We stayed here for 3 nights on a girls trip. It was okay but I can't say I would do it again. The staff was great and super helpful anytime we asked they for anything. The lobby area has been updated but the guest floors definitely could use some TLC. We had not noticed there is no AC (a mistake... More

We choose this hostel for our stay in Boston, really nice place to stay, location is amazing, it is good for the price, there is a lot of options for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it has a 7 eleven close by wich let you find anything 24 hr.

It was like stepping back into a time machine to the 1970s, like an old derelict high school. The building is quite dirty and dusty, no air-con either so extremely hot in the Boston summer. Staff seemed dismissive and slightly cold - we chose this as we were travelling on a budget and everywhere was either booked plus Boston is... More

It was quite expensive (maybe 'cause a book it one day prior to arrival...) but the location was great and it was very very clean. It was very basic and, let's say "vintage" style! (hahahah) but it was enough for me. The staff was friendly and they have a lovely patio where to sit and relax. The WiFi worked perfectly!!!

Staff was super friendly, a very interesting mix of people staying here - the shared bathrooms might take some getting used to for some. The rooms are spare, but had a whole wall of windows making the view pretty great. This place is not for everybody - we liked it, but if you're used to plush accommodations, you may not... More

Got a single room/shared bath in Boston summer and its price/service ratio just was not what I was expecting.. good location though easy walk to metro and get around downtown, breakfast was decent so no complains there

After a whole ordeal with our previous hotel having mice, it was a relief to come and check in to your hotel. The staff is extremely nice and willing to help whenever they can. Very polite. The only thing we didn't like was in our room was no air conditioner and the bathrooms were shared by the entire floor. The... More

I'm still wondering if this hotel, is an actual hotel or a rehabilitated hospital. On my floor, one of the two showers had some sort of dog feces in the shower. Due no A/C in the rooms, the temperature in the room (in the summer) are infernal specially if you are on the top floor (7th). I definitely not recommend... More

I'm the least picky traveler, but this place is pushing it. This place is definitely overpriced being $120 a night for a two single bed private room of this quality, w/ communal bathroom/showers. But it is still one of the cheapest in Boston, which is nice. Overall, sheets and towels were clean, although the room was old, to say the... More

Staying in South End

Neighborhood Profile
South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in Boston's historic South End within easy walking distance of Copley Square, Back Bay and downtown Boston, 40 Berkeley offers an unbeatable value for budget-minded travelers. Our 168 private guest rooms are an appealing alternative to Boston's high-priced hotel rooms. All have either a shared or private bathroom and many have spectacular views of Boston's skyline. The hotel's elegant main lobby and public spaces recall the building's storied history as the country's first YWCA. In addition to its dramatic interiors, the hotel has a lovely private patio garden where guests gather in the warmer months for socializing and impromptu events. ... more   less
