Detailed Reviews
The Sourwood Inn is awesome in every way. The building itself is outstanding and Proal, Connie and the entire hard working staff are dedicated to making your stay the best it can be.
Our family of five, husband and wife, two adult sons and one adult daughter in law recently spent three wonderful nights at the Inn. Each had great things to say about the comfort of their rooms. My husband uses a manual wheelchair and our room, #3, was very large and the shower was accessible. The whole main level of the Inn allowed him the freedom to access all the many gathering rooms as well as the wonderful screened in porch. We enjoyed three amazing breakfast and one dinner at the Inn. The new chef, Casey, did an amazing job in preparing our dinner steaks to our individual wishes.
From our first friendly welcome from Cindy to our last goodbyes to Crystal and Connie and everything in-between all was perfection. Thank you everyone for helping make our mini family get together so enjoyable.

I visiting Sourwood Inn for the first time and had a "mini" reunion with my best friend and her husband. We stayed in two beautiful rooms and felt immediately at peace with our mountain views, relaxing bathtubs, and sweet balconies. We were able to dine at the inn for a delicious dinner and wine on the first night, and ventured out to take a hike at a spot only a mile or so from the inn. We were also impressed the next morning to hike on the walk that was available right on the inn grounds - about 1.5 miles of natural forest, ferns and a pond. The inn also provided a great-sized breakfast each morning and a later afternoon appetizer. This was just the experience I was looking for - to be close to Asheville and all that it offers, along with feeling "away" and in the mountains. I cannot wait to return in fall! As a side note: although we visiting during COVID, we found the people who worked at the inn to be sensitive to cleanliness, face coverings, etc. I will definitely return!

This is by far the best B&B experience we have had, anywhere, ever. The staff treats guests like family, and the breakfast, snacks, dinner, and wine selection are all outstanding. The inn is so charmingly small, spotlessly clean, and well-ventilated (all the windows and doors have screens and were open the entire 5 days of our stay) that it felt as safe as being at home. Do yourself a favor and walk the trail around the 100 acre property during your visit and/or go on a hike or two off the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. This part of the country is just gorgeous.

Hmmmm! Where do I start! If you are looking for peaceful and relaxing then this is it! I love places that DO NOT have televisions in their rooms! That was the first of many positives! The photos on the website really don't do the inn justice. Every room is unique to itself. We stayed in Room 7 the first night and then moved to room 12 for the remainder of our stay. Room 12 was bigger and a tad bit nicer. It also had a nice view. But room 7 definitely had the better view. The photos with the roof showing are views from room 12. The others are views from room 7. We had breakfast at the inn each morning. Breakfast is included in your stay. The breakfast dishes were delicious! And they were different each of the 4 mornings of our stay. I'm not a pancake eater and I had two one morning! Most mornings you will find at least one item that's unique! On Wednesday nights the restaurant does a $20 dish for dinner. The Wednesday night that we were there the owner cooked lasagna! It was delicious! The other nights they served a plated meal for $45 per person. This included an appetizer, entree, and dessert. They also serve wine and beer. Two nights that we were there the storms came through and knocked the power out. This didn't bother me at all. I mean afterall we were there to decompress. The owner provided everyone with a small lantern for their room. I had a good book and a bottle of wine or two! So who needed power! They were still able to prepare a nice breakfast and the water in the shower remained nice and hot! Some have made post advising not to arrive at the inn at night because of the long drive up the mountain and then the long drive to the inn. It's doable. Just drive real slow! We went to late night dinners in the city on two of our 4 nights. We had no problems returning to the inn at night. But we did see deer! So be on the lookout! Ok. I've said enough! In summary- I love this inn and I'm looking forward to returning!

"old fashioned"inn in a beautiful, private location with mountain views. Many places to meet with friends, such as outdoor dining or quiet library. Very friendly staff and excellent food. The bathroom had a walk in shower and large soaking tub which looked out onto the mountain view. Our room had a wood burning fireplace and the staff would lay the fire each night.

We stayed here for the first time during a recent tour of the western NC mountains. Our original plan was to stay three nights but we were so relaxed that they accommodated us when we asked to add a fourth night. Honestly we could have stayed here all nine nights we were so happy. It is a beautiful inn on beautiful property located very conveniently between Asheville and many of the attractions of the Blue Ridge Pkwy. The owners and staff were very pleasant and laid back, the rooms were very comfortable, the furnishings were beautiful and the fireplace in the main room was warm and inviting. It is the perfect spot when you want to relax. Running into town is a bit of an effort (it is on top of a mountain) but is doable. And there are a couple of hiking trails on property that are wonderful. And be sure to eat their dinner while here. For one thing, it’s nice to not do the drive at night, and for another it was excellent. And ask the owner for wine suggestions! They have an excellent wine selection. We really look forward to visiting again and staying an entire week!!

