The Inn at Union Square garners accolades for its exceptionally friendly staff and its prime, yet tranquil, downtown location that puts guests within easy reach of local attractions. The hotel's atmosphere is frequently described as comfortable and inviting, with clean and well-maintained rooms; however, some guests have noted the absence of air conditioning and picturesque views.
While cleanliness receives high marks, and the amenities are generally appreciated, the limited breakfast and additional fees have been points of contention for those seeking more value.

Detailed Reviews
We loved our stay at The Inn at Union Square - fantastic central location next to Union Square with easy access to shopping district, cable cars and street cars. The accommodation - a small lounge area with separate bedroom and bathroom, were very clean and well furnished, the continental breakfast each morning was fresh and generous and the added extras of wine and cheese each evening, access to tea and coffee and fruit during the day and evening, plus homemade biscuits at night, were real treats. It was great to chat with other travellers from different countries over a glass of wine/cool drink after a day's sightseeing before heading out for dinner. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. We certainly recommend this hotel to other travellers and would certainly stay here again.l

We stayed for 4 nights. We actually had planned to stay 3, but loved it so much that we extended our stay. We stayed in a King room which had a fireplace and was a bit bigger. There were lots of little touches that made this hotel quite special. The wine and cheese hour is lovely and is done well. There is a turn down service every day. Staff are really friendly and helpful. Peet's coffee and tea is left out for sleepy heads like us who didn't make it to breakfast everyday. Cookie jars with fresh bakes are put out in the evening. Most of all, the location is just stellar, and I think the value of this place when you consider the central location is exceptional. We will undoubtedly be back.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
My wife and I have been staying at the Inn since 1992, five or six visits total. Obviously liked the place very much given our returns. Under the new ownership, if our two-night stay in early February 2020 is representative, the hotel could use some improvement. We were told we were given one of the best rooms in the hotel, but it turned out to be a second floor room next to the room used to serve all hotel guests breakfast, and thus quite noisy early each morning. And the hotel housekeepers "forgot" to make up our room the entire second day of our visit - and the hotel management barely apologized. But it's still a very nice small hotel, comfortable, and perfectly located in SF, just steps from Union Square with the entire city accessible by taxi, Uber or cable car. We'll look carefully at reviews before our next visit, and if we see multiple reviews similar to our recent experience, we'll probably take a pass. Even with the failures, still rating it 4/5.

Dearest scl714, I am truly sorry to read of your recent experience at our lovely little Inn! Although we adore and thrive on our accolades it is commentary such as yours that helps us to improve.. Your experience was very much the exception and not the rule as far as not having your room made... we do make up rooms until 5pm which can be quite difficult for some our our guests but not having your room made a all is just dreadful, and then for our response when the issues was brought to our attention, this concerns me greatly. As a result, I would so like to learn more so that I an research, take appropriate action, and enhance the overall experience for you and future guests of the Hotel. Would you be so kind as either telephone me at 415.297.3510 or email me at amock@unionsquare.com so we can discuss in greater detail? With gratitude for your year of patronage for sharing your experience, Ann

We stayed here for 3 nights in room 501 which had a separate bedroom and living room with a bathroom in between. It was spacious, clean and comfortably furnished. The front looked on to Post St but the room was exceptionally quiet and from the bedroom at the rear not a sound could be heard from outside. The bed was super comfortable and the whole place wa spotless.
The complimentary breakfast was good with a selection of pastries, cereals, yoghurt, boiled eggs etc and we made good use of the complimentary wine and cheese happy hour at 5.30 each evening.
Without exception the staff were extremely helpful and this being our first visit to SF in 25 years we were very grateful to them. Without having to refer to maps etc they knew bus routes, numbers, places to go etc and they could not have been nicer or more friendly. We will definitely stay here Gaga in when in SF.

We come to San Francisco to visit our daughter who like many San Franciscans has no room for guests. The hotel where we usually stay added an "urban amenity fee" rather than charging an honest price so we decided to try some place new. We loved the Inn at Union Square. The room was clean, well-appointed and quiet and larger than what we are used to for a city hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was tasty and the coffee was good. The location was walking distance from the BART and SFMOMA (a favorite museum). We have a new base of operations for our trips to San Francisco.

I was in San Francisco for a conference and was very happy with my stay her at the Inn. The room was very cozy and comfy, bathroom spotless and I just loved the plushy robes. I felt almost like I was home, as I walked downstairs to get tea in the evening (they have tea, coffee and cookies out) in my slippers or stocking feet, and the place felt more like a bnb than a hotel.
I would definitely stay here again.

We flew in and the inn is one block from train station so really easy to get to.
It is like an upscale bed and breakfast.
We had small lounge in our suite and huge bed.
Each floor had a little sitting room
Coffee and tea on 2nd floor
On afternoon tasty cookies are put out.
Free breakfast is simple but perfect
Staff super friendly
Highly recommend

A beautiful boutique hotel with ultra clean furnishings and beautiful appointments in our upgraded room. The king size bed was extremely comfortable, the walk in shower powerful and the lithographs and pages from the Georgetown University Hoya Newspaper gave the facility a sense of quiet grace.
Jorge and the guest staff could not have been more accommodating.

Overall, this could be a really great place to stay. They just missed on some little things that were really frustrating. It has a great location, is very clean and quiet. The room itself was beautiful and comfortable. But, I was very frustrated that we were not told they weren’t offering breakfast or their reception in the evening until we arrived. I know the website said some services were limited because of Covid but I didn’t realize that limited actually meant non existent. On day 3 of our stay we asked for someone to come make up the room but they only half did it. The bed was never made and the bathroom wasn’t cleaned. Upon checkout, I mentioned my disappointment and was told then that they were only cleaning rooms on request. Again, would have been nice to know at check-in. Finally, it is important to know that this hotel has no air conditioning. Normally it wouldn’t be an issue but it was 93 degrees our first day in San Francisco. Trying to sleep that night was miserable even with the windows open and the ceiling fan on full blast.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Inn at Union Square. We didn’t want to leave! This boutique hotel has such a homey feel to it, we almost felt like locals staying in our own apartment. Check-in/check-out was easy and we felt very safe in this location. Our room was in great condition and was clean upon arrival. I also appreciated that housekeeping visited during the day while we were out. One thing to note is that this hotel does not have air conditioning, however, we were able to crack the windows at night to allow a cool breeze in. Even in August, San Francisco temperatures would drop down into the upper 50’s at night. So, our room stayed cool and we slept well. We will definitely be back! Highly recommend.
