My wife was terrified because of the movie hostel (and thoughts of kids in sleeping bags). Thankfully, the house was great, clean, and what a perfect location. We could walk to just about any downtown venue despite recent knee surgery. They have make your own pancakes in the kitchen so a B&B it's not. It was just a great place for a great price. I would definitely stay again. Wife was happy too, and we are still married.

Any time a social situation with a new person becomes a bit awkward, cold, or contentious, I find it's always best to ask oneself "how might have I contributed to this?" and see what you might do to reestablish the simple kindness and politeness that facilitates most interactions, while maintaining integrity. Whether waiter or diner, businesswoman or janitor, hostel worker or guest: regardless of the nature of the interaction, there's some layer of basic human decency that one would hope unites us all. But alas - once in a rare occasion - one encounters a person who just seems unhappy unless they've willfully frustrated others. It may be that this person is unaware of the more jagged edges of their character or doesn't care about how others feel... or, it could be more sinister: the type that seems to delight in turning simple, kind exchanges into confrontations, perhaps to savor the schadenfreude and congratulate themselves for being right about everything. "BJ" is one of these people. The other one star reviews echo as if spoken aloud at self-help session that my should-have-been-good weekend attended after encountering BJ. That's not say that one called rude is necessarily a rude person, or that we all haven't been at least a bit rude at times ourselves. Yet, be warned: human hospitality is but a starved form behind wrought iron bars of rules, cemented in pedantry and self-righteousness, in the brightly-colored cells of BJ's Hostile Guest House. It's cheap! But be prepared to feel cheapened.

Huh? Sounds like you don't like me for some reason, but have you stayed with us? When did you stay here, and specifically what happened? How does "passive aggressive" relate to an individual situation that you experienced? "pas·sive-ag·gres·sive adjective of or denoting a type of behavior or personality characterized by indirect resistance to the demands of others and an avoidance of direct confrontation, as in procrastinating, pouting, or misplacing important materials." I'm also not sure what to do with "bit awkward, cold, contentious, or felt cheapened" Can you help readers by being specific, so that I'm provided an opportunity to respond to specific situations, and not feeling words? Thanks, BJ

My partner and I love this place and stay every time we are in Asheville. The location is perfect, only a 5 minute walk to downtown, the rooms are clean (but simple), and the price is great. Parking on the street is usually pretty easy.

We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It certainly has the feel of a hostel, but our room - as well as the rest of the house - was clean. The beauty of this hostel is the price and the location. Only a couple of blocks from the center of downtown, we were able to walk to everything. I would recommend this to travelers looking for a clean space in a convenient location at a good price.

My adult daughter and I booked a room for 4 nights but we left after 1. BJ was not only rude but strange. He was hostile from the moment we arrived. We had a friend visiting Asheville at the same time. We respected the rule that she was not allowed to enter the building. BJ changed the rule mid-stay to say she could not sit with us in the yard. To be very clear, we were not drinking,we were not loud, we were sitting. He then put on headphones and would not acknowledge me when I went to speak to him. He walked away and locked himself into one it the bedrooms. I was not yelling, I was not raising my voice at all, I was just going to inform him that we were leaving. I reviewed the rules carefully before booking. We were not breaking any. He changed a rule on a controlling whim and did not even attempt to be polite. I have stayed at hostels previously and have never seen one run by someone so ill mannered and miserable. If you have any choice at all, stay somewhere else.

Rude and weird is a good heading for this review. As I always say, guests review themselves. Thankfully, our guests have traditionally been amazing. So this is a very rude and weird review to bother responding to. Someone is desperate for attention, so the takeaway is this: If the terms say 18-40 for 2 guests, don't show up with 2 -13yr old guests, and an over 40 guest who acts 13. Don't call the day before asking if it's okay that you to be over 40 while not mentioning the other extra under 13 guests. Stop lying about everything else. If any guests wants to talk to me about this review, feel free. We always take care of any problem directly with guests, or joke about the idiots who write this sort of nonsense. If you think that Deana H makes sense, and you can relate to her. Do yourself a favor, and stay anywhere else. The rest of you, you know what's up. And thank you for being our great guests who get it before showing up.
