It was average - not bad for the price but wasn't the best stay I've had. The shared rooms were very small - only room for two small single beds and a shelving unit. Beds weren't particularly comfy but were fine for a short stay. There was a movie room with free popcorn and coffee making facilities which was great.... More

Pros: friendly and helpful staff, good facilities (washing machines, dryers, tv etc), everywhere seemed clean. Cons: rooms are very hot with no air con and are a little bit run down. Thank you to all the staff for providing us with a pleasant stay.

I paid around $120 for a private room per night and ended up staying for two. That was the cheapest deal I could find for a last minute stay in Boston. Yet despite being the cheapest in the area, I really don't think that justifies the price. So upon arriving I laced my way down the yellowing corridor towards my... More

The rooms are very dorm like and there is a community shower. It is pretty cheap, pretty close to the city, and literally just good enough. It was a bed, a shower, and a roof over our heads. Bare minimum here.

I read some of the reviews and was a little cautious to book this place. But everythint else was so much more expensive so we stuck with it and I am glad we did. The lobby space is so comfortable and inviting, with great complimentary coffee avaliable during the day. The private rooms are relatively spacious with desk and cupboard.... More

Horrible rooms and bathrooms. I don't mind to share baths but when they are prepared for a lot of people... Only one shower for my floor, and very very old... Very noise rooms due to the "paper" windows... Locations is good, but I would prefer other place even if further....

We spent two nights at this hotel. The location was good (although no subway nearby) and so was the staff - the receptionist Adam is nice and funny guy. You will be REALLY ensured you are ALL SET! :)) The room was okay, however there was no AC and during our visit it was very hot, so obviously the room... More

Staying in South End

Neighborhood Profile
South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in Boston's historic South End within easy walking distance of Copley Square, Back Bay and downtown Boston, 40 Berkeley offers an unbeatable value for budget-minded travelers. Our 168 private guest rooms are an appealing alternative to Boston's high-priced hotel rooms. All have either a shared or private bathroom and many have spectacular views of Boston's skyline. The hotel's elegant main lobby and public spaces recall the building's storied history as the country's first YWCA. In addition to its dramatic interiors, the hotel has a lovely private patio garden where guests gather in the warmer months for socializing and impromptu events. ... more   less
