The Donatello garners praise for its excellent value, with its advantageous location near public transport and affordable amenities. Guests enjoy the hotel's lively atmosphere, complete with live jazz and chic rooms, although some have noted the windows could use updating. The staff receives accolades for their warmth and efficiency, even as a few guests encountered service hiccups. Cleanliness is a strong suit, with most areas kept immaculate, though rare cleaning oversights in rooms are mentioned. While the accommodations are generally spacious and cozy, noise can sometimes be an issue, and there have been comments about the cleaning service and room availability for late arrivals. The hotel's strategic position is a boon for those looking to explore the shopping and dining scene around Union Square, yet some suggest caution due to the nearby Tenderloin district. Amenities, including the impressive concierge, gym, and the rooftop terrace with its complimentary perks and entertainment, contribute to a satisfying stay.

We stayed here using time share points and it was a pleasant surprise! The location is just one block off of Union Square and The Mark Hopkins Hotel on Russian Hill is a short walk ( uphill ). Parking rates are the best in the city from our experience- $ 50/ day vs. $75/day . There is a very nice atrium on the roof, fitness center and hot tub along with gender specific locker rooms. The room was clean, quiet and the entire hotel has been recently renovated. Each room has an independent heat/air conditioning unit with useable controls. Due to Covid house keeping was on request and at additional cost $130/time, however, you can request items like towels, coffee, soap, etc from the desk and get a quick response.
The on site restaurant, Zingari, is EXCELLENT and has a section with live jazz nightly!! I highly recommend this hotel.

The building may be old but the rooms are very contemporary with modern amenities for today's needs. The Chromcast on the TV is a welcome relief from the usual directv, dishnetwork, comcast, etc, which has so many channels showing but only 80% is really usable.

The bed and pillows are very comfortable.
No pool but there's a spa. That's ok. We are there to explore the City anyways.

The staff are extremely courteous and friendly. Thanks to the bag storage service (Joe) for making our time worthwhile while waiting for the room to be cleaned.

I'd like to point out that after our stay, our reservation did indicate our room was for 4 people. However, the actual room we got could only fit 3. Good thing the fourth member of our family did make it for this vacation.

The room has a large bed and a twin-sized sofa bed.

There's a small kitchen with a sink, a refrigerator and a microwave.

The bathroom is quite nice. I just hope management would consider installing exhaust fans to help eliminate the mist after a hot shower.

Zingari Ristorante Jazz Bar is located just at the mezzanine of the resort/hotel. We didn't eat there but would be when we return in the future.

Parking is $50 at the property for valet with in-out privileges.

We didn't drive our car for this stay as we wanted to explore the City by public transportation.

I love the purified water dispenser at the lobby for guests with drinking bottles.

We enjoyed our stay at The Donatello this past week. Zenaida was very helpful concierge and was attentive in setting up our in-rooms massage and setting up housekeeping to clean our room and getting us an extra chair and coffee when we needed it.

Tuya and Marlon were the ones who came to our room for our couple’s massage and they did an excellent job in ensuring that we were comfortable, which helped melt our stress away.

Krishan, the owner of the Zingari Ristorante, brought us our room service orders most days. He was very attentive and did an excellent job in making sure our orders were exactly what we asked for. He is also a great conversationalist. :) He even had the jazz band play ‘Happy Birthday’ for us the night me and my husband at at the restaurant and gave him a free dessert. His son, Neeraj, was also nice enough to take our order and bring it to us on the days that Krishan was not available.

We are looking to come back to stay again this coming year!

My husband chose this hotel after calling a few different ones in the city asking about their safety measures in place. The lady on the phone made my husband feel confident that guest safety was a top concern with their mask policy and frequency of cleanings. However, once we got to the hotel it was clear safety was not at all a top priority. Employees had their noses hanging out of masks, the concierge had her mask completely off while on a phone call and the girl checking me in kept pulling her masks off to talk to me. After checking in we waited for the elevator and was appalled that the doors opened to a crowded elevator with no one wearing masks! Walking through the hallway to get to my room was just as bad, no masks. The room itself is quite big, but I had to call to get more items since so much was missing, there wasn’t even any coffee. It took a few trips from delivery people to get everything I asked for because they kept forgetting something. We only stayed for a couple of nights, but I could not wait to check out. Staff was friendly enough, but riding in the elevators was stressful since they were so small, yet so crowded with maskless people laughing and talking. Even in the lobby, people were waiting around sofas eating, talking on the phone all without masks. Not to mention the dog running around off leash! The hotel itself is nice with big rooms, but it’s clear they don’t take this pandemic seriously. I’m back home now and self isolating for two weeks since the whole building seems to be a haven for anti-maskers. If you have any health conditions that make you at risk for covid complications, do not stay at this hotel. The cvs down the street had stricter mask enforcement than this hotel. Hopefully management here makes some changes before they become the source of a super spreader event.

