We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience.

Neighborhood
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighborhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighborhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighborhood home.

We spent a week at the San Remo for my mums birthday this March. The hotel is beautifully decorated with period features and the staff were all really helpful and friendly. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms without a sink or bathroom, it was clean and cosy, the shared

Yes it's a budget hotel, but still one worth staying at, because so much makes up for that. And they handle the downsides of a budget hotel so well. Very cool decorating. Most of the staff was great (Jon was having a bad day I think. Mate, you have friends you can show that

Thank you very much for your review. We are delighted that you liked our character and style of the hotel. We are very proud indeed of being chosen as Fodor’s 10 best hotels in the USA. We regret to hear that one of our front desk members did not provide excellent service. We usually get compliments that we do have an excellent staff that will do anything within their power to make our guests happy. It is with feedback from our guests that we can continue to improve our service, we will address the issue. We will be delighted for you to stay here again when you return to San Francisco.

So special and unique; reminds me of our small hotels in Italy. Coffe and tea waiting every morning. Guest were all of the same like minds, quiet and respectful. The bathrooms were spacious and updated but still retained Victorian charm,

Thank you very much for your review. We are a historic hotel and work hard to maintain it faithful to the way it was built back in 1906, and to its builder A.P. Giannini, the founder of Bank of Italy, now Bank of America. This year marks the 113 anniversary of its construction. The layout and style remain the same, but we bring more modern necessities like free wi-fi and refreshments throughout the day. The set-up allows some of our visitors to get to know each other a little bit, and experience the way life was 100 years ago. We hope you will return soon.

My spouse and I stayed at the San Remo hotel for two nights. I read just about every review on Trip Advisor before booking as I did not believe that a decent hotel for a great price would be found so close to Fisherman's Warf and the trolleys. The good reviews are 100% accurate.
