on how much you need your car.
The hotel charges a daily destination fee of $25 per room, but it actually is quite alright as it includes free wifi, free bike rentals, a daily yoga at 7:30am, and a daily credit for food and beverages. The trick is to spend that money every day of your stay; we typically used it for a drink or dessert at the lobby bar or at the outside patio/terrace bar. The staff were very good in explaining all of this clearly at check-in to ensure we know how to use this daily fee.
The hotel has a great location. We were able to walk to many places, restaurants (i.e. in Little Italy or Gaslamp Quarter, the waterfront is also a short walk away) within 10-15 minutes each way. Getting an Uber from more distant locations was normally not a problem, and reasonably priced. We were told by one of our drivers that getting Uber on NYE may be close to impossible, to we stayed closer/ within walking distance to the hotel.
With a plethora of great food options, we only had breakfast at the lobby restaurant once - it was a’la carte/menu breakfast with good choices (including for vegetarians and vegans), and it was fresh and tasty with good service.
The only thing I could see improved is to have a small kettle in the room. Being in such nice property and having to flush the horrible Keurig machine a few times before I could boil some hot water for my tea (so that it doesn’t come out all yellow, stinky and with bits of coffee in it) was a bit of a let down.
Other than that we had a really pleasant stay here, and were very glad we chose this property. Would stay here again and recommend to others.

I've stayed here twice and have had the same issues with unclean rooms each time. When I say "unclean" I mean hair EVERYWHERE in the bathroom, stained pillow cases, questionable wall peelings, and more. Having worked in this industry for over 2 decades, I know it starts with leadership. Christian, a manager, did not make me feel welcome the first time and was not as skilled in his role as I would have expected the second time. Yet, there are people here who REALLY understand the nature of service and how to make a guest feel welcomed. Debra, who's knowledge of the hotel's history and keen sense for resolution is exceptional! Rue, who you can tell is genuine and extremely kind! Both Rue and Debra, who work at the front desk) have gone out of their ways and stepped into other roles at the hotel (like cleaning astonishing amounts of hair from the bathroom floors, showers, ceilings, sinks) just to make sure rooms were meeting some level of clean. And then there's Danielle who works in the restaurant portion of the hotel (I think) and anticipated assistance I would need, helped me carry dishes back to my room (team one trip!) and engaged me about my stay. She really cares about the guests and I was very grateful. Overall, it is a beautiful hotel with quirks like limited restaurant hours, valet service that is getting better with delivering vehicles sooner than 20 mins, and the whole destination fee thing. I'd recommend a stay here but anticipate spotty service and lots of ice in your martinis. Without Debra, Rue, and Danielle, this review would have been reviewed as below average.

Great overall stay at the Hotel Republic. The hotel itself is conveniently located downtown, and my room was clean and well maintained. I especially appreciated the window seat and wooden shutters, and it looked like the grout in the bathroom had recently been cleaned/painted.

But the hotel's best asset is its staff. Folks work hard here and sincerely care about their guests. There was a bit of a line to check in when I arrived around 4pm, but Jeff made the wait easy with an apology and offer of free sangria. I didn't catch the name of the person who checked me in (he was wearing ear gauges), but I could tell how hard he was trying to troubleshoot an issue for one of the guests in front of me, and he did a great job of running through all of the hotel amenities and credits I got as a Platinum Elite. Later, when I had an issue connecting to the WiFi (there had been a scheduled power outage in the area that had messed with a lot of hotel's systems that day), he also tried really hard to address the issue. Even though he wasn't able to resolve the problem on his own, his attitude and genuine care made it easy for me to trust him when he said that the hotel's engineering department was working on it (it was fixed by the time I got back from dinner).

The bartenders at Trade were also all fantastic. I much preferred the vibe there than on the patio at Topside (where it seemed like the servers were may overextended, as I waited a couple of minutes for someone to take my drink order before giving up and heading back to Trade).

Valet folks were great as well—didn't catch the name of the person who took my car, but Angel was friendly and efficient when he retrieved my car upon check out.

In short, the staff here made a decent stay great—I hope the hotel management knows what an asset their staff is, and takes care of them accordingly.