Convenient location, close to major attractions, not in the nicest area (many, many homeless camped out in streets nearby) but not dangerous. We walked to a local bar down a few blocks down late at night and weren’t bothered by anyone. The hotel was very clean, as well as the room. The bar in the hotel was pricey as it’s in a fancy French restaurant and the valet was expensive with no option to self park, so make sure you include that in your budgeting.

This hotel was serviceable at best. There was no housekeeping service due to COVID-19 and the pool was closed due to renovations, but we were not informed of this when we made our reservation. The location is reasonable if you like to shop on Union Square at high end stores. It is located in the theater district which is currently dark due to the pandemic. The room was large and comfortable. There was considerable street noise through the night. The area seems to be somewhat unsafe after dark. We were not able to check in right away, so we were directed to the roof top bar. We had two espresso sized cups of tea which cost $15 plus tip. The hotel was clean. There are no laundry facilities or convenience store. To get to the main attractions of the city, you can take a Lyft which costs about $15 in each direction, or park your car in the hotel garage for $52 per night. I would consider this hotel to be just slightly better than OK. The exception was the outstanding main lobby staff. They were a warm wonderful and accommodating at all times. I would recommend this hotel to DVC members if it is the only location available in San Francisco.

The property is located very close to Union Square so it is ideal as a base to explore the city. Rooms are really spacious and have a kitchenette equipped with utensils, coffeemaker, microwave, etc. The in-room coffee was actually pretty good. Bed was very comfortable and the bathroom had good lighting and toiletries. The wifi worked great and overall we had a very pleasant stay. The main drag is that the windows are paper thin so it gets loud so if you are a light sleeper this is not the right place to stay. The hotel's restaurant has live jazz every night but it is tiny so it was hard to get a table. Also, you have to actually exit the hotel in order to enter the restaurant, which was weird. Other than that, a great stay and would probably come back (with earplugs).

Check in was good. Staff was nice. We stayed a week in July 2021. You are very near Union Square, right across from the JW Marriott.

For some reason, there is no housekeeping during your stay. I am a fan of alternate day housekeeping or housekeeping on demand, but I'm not a fan of no housekeeping for a week. We had to use a laundry bag to house our extra garbage that wouldn't fit in the two little bins. There is a cool rooftop, on which you can hang out. It's too bad there isn't a bar or something up there. We would have also have appreciated some type of public coffee / tea in a public area.

All-in-all, we were happy with our stay and would have booked again if we were to do it again.

Central location with all the needed amenities. Big room with comfy mattress & pillows.

The late night noise is a factor in poor sleep. There’s practically no sound proofing. We were on the 9th floor facing Post street and could clearly hear people rummaging through bottles, someone whistling down the street and the occasional fights.

Invest in sleeping pills.

Thanks to previously reading reviews on their marketing tactics on timeshare through ‘free breakfasts’, we politely declined when approached and went on our merry way. Although the concierge kept on reminding us of it till we finally told him we weren’t interested.

We stayed 6 nights while visiting SF. The location is good, not great. You find homeless individuals sleeping outside the hotel and human waste in the general area. A few blocks over the scene is worse.
Our room was on the 9th floor and street noise woke us every night. Not the usual street noise of a large city. Nonsensical yelling & gibberish, and random loud sounds and music.
While trying to work in room mid day I had to complain about extremely loud music from the next room (it was vibrating the furniture!), twice to no avail.
The entire floor smelled of weed every day. At least it was a decent strain.
The rooms are large with a small kitchenette which was convenient.
The building appears to need repairs and updates but the decor tries to make up for the wear & tear.
The rooftop area is a quiet space with free coffee but the terrace lacks views and was usually occupied by a loud party.
I did not check out the gym, jacuzzi or sauna but they sounded nice.
The staff was nice in an unbothered way. Probably the least friendly service staff we encountered while in the city.
Not having housekeeping everyday for basic needs like clean towels, soap and toilet paper is a 3 star hotel. Having to request toilet paper seems pedestrian to me. Color me spoiled.
We did eat dinner in one evening from the restaurant. Service was quick, professional and the food was delicious.
All in it was a place to lay our heads at night with free coffee in the morning (restaurants in the area don’t open until 8am).
Just be prepared to request daily refills and towels, to side step humans sleeping right outside the hotel and not to sleep peacefully (presumably because of said humans).
Oh, and enjoy your contact high.

Hola, quiero saber si es una zona segura, ya que dicen que es muy peligroso el centro de san francisco. Gracias
Answer from Dominique H
Easton, Connecticut23 contributions28 helpful votes
The street where the hotel is located at is safe. But if you walk 2 blocks down, it is not safe. Lots of homeless and needles on the streets. It depends which directions you go once you leave the hotel. The front desk can inform you where not to walk. Union street shopping area is a sad place to visit, lots of closed shops. And if you rent a car, please do not leave anything inside your car!! There are lots of car break ins. Don’t even think of stopping at a fast food place for a quick bite going or coming from the airport. They will break your rental car windows and steal your luggages. San Francisco has changed so much for the worst. It used to be a beautiful place to visit.
