Firstly, the location for this hostel is very good however, travelling with a large party of 10 we found it very difficult to check- in smoothly. The receptionists were very direct and lacked basic customer service skills, they didn't really seem to want to help with our confusion about pre- authorisation/ deposit for the room. On a positive note, this... More

Where to begin... The fact I am lying in my bed on the last of three nights and the app couldn't highlight it as my nearest hotel tells you everything to know about this place. Yes it's a hostel but at these prices you would think given the site pictures you would think maybe it's not that bad. Two single... More

We picked this hostel for its central location, which was extremely useful. You can walk to many attractions and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. The neighbourhood is very pleasant. The rooms are basic, but everything is kept clean and we were pleased overall. It's an excellent way to visit Boston on a budget.

Room was like a prison cell... just enough room for 2 spring beds, beds were uncomfortable and small, plain, hot with no AC. V expensive for what it was. Would never stay again. Moderately good location.

It costs a lot of money to stay in a place that is so run down and smells like a bad hospital ward. The location is convenient for transport links (buses, metro & Amtrak) and is in a nice part of town with friendly stand. However the damp smells with bleach overtones do not make up for this.

It was average - not bad for the price but wasn't the best stay I've had. The shared rooms were very small - only room for two small single beds and a shelving unit. Beds weren't particularly comfy but were fine for a short stay. There was a movie room with free popcorn and coffee making facilities which was great.... More

Pros: friendly and helpful staff, good facilities (washing machines, dryers, tv etc), everywhere seemed clean. Cons: rooms are very hot with no air con and are a little bit run down. Thank you to all the staff for providing us with a pleasant stay.

Staying in South End

Neighborhood Profile
South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in Boston's historic South End within easy walking distance of Copley Square, Back Bay and downtown Boston, 40 Berkeley offers an unbeatable value for budget-minded travelers. Our 168 private guest rooms are an appealing alternative to Boston's high-priced hotel rooms. All have either a shared or private bathroom and many have spectacular views of Boston's skyline. The hotel's elegant main lobby and public spaces recall the building's storied history as the country's first YWCA. In addition to its dramatic interiors, the hotel has a lovely private patio garden where guests gather in the warmer months for socializing and impromptu events. ... more   less
