We just returned from three nights at the 1863 House. Excellent location, comfortable and colorful home, filling breakfasts with delicious freshly made OJ. . But what makes this place so special are the hosts, Jane and Ben. Lively, friendly, fun, engaged and wonderful folks. Relaxed and open - you really feel like it is a stay with old friends. Now... We had a lovely stay at the 1863 house with Jane and Ben. They were very hospitable hosts helping orientate us to Boston and very helpful with tips of what to see and how to get there. The house is in a beautiful neighbourhood and walking distance to downtown. We were in a lovely room on the third floor, thankfully... More

What a find! The house is full of really tastefully chosen furniture and furnishings. Jane calls it junk - she's being modest; she has a great eye. It's a fabulous house in a convenient location, walking distance from the theatre area and just over a couple of miles from Fenway Park, home of Boston Red Sox. The metro can get... More

I had most enjoyable stay in Jane and Ben's house, with everything I possibly need available. Breakfast, including famous orange juice prepared by Ben early morning, was absolutely perfect and plentiful. Both hosts, Ben and Jane, are very helpful and accommodating. Many thanks to these wonderful hosts!

The home owners were amazing, the fresh squeezed juice each morning was a real treat. The 1863 House was everything I hoped for. This was our last mother, daughter trip before college so I wanted it to be special. Having her first B and B experience in this lovely home with such caring hosts convinced my daughter this is the... More

GREAT alternative to staying in a pricey impersonal hotel room. The owners are personable, helpful, and they will go out of their way to make you feel at home. Only drawback are the number of stairs to the guest rooms (up 2-3 levels from the street), and Boston was going through a heat wave, so my room was very warm... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 day stay in Boston, exploring the sights from this centrally located B&B. We enjoyed our conversations with Jane, the hostess. The accommodation, on the top floor in a well appointed and spacious bedroom with a bathroom shared with another couple more than met our expectations.

The 1863 House was just perfect for what my daughter and I needed. Beautiful, charming old brownstone. It was very warm and inviting; clean, roomy. The 1863 House is a great location in the south end of Boston. Very convenient walk to the Back Bay Station, Copley Square, Prudential Center. Safe, charming neighborhood. Our hosts, Ben and Jane, were so... More

I've been there for three days. The house is really lovely, furnished with a great taste for particulars. My room was big and full of light. The restroom was shared with a couple but I never saw them and was always very clean. The landlords were really perfect, friendly but never annoying at all. Breakfast was good, with some muffins... I spent a most comfortable four nights with Jane and Ben in early December 2014. They are the most engaging hosts I've encountered in many years of traveling. I arrived on a snowy Friday evening; over tea, we launched into a conversation which continued throughout the duration of my stay! They have lived in the area for many years, and... More

Staying in South End

Neighborhood Profile
South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.