It’s hard to sum up the amount of disappointments and annoyances we’ve faced in this establishment!
Executive room in reserved angle. First of all, each guest is forced to pay a convenience fee when we had paid over $400 a night to stay in a room with no executive service. Every morning, the tiny breakfast room is full and you are told, in an authoritative tone, that it takes at least 10 minutes before you can sit down. The pastries are ridiculous and the minimalist buffet unworthy of what you would expect from this category of establishment. Worse, the hostess of the bar on the 2nd floor spoke to us as if we had not booked a table for December 31. The staff is, overall, not at all friendly. Soundproofing is non-existent, you will hear your neighbors take their shower and the incessant noises of the streets (sirens, construction sites, trucks with audible alarms, etc...). Moreover, the cleaning of the room really left something to be desired and it was necessary to ask to change the bed linen of our son and vacuum. The maid decided to come 3 hours later, at 7:00 p.m.??!!
The entrance hall is freezing and without heating. We had a few drinks without dragging on at the risk of getting sick!
This hotel is much less than the amenities you will find in a Hampton Inn and the facilities are ageing (all USB sockets out of order...). Our disappointment was great and we strongly advise you to think before going there...

The staff were amazing. Everyone was warm, kind and attentive. They retained little details like our dog’s name every time he car into the lobby. Room service was very fast.

We would not come back because the walls are paper thin and you can hear every noise, conversation in its entirety, even from the room 3 doors down. The tv in our room wasn’t working, we called for assistance and it never was fixed, but we didn’t bother following up again.

We also apologize for the inconvenience regarding the malfunctioning TV in your room. It's regrettable that we were unable to resolve this issue promptly despite your call for assistance. We just got back from our quick weekend trip in San Diego and we had a great time. The hotel was nice and clean. The staff was friendly. It is in a good location that makes walking anywhere in the city easy. The valet staff at the hotel was very kind and helpful. Christopher, Julian, and Angel were very attentive. They were careful with our vehicle, they helped load our suitcases in our car, they opened doors for us not only for the car, but hotel door as well. It’s nice to see staff that isn’t just there to collect a paycheck. They actually care about the service they provide and the people they’re assisting.

Quick stay as I just needed a place to rest after a late-night arrival. I appreciated the proactive outreach from the hotel prior to my stay. I was able to confirm my mid-night arrival and a 4pm check request was honored.

Room was just as depicted on the website. It was quiet (didn't experience any noise issues that others reported), comfortable bed, good size bathroom. I must admit I was worried that the cut out in the glass shower door would cause water to go everywhere but it didn’t and it was a brilliant idea on how to turn on the shower without getting shocked with cold water.

Lounge is on the second floor with a nice outdoor patio. The food at breakfast was good but it was busy. The attendant was having a hard time keeping up with refilling food, cleaning up and restocking beverages. Stopped in mid-day and was disappointed that the only drinks were sodas and a few bags of chips. Would have like to seen water and fruit as an option.

Location is convenient for walking around San Diego. We walked to the Midway, hopped on the tram to little Italy and back.

It was a comfortable stay and met our needs.

Very mid-level hotel charging high-end rates. The location is great for many business travelers as it is in the business district of downtown, but for leisure travelers it's a bit of a walk to Gaslamp/Little Italy. Over the course of our stay, we encountered almost entirely friendly, but not overly-accommodating staff. So many little moments to go even just a bit above a standard response were met with a shrug. As far as the rooms and property - hallway carpets are pretty disgusting. It's a smaller hotel, so this is not a monumental task - clean the dang carpets! Our room was clean enough, but TV remote barely worked, bathroom soap dispensers didn't work, key cards were a chore....a lot of nit-picks that I could normally ignore, but added together left me feeling, again, like this is a mid-level hotel. Overall, I felt the weekday rates are unjustifiable for the quality of stay. Weekend rates are much lower for a reason (see location note) but still on the higher end for what you get. I likely won't stay again.

This hotel is in the downtown San Diego area adjacent the famed Gaslamp district.
One of the highlights was the charming room with the long wide window seat and the second floor rooftop bar and dining area with fire pits and sofa seating.
Much effort has been made to make this a cozy chic vibe.
The staff was super pleasant but my top kudos go to the 2 young men at the valet stand who were so kind and pleasant. They greeted me with sincere kindness each time I retrieved my car and even helped me load my bags without me asking.
They delivered attentiveness and warmth from the moment I arrived until the moment I left the hotel.
You have two great employees in Alejandro O. And Christopher S.

Overall the staff was amazing and room was great. The front desk staff was always helpful and welcoming. House keeping stayed on top of the room and it was always kept to the highest standards. We were provided with close recommendations for food and places to enjoy ourselves when we were not working .

Josiah with the valet always took great care of my fiancé and I. Never touched a door. Please ensure you give them time to get your vehicle(sometimes it’s not parked the closest).

Answer from foxmusician

I did not see any bike rentals there. The down-side of the hotel is that it's a bit of a walk to get to anything and the neighborhood is quite sketchy at night. We did walk to performances at the civic center hall. But in general, it seems like you really need a car for San Diego.