Get onto the parkway from busy Ashville, and a few miles later you are in a different world. The Sourwood Inn is conveniently located near Ashville, but its location on Elk Mountain, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, which feels like you are in a very remote mountain lodge. The lodge is surrounded by trees, flowers and the sounds of birds. Walking trails are right out your door if you need to stretch out your legs and see some nature. We stayed at the lodge in room 11, which has a private balcony, king bed, room fridge, shower and tub and fire place. Room fire places are not used in the summer but we did enjoy a fire during our meal on the patio one night. We had breakfast and supper at the inn and both were delicious. Breakfast is self serve buffet style, but the items are all freshly prepared home cooked food, including bacon, eggs, French toast, yogurt, fruit, and other items. They have a great selection of wine and beer to go with your dinner. The menu is limited and is predetermined for the month. There are a few options for your starters such as a choice between grilled shrimp or a salad. After dinner, we played a few games of pool and ping pong downstairs. Connie and Proal, who run/own the inn are very personable and went to great lengths to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Love this place and hope to return in the future.
We also took advantage of their partnership with Curtis Wright Outfitters for a fly fishing, half day, trip. We had fun and had a great guide named Kenny. Just a word of caution, we had to drive one hour to get to our fishing location in Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard.

Chris, thank you for this great review, and so glad you had a great stay at our mountain lodge. We love to hear when guests enjoy our peaceful location, and as you said, you sometimes think you are many miles away from civilization- when Asheville is just a short drive away. After staying in hotels for two straight weeks on our trip home to Maine from Florida, we splurged a bit for a two night stay at the Sourwood Inn. Wow, what a delight! From the moment we checked in with Connie (owner with husband Proal), we felt pampered and relaxed. Beautiful room and beautiful common areas throughout the property. We had wood fires each night (in the library, back patio and our room) which were all set up with “fire kits” (paper and kindling) for easy starting. Chef Casey prepared a wonderful blackened grouper entree and came to our table to make sure all was cooked perfectly, which it was! Proal helped us pick the perfect selection from their wonderfully curated wine list. Our breakfast each morning was over-the-top! The entire property is secluded and extremely quiet…no white noise required! Can’t say enough about our experience…we will surely return for a longer stay in the future and enjoy more of what makes Asheville and the Sourwood Inn a “must see” destination. Cheers!

We have stayed at the Sourwood many times over the last dozen years. Happy to say that the new owners, Connie and Proal, have done a great job carrying on the tradition. The decor and views are still lovely, and the food is spot-on. They are also doing a fine job of practicing social distancing, having folks wear masks, and offering safe housekeeping. We'll definitely come back!

We celebrated a BIG birthday weekend at the Sourwood Inn. The rooms, dining and property exceeded all expectations. The service was incredibly friendly and accommodating on all fronts.
The rooms and beds were comfortable and clean. The balcony looked out over the tree canopy and over the valley to the ridge line for beautiful sunrises. The bathrooms were updated with big tub and shower with a picture window that gave the feeling of being out in the forest. We loved the hiking trails that looped through the 100 acres. The whole weekend was relaxing and serene. We will definitely visit again soon.

As other guests have already mentioned, we don't have TV's in the rooms. We do have a large screen TV in one of our communal rooms that we call the Game Room, where we also have pool, ping pong, darts and other board games. We have recently added Wifi at the Inn as well. We have data points in all of the common areas, but the range of the signal reach most all of the rooms as well.
Let us know if you have other questions. Thanks for your interest, Connie and Proal
Hi,
We have recently installed internet/WiFi in all common areas of the Inn!
All rooms have showers in addition to large soaking tubs.
Thanks, Proal Perry
Hi and thank you for your interest in Sourwood. We only allow children 12 and older, either in the inn or in the Sassafras Cabin. I am not sure how old your children are, but a call might be in order.
Hello and thank you for your interest in visiting Sourwood. You are correct that we have limited cell phone coverage. Verizon gets excellent coverage, while all other are spotty at best. There is a land line in all rooms. There is also someone living here, so calls can be connected at all times.
As to the heat, we have hydronic base board heat which works very efficiently. You are not dependent on the fireplace for heat, only ambiance:)
As for your 11 month old child, I am sorry but we have a 12 year old child policy. I hope you can try us another time.
Thank you,
Susan Curtis
