We camped in a walk-in only site for 3 nights in July. As long as you are prepared (mentally and physically) for the walk, it's not too far; the only annoying part is having to bring all your food back to the car at the end of the night, as you don't want to attract horses. It rained two nights,... More

Nice campsite, Oceanside #71. While it is a short walk to the beach, it is on a grassy area protected on both sides with shrubs. I think #71 is the best as we had both morning shade and late afternoon shade...a rare thing on the beach. It had rained the evening before we arrived. This campsite seems it would have... More

Spent 3 nights here, wasn't impressed. Arrived and power for entire park was out, so no water for showers. Went to bed soaking with sweat due to oppressive heat and invasion of mosquito's immediately after sun when down. I have no issues with boondocking, (RV camping without power/water)... and I also fully understand how annoying a loud generator can be... More

I read everything I could about camping here, before we headed to Assateague. But, I wish I had known this about the campsite (61): be prepared to walk really far from your car to the campsite. There is a boardwalk that makes rolling items in the wagon much easier (DO absolutely bring a sports wagon!), but the sand is deep... More

We spent two nights camping at the National Seashore and were impressed with the natural beauty along with the large shore area with a minimal number of people. Watching the horses roam the area added to the experience as my children loved seeing them. The sunsets were gorgeous and the place was peaceful. Campers should be aware there is no... More

It was amazing to be able to see the wild horses. The beach was very clean and lots of fun had by the kids. If you plan to go I recommend some sort of shade device as there is none. Drive around the park and see what's there it is an experience the kids won't forget

Pristine shoreline. Pre sseason and rai. Made for a deserted park. Have been here before, and foun it disconcerting to see people lying on blankets in swimsuits with wild ponies running up and down the beach. There were 2 ponies total. No people.

Assateague Island's campground provides the unique experience of camping with the waves and wild ponies. The soft ground makes for a comfortable experiences, but the lack of high ground, shade, and wild resistance can make a rainy trip quite unpleasant. Be careful to follow all the rules, including not touching the ponies. The US Park Rangers are not afraid to... More

After initialing booking a walk-in campsite on the beach (95) during a forecast of wind and light rains, we had barely started setting up before going back to the ranger station and asking for a more desirable spot. It was incredibly windy and wet (not rain, but a sort of never-ending mist) and it would have really hampered our trip.... More

I'd read reviews but was not prepared for cooking in the high wind situation, so this is the warning I wish I'd had. We came in mid-April, sunny weather high '50s, about 40F at night -- but super windy. I had reserved an oceanside campsite I thought would be a little bit protected (one layer off beach) but they re-numbered... More
