My family and I have gone beach camping on Assateague Island every summer for the past 7 years, and every year, we bring more friends with us. The National campsites are much better and cleaner than the State Campsites. If you come prepared for the strong sun and horseflies with ample shade and bug repellent, you will have a great... More

Camping here is super rustic. Cold water showers and port o potties. Campsites are far from the parking and you have to tow your gear through the sand. Furthermore, there is every type of biting insect imaginable, including flies that bite through your clothes! If you're prepared for all this, you will have a great time. If you don't want... More

My son and his family went down Wednesday and put up their tent, got all set up. The complaints on here are right on. They were in the walk-in oceanside area. The mosquitoes and horseflies put everyone in misery. They had two bottles of maximum strength DEET, didn't make a difference. They weathered a storm that night, and some people... More

This was my fourth camping trip, and longest (6 days). There's no shade so bring your own, and plenty of SPF and bug spray. Can't stress bug spray enough, though dry windy weather keeps them at bay. So much beauty and wildlife to appreciate, just make sure your gear is in order. It can be very windy and thunderstorms are... More

We were not planning on camping or swimming on the beach, mainly looking to view the horses and hike some trails. We made a mistake by paying at the state park. We soon realized the national seashore is farther down the road and we had to pay another $20. We drove around and hiked 2 of the 3 trails. We... More

We stayed in May in a 31 foot motor home. Bathhouses were pit toilets that smelled. I looked down the hole and was expecting to see the guy from the x-files come up and get me. It made me so happy to have my own bathroom and shower so I can stay in beautiful places like this with no discomfort.... More

Assateague Island has been a favorite of our family for years. This is the most outstanding place to see the sun set over the bay! Just stunning! If you are looking to see the ponies, early morning or closer to dinner time as they wonder close to the campsites in hopes to find food. Please don't approach as they are... More

My family and I heard about this island from my wife's cousin. We tent camped on the bay side. It was gorgeous! "The horses are bears without claws" is what the Ranger told me. She wasn't wrong! Make sure you pack your food away in your vehicle. We tent camped. It was hot! The scenery is amazing. If you don't... More

We camped in a walk-in only site for 3 nights in July. As long as you are prepared (mentally and physically) for the walk, it's not too far; the only annoying part is having to bring all your food back to the car at the end of the night, as you don't want to attract horses. It rained two nights,... More

Nice campsite, Oceanside #71. While it is a short walk to the beach, it is on a grassy area protected on both sides with shrubs. I think #71 is the best as we had both morning shade and late afternoon shade...a rare thing on the beach. It had rained the evening before we arrived. This campsite seems it would have... More
